Jax Fish House - Boulder Ratings and Reviews
Jax is superb. When you think about it, Jax is Oyster Central in that the oysters are all traveling about the same distance and time to Jax but from all over the US and Canada.
Our special was a over peppered but was taken care of on the bill. All previous entrees were spot on. A serious treat all round.
Cramped, crowded seating in a small brick room covered with crayon graffiti. Other diners' butts in your face whenever getting up, sitting down. Older customers required physical assistance to get out of their tight seat. Reminiscent of an airplane. Could hear diner next to me better than my date. I would be afraid to order crab here for fear of spraying neighbors when cracking shells. 15 minutes to get waters. Slow food delivery, 15-25 minutes to get apps and small plates once ordered. A bit too much head on the draft beers. Waiter explaining their Korean "butterfish" dish mentioned it was escolar. Denied or did not know it is often used as a counterfeit tuna in cheap sushi. Wikipedia entry on escolar says it all. And this is a seafood house? Two beers, two cocktails, bread, half dozen oysters, 1/2 lb shrimp, one crabcake, calamari = $110. It is higher-quality seafood in Colorado, though. Just wish it wasn't like an overpriced city bus with slow service.
I would absolutely recommend Jax Fish House to anyone! I love this place. The service and food are both fabulous! On our last visit, our waiter gave my husband his cocktail on the house because it was his birthday - so wonderful! The only complaint I've ever had was the last time we were there. My son ordered the kids' fish and chips meal. It came with 2 very small pieces of fish. I mentioned this to my waiter and he kindly brought out a bit more fish for my son. Truly great service! Our family uses any excuse to head over to Jax. :)
The food and the service were excellent and the pricing was reasonable however it would seem that the kitchen might be under staffed as it took almost forever and a day to finally get food. Mostly that's not an issue for us bet we had actually made a fairly early reservation in order to be certain to make it to our concert in plenty of time and as it turned out we barely made it by the skin of our teeth.
We had been to the Jax Fish house in Denver. Which was very good. So we were thinking that the Jax in Boulder would have come close. Boy were we wrong. The drinks were very weak and very very small, my husbands and daughters fish dishes were overcooked. My son-in-law and I had the lobster sandwich. It was ok but not great. Overall we left very disappointed. For a pricey place I really would expect everything you order is perfect. I know we will not go back.
As coastal residents, we were a bit suspicious of a seafood restaurant in the mountains. (Sorry Jax, we're late to the party.) But....the great reviews and "being away from home all summer cravings" overrode the misgivings. Good decision! Every bite of every dish was scrumptious. We chose NS raw oysters from about 15 varieties offered, seared halibut with a tasty succotash of heirloom squash and corn, spicy braised collards and warm sourdough bread with honey butter. Perfection! And the service was topnotch - on a Friday evening with every table and bar seat full. There's a reason the line is out the door. It's so good.
Although it's pretty loud, Jax was a great experience. We had a fantastic meal and service. I had the scallops special, which included wasabi mashed potatoes and some scallops served tempura style. It was magnificent. We also had great house cocktails, and reasonable drink prices.
Excellent chowder! Over-priced oysters that were too rinsed. Bread should not be charged--especially a mediocre serving of such. Very loud establishment, but they do cram in too many tables and everyone is far too close to their neighbor for comfort. Nice decor. Fresh snow crab and it was delicious. The wine list is good but prices jacked up waaay to much. We will give this place more opportunities to shine, but will sit at the bar for some breathing room.
I had one of the most delicious meals i have had in a very long time on my recent visit to Jax. It was a halibut entree served with sweet corn and squash. The flavors on the plate were amazing! And it was such a great summer dish using the vegetables that are currently in season in the area. Well done Jax!
The best thing about Jax was the food -- the crab cake I had was excellent and the halibut I ordered was cooked perfectly. However, the service was fair at best. I made a reservation but still had to wait an additional 15 minutes to be seated. The server was not especially attentive and forgot to bring us one of our appetizers until we had nearly finished our main course. The decor in the restaurant is nice but I did not like that it was very noisy and all of the tables were placed very close together, making it feel crowded. And although the food was tasty, it was not a good value -- our meal for 2 ended up totaling about $140. My compliments to the chef, but I don't think I will be back, except maybe for a special occasion.
Friendly and prompt service as always. Happy hour oysters were amazing! Calamari appetizer is best in town. But all our potatoes and fries were undercooked. Better crispy with seafood we think. And having to pay for bread is a negative, especially when it was also undercooked and lacked flavor. Didn't taste like homemade sourdough, more like a pilsbury loaf. Sorry! But if you make us pay, then make it good!
We haven't been to Jax in Boulder in a few years, but always love coming here. Decided it was a great place to go for our 36th Anniversary.
Have recommended this Jax plus the on in Ft. Collins over the years.
Everyone who works at Jax, is very nice and helpful.
