Food was excellent. Service was a little slow but staff are very friendly.
Had dinner here in April 2018 with some friends. I grew up in Austin, Texas so my standards for Tex-Mex are pretty high. Generally what most places outside of the Southwest call Tex-Mex is bad. Javelina is real Tex-Mex. More than that, it's real GOOD Tex-Mex. The Queso (traditional and queso-blanco) was phenominal, and I was in love with the Bob Armstrong dip (something I didn't think I would ever get outside of Texas). The brisket tacos were tender and flavorful. The mexican margarita was great too.
It's a small restaurant and very popular, so don't expect quiet cozy ambience. There's great energy though, and we never felt cramped. The service was very good as well, with food coming quickly and accurately. We did feel a little rushed to leave after finishing dinner, but I understood, since the restaurant was small and popular, they wanted to make room for the next set of diners.
I would not hesitate to come back again.
We love Javelina! The queso is to die for. I only wish they had more space or a room for bigger parties. We always wanna come here when people visit with a large group but unfortunately it’s just not built to accommodate. But doesn’t keep us away! Highly recommend it!
Great upbeat atmosphere! The staff was very friendly and we were immediately seated and served chips and salsa, which was delicious. Definitely recommend the frozen margaritas! We ordered chicken tacos and the fish tacos. The fish tacos weren’t that great- the fish that day was shark, which I wish I had known before ordering because the texture was very tough and more like chicken. Wasn’t a big fan, but I’m sure they will be better with a different type of fish. The chicken tacos were very good though!
Overall, it is a great little spot and would try again.
I've been here twice. The food is always good; drinks. too.
But the guy at the front check in desk was horrible and rude.
I had a reservation, and he wouldn't let me sit until my
friend arrived - although all the tables were empty. I
asked him nicely, and he was abrupt and nasty. I will
never return to Javelina, nor recommend it to anyone.
had to wait long for our reservation, but the host gave us a free round so no real complaints. food was good, service a little slow but not annoyingly slow.
Javelina is an adorable restaurant and while our margaritas, chips, and guac were yummy, our Mexican Caesar salads were not (they were way overdressed). Maybe we just picked the wrong main on the menu, but I've had much better food--for a much more reasonable price--at other Mexican restaurants in the city. I probably won't choose Javelina over other Mexican options moving forward.
Javelinas is a fun place for Margaritas and daiquiris. It also serves fresh and delicious Mexican food. Their chips are fried up just before they are served...great quality, crispy and hot! We tried the tacos and tamales, both yummy. The enchilada dinner was very good too. But that's where it ends...no dessert or coffee. Great place for happy hour from 3-6. Close to Union Square. Friendly servers. Big on fun and fresh, flavorful food! Go strawberry daiquiris!!!!
Wonderful queso! You’ve done Matt proud with the Bob Armstrong. :)
Love it! The food is amazing and we love Jillian she's amazing!
A NY staple. Frozen Margs are legit!
Terrible terrible service. Food was decent, but didn't get drinks until after our food arrived
Yummy brisket queso and jalapeno margs!
This is fun place - the only problem is service is VERY slow. We had a 7:30 dinner reservation and were there until after 10 - when we would have been very happy leaving at 9 or 9:30.
The queso is amazing!! Must get when you come. Service is great too!
I love Javelina! It’s probably my favorite restaurant in the city. The queso is awesome, the margaritas are delicious, and the fajitas are consistently good. I would be lying if I didn’t admit that Uber has it saved a frequent location in my home screen!
Wife is not a fan of cilantro but convinced her to get some tex-mex. She had the vegetable fajitas
which didn't have any cilantro and was grilled to perfection. I shared the Paradillas with our son which was also fajitas but with Chorizo, Steak, Carnitas and Chicken. Delicious and huge. It came with rice and beans, Guacamole, sour cream and pico de gallo. We only ate about half and took the rest home. We will be back.
Aside from having to wait 15 min for our table to be ready (and we had a reservation) we had a great time at Javelina. The avocado cilantro margs were worth the wait and our meals came out quickly and were very good. This is a great place for a casual meet up with some great drink options (and the white queso and guac aren't bad either!)
We love this place
Great food, awesome service and delicous drinks... highly recommend!
Queso is amazing! Staff is super friendly and accomodating.
Relaxed friendly with good food
If you love REAL Tex Mex then this is a must! Felt like I was back in dallas!!!
The wait time with a reservation was so long
Having just moved here from Arizona we have been looking for Mexican food. Much more casuals than displayed the food was good. Not outstanding just good. Would recommend but not go out of my way to return. When we arrived we were the only table there and asked to sit against the wall since we were entraining a business customer. I was told that was reserved for a group of 6 but after about 30 minutes they seated a couple and a baby there. It was noisy and hard to hear conversation.
Great for families.
Amazing queso! Get the queso sampler - you won't regret it
Our waitress was not all there. She forgot everything. She forgot to put in our order for apps. When we asked her she said we didn't order an app, until we reminded her about the whole conversation we had around the types of queso. Queso arrived after the rest of the order. She was supposed to ask a question to the kitchen. First she said she forgot to ask. Then a moment later said she did ask, but forgot she had asked.
Javelina is one of my go-to’s and I was a bit disappointed this time around. We ordered white queso which came cold and watery. The waitress microwaved for us. Temperature was better but was still too watery. She offered to switch out for a yellow queso, which also came ice cold but we were too embarrassed to send back again. They removed from the bill which was nice. But overall just not happy with this visit and sad since it is one of my favorites.
When we arrived for our reservation on time they were less than 20% occupied with plenty of empty tables. We were seated in the center aisle. i asked to move to a table next to the wall. I was told all the other tables were reserved! Were they all specifically assigned? I hate when i am told this ! Eventually they "allowed" us to move. Had they not i would have left. The drinks were good . Everything else average, ordered soup it was cold. Service staff was very nice.
Amazing food. Fun atmosphere. Highly recommend it!
One of my new favorite restaurants in the city! The food took Tex-Mex basics and heightened them with rich flavors and nuanced touches that made the food cry “ay ay ay!” in your mouth. So delicious! The queso is a must; we ordered ours with brisket on top. YUM. Huge applause for the chicken enchiladas and the frozen peach habanero margarita. Service was genuine, attentive and cool. Great impression from start to finish.
Great Gramercy location, delicious food and drinks, but the restaurant is very loud so a little hard to talk to anyone other than the person next to you
I live in Dallas, Texas and I don't usually risk eating Tex-Mex east of the Mississippi River. But Javelina served an amazing meal from the chips and salsa to the queso and taquitos and the stacked brisket enchiladas with a poblano cream sauce and a fried egg. It was all simply superb.
All good but the place can be made warmer. These are very cold days and the temperature was not high enough
A must-visit for Tex-Mex in Union Square -- great food and service.
We had an early New Year's Eve dinner at Javelina. Cocktails were fine, service was really attentive, food was tasty, portions were average. We enjoy eating here because it has the feel of a local, neighborhood place. One thing that surprised us was no availability of hot coffee or tea after our meal, also no desert menu...seemed a bit odd...but we did enjoy everything else.
Casual dinner to catch up with friends. Really yummy, pretty good size portions, seafood was great. Didn’t have drinks.
Really poor service. Was excited to go out to dinner here as I’ve walked by many times. I had a reservation and was not seated for about 15min after my reservation.
Upon trying to order drinks at the bar we could not order a pitcher and then were not able to transfer our bill to the table. We also had to wait in the cold/crowded doorway.
Once seated the food was delicious. They just need to figure out the service.
Our food and half full drinks were taken abruptly from the table so dinner was cut very short. It was clear they wanted us to hurry up. However, once we gave the waiter our cards it took over 30min to actually get our cards back and leave.
The food and drinks were really great however the service was almost bad enough not to go back.
