A friend and I came here for sunday breakfast before his flight left. It was located inside the hotel. If we had been guests of the hotel it would have been very convenient and a decent option but the food wasn't amazing. it was good, but there are other places in the area I would have tried if I had known it was primarily just a hotel restaurant. The service was great and everyone was very friendly, though!
We arrived on the early side for a weekend dinner (5:30) because we were attending a concert at the Kennedy Center afterwards (8 pm). There was no one at the entrance at first, so we had to wait a few minutes to get seated. At times throughout the night we had trouble flagging down a waiter, especially to pay for the bill and make it to our event. It was a nice setting, very quiet. It would have been walking distance to the Kennedy Center, but it was raining so we took the bus from the Foggy Bottom metro.
The food was good. One of us got the pre-theater prix fix menu (appetizer + entree + dessert), and the other got a single entree. This was the perfect amount of food for the two of us. The crab cake (appetizer), scallops (main), and sea bass (main) were all delicious. The seafood was cooked very well - crisp on the outside and soft in the middle. However, by the end of the meal, everything seemed a little bit salty. The chocolate lava cake (dessert) was good.
We were celebrating an anniversary and marked that in the Open Table reservation, so they gave us each a complimentary glass of champagne.
Great cosmopolitan feeling walking in but totally void of personnel.
No one to meet/greet. No one to address our table for at least 10 min and we were a party of 8 in the first EMPTY room.
The waiter then came with water - nothing else. This service continued throughout and we all felt that waiter was either high or brain dead.
Kind of hard to address the good food when we had to constantly ask for service.
Go for drinks but plan on spending a lot of time waiting for one
The food was superb, the service- fantastic, the ability to hold a conversation without shouting -appreciated. Lived in the area for years but never heard of this restaurant and based on the quality of the food this is one of Washington's best kept secrets.
Nothing wrong with the food and service - both good. Duck Confit appetizer was yummy. However, good luck if you plan to use their valet parking. The web-site for the Melrose Hotel stated parking was $5, but they insisted on charging $15. The valet sent me to the front desk and the front desk sent me to the valet. Even though I showed the ONE SENTENCE on their site that said how much the parking was, both the front desk and valet just stared at it as if it was highly technical or in another language. Very frustrating. As a result, I was stressed going to the theater and made it to my seats at the Kennedy Center maybe 2 minutes before the performance. If you go, allow an extra 20 minutes to haggle over the cost if you use their parking...
Took advantage of Restaurant week - I had the filet and my wife the scallops. Both delicious and perfectly prepared. The crab cake appetizer was delicious and almost a meal unto itself.
We shared a carmel creme brulee and a chocolate lava cake. I know chocolate lovers will love the lava cake - it was more than I could handle - but my wife indicated it was very good.
The appetizers and main course were excellent. The ingredients were fresh, and the combinations kind of "danced" on my tongue. Definitely visit again. Highly recommend and a GREAT value for restaurant week.
The restaurant wasn't too busy, but I did notice the service was a bit inconsistent. Initially, it was great, but our waiter became distracted with new arrivals and it did take about 15 minutes to get the attention of our waiter for our bill. Not a big deal. It's a comfortable 15 minute walk to the Kennedy Center - the perfect distance to make you feel like you earned the meal, I would absolutely consider it as a "goto" spot before a show.
Based on the conversations at nearby tables - we were not the only theatre goers in attendance.
The Restaurant Week menu (3 courses for $35) was excellent value for a delicious and satisfying meal. The crabcake was exemplary with large flakes of perfectly seasoned crab and fresh local salad leaves. The filet mignon arrived in two thick chunks -- I could only manage to eat one of them -- and was tender and cooked exactly as ordered. The accompanying truffle dauphinoise was exquisite. Creme brulee was something of a let down, with a very thin caramel crust and the custard slightly grainy as if scalded. Brewed coffee was very strong and smooth, and I recommend it very highly. The ambience was discreet and low key, and Derek's service was solicitous and friendly.
Love this place for a pre-theater evening. The food is delicious. The beef and fish dishes we chose were both perfectly cooked. The service is attentive - esp. if you alert the staff to the need to make it to the theater at a certain time. We went during restaurant week - an added plus for cost. Even during reg. times, the restaurant prices are totally appropriate for the location and food quality.
My wife and I had dinner here before a Kennedy Center show. We were quite pleasantly surprised. We order the pre-theater price-fixed dinner and thought the food was great and very reasonably priced. The place was empty (it was a Sunday night) and therefore very quiet. Our waiter, whose name unfortunately I cannot recall, was great. Overall, it was very enjoyable and I would highly recommend it, especially for a pre-theater dinner.
I had a wonderful, quiet meal at Jardenea to celebrate my birthday. We had wonderful service from Nelson, who didn't mind that my boyfriend and I ordered enough food to need two tables pushed together—don't judge! We couldn't agree on a dessert but settled on the lava cake. Nelson surprised us with a mini birthday version of the dessert I had wanted, alongside the dessert we ordered. The ambiance was very peaceful.
The Brussels sprouts were the best part of the meal, hands down. (We ordered one plate of them and immediately ordered another.) We were both very pleased with what we ordered. I hope you enjoy it too.
FIVE STARS, PERIOD! The food was exceptionally fresh, from farm to table at every bite. First, the service: perfect! Our server, Derrick, was just a refreshing personality, supremely pleasant and unobtrusive. He is a fan of the restaurant and its food. He was our personal server too. I cannot say enough about his attitude, demeanor, attention to detail. We did not expect this kind of treatment, but he showed us the kind of care and concern a place with twice the prices would wish to offer.
Food. Spectacular! We started with the Spinach salad, which was garnished and seasoned to perfection. Our next course was the crab cake. By far, the most amazing crab cake I've had in this region, fresher than the water it was plucked from and sitting atop a mound of veggies and corn, with seasonings that made me wish I had found it sooner. The main course of braised short ribs was so tender and moist, I couldn't find anyone's mama to slap. With all of this excellence, we just slowly ate and relished every single bite. Derrick was the perfect host, ensuring we knew the history of every bite yet staying out of the way as needed. We were not eating bread and he brought us nuts instead to munch on while we waited. The dessert was amazing chocolate lava cake. We are foodies and will not waste calories on bad meals. By far, we believe Jardenea is a HIDDEN GEM in the area and needs to be a known gem immediately. We sang its praises from the first bite and left on cloud 9, knowing our penny and mouths were treated with ultimate respect.
Go here for a date, for an evening at the Kennedy Center or just drop in and get a great meal at a decent price (I would have paid more had they charged it). I'll be back and I hope to see you there!
Restaurant was basically empty. Just 3 other customers besides my husband and I. Very low lighting. We went for a pre theatre dinner. They have a prix fix menu for this. There are 3 appetizers you can chose from. I was told the one I chose, Duck Confit, would take at least 30 minutes to prepare. I told our server that would be fine, he could just bring it out anytime during dinner. A few minutes later the server told me it would take longer than 30 minutes. Obviously, they did not have Duck Confit that night! I ordered the beef tenderloin, medium well. It came out very well done and dry. I ate less than 1/4 of it. The dessert, creme brulee was just OK. We were charged $7.00 for a bottle of sparkling water which is outrageous. I buy the exact same brand for less than $3.00 a bottle.
We will never return nor will I recommend to anyone. Very disappointing.
My wife and I went to Jardenea for dinner before a NSO concert at the Kennedy Center. We both had the 3 course pre-fix dinner which was delicious and a good deal. The environment was quiet and relaxing. The wait staff was attentive and made sure we left on time to walk to the Kennedy Center (10 minute walk).
We ate here on New Years Eve before a show at the Kennedy Center. It was very close to the theater and worked out well for timing. We informed the staff about our show tickets upon arrival and they did everything to accommodate our departure time so we would not be late to the show.
The Food was amazing! Everything was cooked to perfection, locally sourced and you could see the attention to detail put into each dish. The Fois Gras and Duck Confit Tartlet were perfect starters. For our main course, I ordered the Strip Steak and it was cooked to a perfect medium rare with a savory crust and tender, moist center! My wife ordered the Sea Bass and it couldn't have been prepared better. The prices are astonishingly low considering the caliber of food at Jardenea. I recently spent about double for a similar meal at another D.C. restaurant and the food at Jardenea was bar far prepared to a higher standard!
I will definitely eat here again and I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an exquisite meal.
Service was pretty bad. Our server was not attentive at all. He completely forgot a couple of requests and other servers stepped in for him for other basic duties. He just disappeared several times. We watched another server that was definitely attentive to his table. He described dishes and offered specials. Ours did not. The other server even had to pick up our check to process payment
The food was okay. Appetizer was better than the main course. The intermezzo was super sweet orange sherbet-like that did nothing to cleanse or refresh the palate. The main course was duck that was rubbery in a chewy/soggy dough. Not worth the price. The experience was disappointing.
The pre theater menu was amazing - the crab cake was artful, large portion and fantastic. The steak was a perfect medium rare and high quality piece of meat. The chefs menu was an impressive deal that did not compromise on quality. (Available 5pm-7pm — appetizer, entree, dessert ...$44). Highly recommend.
We were looking for a good pre-theater dining option before our show at the Kennedy Center. The food at Jardenea was fantastic, particularly the smoked duck, but everything tasted great. The service was impeccable. Our waiter could answer any questions (one in our group is lactose intolerant) and made sure the cook knew we had to make an 8:00 pm show. It was a Sunday night and therefore probably slow so the restaurant was quiet, but perfect for dinner conversation. Entrees were pricey, but thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Restaurant is a short walk to the KC shuttle stop.
