Japengo - Maui Ratings and Reviews
Food and atmosphere was wonderful. Server was very helpful in explaining the menu. There was something for everyone. Sushi for me. Chicken for the non-fish eater. Interestingly prepared seafood. Service was only slow at the end -- dessert and check. Hawaii time I guess. I still highly recommend this restaurant.
Beautiful view, excellent service, interesting menu choices. Everything was delicious, and we were very full. I’d mentioned when reserving that it was for a birthday, and the staff was very sweet about making sure the birthday guest was recognized. Gorgeous view overlooking the ocean. Will definitely recommend to friends visiting Maui.
To us, Japengo has it all! Fabulous Asian fusion food ( the Korean pancakes are to die for), thoughtful smaller portion options so diners can share plates, an incredible view of the ocean and sunsets, and gracious...servers...we really enjoyed Michele’s courteous, helpful and wonderfully efficient service...clearly an asset to Japengo and the Hyatt. We will Always go there for special occasoins, friends get togethers and romantic evenings. The best...all around.
Excellent all round. Our waiter Dave was excellent. Attentive but not in a rush you kind of way. Had two excellent sushi rolls. We where not sure which wine to choose and Dave brought us a taste of both so we could make the right choice. Not inexpensive but worth every penny.
We started with the curried calamari and duck meatballs. We loved them and the ability to choose two half portions vs one large portion was brilliant! Amazing sushi according to my husband who eats fresh sushi/sashimi routinely. The uni was superb and the chef’s creation roll of the night were beautifully plated and tasty to match. I ordered from the menu of cooked entrees. Portions were extremely large. I had the pork belly with bacon risotto. I’m a huge fan of pork belly but was disappointed by this entree. The meat was dry and required a lot of chewing and entirely flavorless. They poured a sauce all over the top making the crisped fat soggy and flavorless (unless you only wanted the sauce)- an absolute disappointment!! The risotto portion was huge but likened a cooked gelatinous “glump” on the plate. The bacon was all you could taste and the smokiness overpowered the entire plate. Half way through the entree I just needed to remove my plate from under my nose as the pervasive odor had won and I put my fork down. The setting was beautiful but busy and loud. Service was slightly above average but not commensurate with a high end restaurant of similar pricing on the West Coat of USA. We would go back because my husband loves sushi/sashimi but I think I would just order half-sized appetizers for my meal. Beer selection included several Asian beers, a few local and several bottles varieties. Wine list was okay but not huge or amazing. Prices of bottles appeared to be 2-3x retail price in stores
Every time we are there the first thing you see is Jimmy’s smiling face always happy to help and asking how you are. Food is always perfect our servers name was Tara she was knowledgeable and friendly. The restaurant was very busy but the food seemed to come right out, it is always a great place to eat !
Booked Japengo for my fiancé’s 29th birthday, we asked for a table with a view.... they put us in a back room with absolutely no view.
Food was too expensive for what it was, not bad but not worth as much as it is priced at. With the prices on the menu I assumed it was pretty upscale, it’s kind of more casual. Drinks were good and the view is great if you get a table with a view.
We have visited Japengo in the past and were happy to return. It didn't disappoint. The service was very good, the Aloha attitude was prevalent and the view was...well, it's Ka'anapala Beach in Maui. The menu has expanded from our last visit and marks items that include locally sourced ingredients...a welcome addition. We had a wide variety of sushi and sashimi (and, for the 5-year old, a pepperoni pizza). Everything was beautifully prepared and plated. Lovely balance of ingredients.
My only disappointment is that they no longer offer freshly grated wasabe. It was marvelous, but apparently the demand was low.
We will happily return to Japengo whenever we spend time in Maui. It's simply lovely.
The sushmi was EXCELLENT! The raw fish is very fresh. Miso soup is very good but was lukewarm. Our fried rice was room temperature and the ribs they have on the appetizer menu were just so-so. They were also room temperature. To sum it up the raw fish is excellent and very fresh everything else was very mediocre and room temperature. I wouldn’t go back for any of the sides . I would just order the Sushi and sit outside and listen to their live music. The food was not made to order is my guess this is why it was cold and really not very good.
Food is excellent. Both hot and sushi type foods were well prepared, great presentation, fresh and tasty. Restaurant is located inside the Hyatt, unlike most other hotel restaurants, the food is extraordinary good. It is a bit pricey but I do feel the value and quality is very balanced. Very nice ambience and not pretentious. Service was good and efficient, in particular, it was a busy night.
I think this is my favorite restaurant in Maui and that’s saying something because I also have several others that I absolutely love
I think Japengo wins because of that amazing view sitting outside plus extraordinary sushi and great care taken with every other dish
we also loved the ribs ,we loved the fish dishes of which there are several to choose from ,and the salads were fresh and imaginative . The chocolate desert was perfect.
Everything was beautifully done and even though it was Christmas we never felt hurried to give up our table or in any way feel like this day if dining was compromised by the intensity of demand. Really there’s nothing I can say But superlatives . We werereally thankful to get a wonderful table at 5:30 looking out at the water and magnificent view and the lovely lighting helped us feel cozy and romantic
we come to Maui every year and we always come here
thank you so much for taking care of us

A favorite on West Maui because of the spectacular ocean view, amazing fusoin food ( and some dishes available in Smaller sizes! Much appreciated), and always gracious and helpful servers ( thank you again, Carrie...you were wonderful!) we love entertaining visitors at this restaurant at the Hyatt. And we think of it as a romantic spot for special occasions.
Beautiful location. Waitress was fantastic but hostesses were sassy and rude. We almost left because of their attitude even with a reservation but figured we were already there so why waste the reservation. Food was good. Cashew chicken was bland but vegetables, salad and sushi were great.
Food was mediocre and pricey. We had items from the sushi list and things that were cooked. Sushi was a little disappointing with limited selection - no Toro or Uni. Freshness was mediocre but the hamachi was pretty good. Other dishes seemed to try too hard with over powering sauces. The molten lava cake was very good.
The ambiance was very nice with views of the ocean and an outdoor theme with torches, large lounge chairs, and live music.
Overall, this restaurant got 2 Stars. Food should be a restaurants 1st priority and you can tell that this took a back seat to creating a nice ambiance. I don’t mind paying a lot for a good meal. In this case, I did not think this was worth it.
