Japengo - Maui Ratings and Reviews
When we visit Maui we always go to Japengo! Their sushi is excellent - fresh & beautifully presented - always delicious! We tried their ribs as an appetizer & found them a little disappointing. The cocktails were. perfect as was the ambiance - we sat in a covered area but open to the outdoors. Great service! We will return for sure!
Went here years ago and had a great time. Returned this time and now I am gluten free. They had a menu to accommodate which was wonderful but everything we ordered of it was exceptionally bland tasting and quite boring. Waiter was nice but was overworked and was not able to attend to our needs. Refills were never offered in the 1.5 hours we were there and glasses were all empty. Really expensive for such disappointing experience.
Excellent food, service and atmosphere! ***Had a drink in bar area (premium liquor on rocks $14) and was charged $20 for same drink while dining! Manager came over and said they probably under charged us at bar. Went to a similar fine dining establishment in area and asked the bartender about this practice and he was amazed and said they would never do that!
We chose to dine at Japengo at sunset, and even though it was somewhat overcast, the view and the ambiance was wonderful. At the servers recommendation, we tried several different dishes. Japengo offers half orders of some dishes, plus we shared the entree. We loved the scallops, which were a special on the evening we were there. We also thought the Lahaina Roll was excellent. We were less excited about the fried rice we ordered, but it was still good. I don't know if the server had too many tables or whether he just forgot us from time to time, but the service could have been better. The server was very knowledgeable about the various dishes, however, and gave us good recommendations.
Ate mainly sushi. Couple appetizers as well. The lobster dynamite was good but seemed overpriced. The sushi was good but nothing special. The waitress wasn’t particularly attentive. As the evening closed advised us to kitchen was closing so if we want to desert we had to order now. Thought that was rather rude considering it’s not a cheap restaurant. This restaurant is at the Hyatt hotel. Service here at The other restaurants has been rather poor so not surprised
In my travels, the general rule for eating sushi is that the best sushi places only serve sushi. That remains true. The second tier places serve sushi and other Japanese non-sushi dishes. The third tier, which in my experience, serves sushi and other Asian dishes from Korea, China, or Thailand, are hardly ever worth going to for sushi. Maybe it should be a guideline and not a rule because the Japengo menu selection makes it third tier sushi place, but it breaks the rules. The sushi was great (not top tier but very good sushi). We challenged the chef with the standards like hamachi, maguro and sake, and top tier choices like uni, ama ebi, anago, and hotate. Every piece was generous in portion, fresh and flavorful, and the rice was just fine. Combine that with top notch service (thank you Sheri) and an unbeatable view, and this is pretty good sushi on Maui—Sushi Paradise is still the best.
Everything about the food and service was fantastic! The trade winds made it a bit chilly, and the table next to us was very loud, rude and bothersome, disappointing what would have been a lovely evening. But the restaurant couldn’t have helped these factors...just luck of the draw.
My husband and I have been coming to Maui multiple times per year for the past decade andJapengo is a place we always choose to dine at while on the island. We love the local ingredients and outstanding food quality, romantic atmosphere, impeccable service and love that it's right on the water. I was particularly please this past visit as my husband passed away over the summer and I let Japengo know through Open Table. Upon knowing, they seated us at the perfect table fit for honoring and memorializing his life. Thank you!
Our waitress was wonderful! She helped guide us on the menu and was very attentive to make sure we were pleased with everything and that our drinks never were empty. We had the fried rice, cashew chicken, california roll and edamame. All were pretty good. Not the best I've ever had, but everything was a large portion and prepared well. Some of their items they do 1/2 portions of for 1/2 the price, which is great.
Thanks to your wonderful waitress! :)
Food was excellent. Atmosphere was great. Bobby was a very friendly, efficient server. The restaurant has certain items for which you can get a half order at half price so you can try different things. I had the fried rice( some of the best I've ever had) and the China Town Chow Fun ( pork, scallops, crab, prawns, oyster sauce, and mushroom shoyu). It was wonderful. The Kung Pao suck meatball appetizer was great too.
Food and atmosphere was wonderful. Server was very helpful in explaining the menu. There was something for everyone. Sushi for me. Chicken for the non-fish eater. Interestingly prepared seafood. Service was only slow at the end -- dessert and check. Hawaii time I guess. I still highly recommend this restaurant.
Our traditional first day on Maui dinner. We always sit at the sushi bar and enjoy the entertainment, skill and conversations with Norman and his sushi crew. We often put ourselves in the hands of Norman requesting that he surprise us with one of his creations. Service is great, cocktails are well crafted. A very good selection of sake is available. If you like sushi this place is a must.
Beautiful view, excellent service, interesting menu choices. Everything was delicious, and we were very full. I’d mentioned when reserving that it was for a birthday, and the staff was very sweet about making sure the birthday guest was recognized. Gorgeous view overlooking the ocean. Will definitely recommend to friends visiting Maui.
To us, Japengo has it all! Fabulous Asian fusion food ( the Korean pancakes are to die for), thoughtful smaller portion options so diners can share plates, an incredible view of the ocean and sunsets, and gracious...servers...we really enjoyed Michele’s courteous, helpful and wonderfully efficient service...clearly an asset to Japengo and the Hyatt. We will Always go there for special occasoins, friends get togethers and romantic evenings. The best...all around.
Excellent all round. Our waiter Dave was excellent. Attentive but not in a rush you kind of way. Had two excellent sushi rolls. We where not sure which wine to choose and Dave brought us a taste of both so we could make the right choice. Not inexpensive but worth every penny.
We started with the curried calamari and duck meatballs. We loved them and the ability to choose two half portions vs one large portion was brilliant! Amazing sushi according to my husband who eats fresh sushi/sashimi routinely. The uni was superb and the chef’s creation roll of the night were beautifully plated and tasty to match. I ordered from the menu of cooked entrees. Portions were extremely large. I had the pork belly with bacon risotto. I’m a huge fan of pork belly but was disappointed by this entree. The meat was dry and required a lot of chewing and entirely flavorless. They poured a sauce all over the top making the crisped fat soggy and flavorless (unless you only wanted the sauce)- an absolute disappointment!! The risotto portion was huge but likened a cooked gelatinous “glump” on the plate. The bacon was all you could taste and the smokiness overpowered the entire plate. Half way through the entree I just needed to remove my plate from under my nose as the pervasive odor had won and I put my fork down. The setting was beautiful but busy and loud. Service was slightly above average but not commensurate with a high end restaurant of similar pricing on the West Coat of USA. We would go back because my husband loves sushi/sashimi but I think I would just order half-sized appetizers for my meal. Beer selection included several Asian beers, a few local and several bottles varieties. Wine list was okay but not huge or amazing. Prices of bottles appeared to be 2-3x retail price in stores
Every time we are there the first thing you see is Jimmy’s smiling face always happy to help and asking how you are. Food is always perfect our servers name was Tara she was knowledgeable and friendly. The restaurant was very busy but the food seemed to come right out, it is always a great place to eat !
