Met expectations
We have been to Jane G’s many times. The food and service is usually very good, this time however while the food was great the service was not that great , the server was not very knowledgeable and could not answer any of our questions or the order was not placed the way we wanted it .
Food is very good. Love the dumplings and the lo mein. They have vegetable “sides” that are huge and the same price as their main dishes with proteins. I’d love the option for a smaller side so that you can purchase along side of a main dish!
The hot pot is an absolute must-try-at-least-once.
My girlfriend (after Jane G's, now-fiancee) and I go to Jane G's quite often for the authentic Szechuan cuisine. If you are unfamiliar with this style of Chinese food, think bold flavors and an addictive spiciness. We are incredibly lucky to be living so close to this gem of a restaurant. Key dishes include mapo tofu (soft tofu stewed in a numbingly spicy and garlicky sauce), kung pao chicken, dan dan noodles (noodles with beef in a spicy peanut sauce), and especially the wood ear mushroom salad (dark mushrooms with a fun bite to them in chili oil with bamboo shoots). As for service, it is occasionally great but never bad.
The real treat here, however, is the authentic hot pot. At a price of $35/person, it may sound like a lot at first, but it is 120% worth the experience plus that's no more than Restaurant Week's standard price, not to mention this is all you can eat. As our amazing waiter told us, this is not something to be rushed (our dinner lasted 2+ hours; he told us some go to 4!). After selecting a type of stock (spicy, chicken/shrimp-based, vegetarian, or two partitioned), you select which raw ingredients you would like to try. Options include the premium, thinly-sliced beef (unimaginably good), chicken, pork, flounder, fish balls, lobster balls, slices of duck blood, various tofus, enoki and other mushrooms, Chinese cabbage, spinach, pork kidneys and intestines, dumplings, noodles, and more! The pot of stock is brought out on a gas burner and the ingredients on one, very large plate (along with a trio of sauces). Basically a Szechuan fondue, you then proceed to cook your own food in the incredibly flavorful stocks (max cook time: 3 min. for most). We easily kept eating for another half hour after we had already declared, "I'm full." Now, we can't wait to try it again with more people.
A huge thank you to Jane G and all your staff for helping make my girlfriend's birthday the best one ever!
WE had the scallion pancakes which were delicious. We also had wonton soup and hot and sour soups. They were also very good. Sesame chicken and pad thai were yummy. Very big portions and a beautiful restaurant.
Another great meal at Jane G’s. Love the dumpling sampler which my husband and I shared. I had the spicy perfume entree. A lot of food that is delicious and spicy. Prepare yourself, but totally worth it. Look forward to eating the leftovers.
We had the HOTPOT which is a fun experience and a good value at $35 per person for all you wish to eat.
Food was pretty good. Service was awful. Our first server had a little difficulty due to the cultural difference which wasn't an issue at all. The second server we had rushed us through our food and I don't think we got everything that was supposed to come with our order. Additionally, our food came out at random times. We ordered from the restaurant week menu. My appetizer came out about 15 minutes before my friend's appetizer. Then, our side dishes came out separately and then we got everything else at the same time. I would have given the place four stars (solely on the food) if our food came out together and maybe five if she hadn't rushed us through our meal. We were still eating and we hadn't even got the dessert that was a part of restaurant week when she was trying to bring us our check. Service could be much better. Really the service is the only reason I wouldn't recommend to a friend. No one wants to be rushed to eat especially when they are paying over $100 for a tab.
Party of 4 had a few small plates (wood ears and dumplings with chili oil), a spicy beef dish with rice, and sauteed pea sprouts. All were done well and hit the spot.
Absolutely fantastic experience! The food is authentic and outstanding. Will definitely be coming back!
We always have a great meal. The waiters are very good and friendly.
Our first time at Jane G's -- but found the food wonderful, authentic, copious, delicious. The servers were really attentive and charming.
This used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant. I would drive two hours from Brooklyn to have dinner here. No more. What happened?
Delicious, authentic Sichuan food. We did a pre-fix menu forBew Years Eve. 4 course with 4 cocktails. Everything was outstanding and even our picky kids enjoyed their food as well. Worth the visit.
Delicious entrees prepared to your desired spiciness level, and presented creatively. Service was unusually slow, even though the restaurant wasn’t full yet when we arrived. But we’ll be back to celebrate the anniversary of our first date on Christmas every year, and hopefully in between!
Good food!
Try their HOT POT it’s terrific and fun
Been several times and the food is always fresh and wonderful. The service is great! Close to the Rittenhouse should you be staying there and want a fantastic Chinese restaurant within walking distance.
Went with my boyfriend and had a really great time. This is one of my favorite restaurants in all of Philadelphia and will go into Philly just to come here. The food is always great, and the drink menu is awesome. I recommend this restaurant to everyone I know & I definitely say go here if you're in philly!!!
The food was sub par. The presentation and flavor just wasn't there. The chairs look like they came from a closed down club- they definitely are an eye sore. The restroom was disgusting - makes me question the cleanliness of the kitchen.
The staff was attentive and the service was excellent. It just looks like they are good servers stuck working at an establishment where the owner is pinching pennies in the wrong places.
You need to spend money to make more money.
Definitely, will not be back.
This place is fantastic. I come here all the time.
Delicious wonton soup. We also had pad tai and general tso chicken. Very good fried rice. Generous portions . We love it!!!!!
I've eaten here several times. I highly recommend the Appetizer Spicy Beef and Noodle Soup (game changer!) and the Popcorn Rock Shrimp. I normally get the Sichuan style entrees. It's spicy, so I recommend getting 1 level less on the spice rating out of 5.
The food here was good as always, but there was a fruit fly problem that left us waiving flies off our food all night. Service was fine and the food came out quickly.
The service was ABYSMAL!!! It took 35 minutes to get water glasses. After the first glass of water, we asked several times for refills and never got them an hour later. Eventually we got up, walked behind the bar, and filled them up ourselves. Food good but overpriced. Will not be returning to this restaurant.
Great service, delicious food. Appetizers came out extremely hot. Would've appreciated a warning before hand! Seats need replacing; leather is worn. Overall great experience though; attentive staff, food was out quick and we were happy with all our food choices!
Always a pleasure at Jane G's. Interesting menu, lots of options, and food is well-prepared.
WE EXPECTED SMALL PORTIONS GIVEN THAT IS WAS RESTAURANT WEEK. AN ORDER FOR TWO WAS ENOUGH FOR FOUR. WONDERFUL SPICES AND FLAVORS, CREATIVE DISHES.
LOVED OUR MEAL.
great duck and sizzling beef was super good. Jane G special fried rice you must get if you like friend rice and the dumpling sampler we shared and was very tasty. Place needs to be cleaned up a bit and get rid of those cheezy lanterns and make it more sleek. Service needs to be upped as well as I wanted a second glass of wine and our waiter was no where to be found. You also need to get chinese spicy mustard in not the frenchs yellow kind.
My friend and I had a delicious lunch. WE had the wonton soup, spring rolls, chicken and mushroom dumplings and rock shrimp. It was absolutely fabulous. Nice portions and fabulous service.
the food was great and the waitress and the hostess went out of their way to make us feel like royalty. A handsome, low-cost lunch menu that is always satisfying and the flounder in ginger/scallion sauced was terrific.
The food and service has always been consistently good. Jane Gs will always been a twice a week staple for my friends and me!
Big portions. That's about it. Appetizers better than main. Very average and impersonal ambience
OUT WAITER WAS NOT SO GOOD SO THE EXPERIENCE WAS NOT THE BEST. I TOOK TWO PEOPLE FOR THEIR BIRTHDAYS. ONE ORDERED THE DONE.. WAS NOT GOOD. WAY TOO SPICY AND THE WAITER DID NOT SAY IT WAS.- BONE IS ALL THE DUCK PIECES TOO. NOTHING CAME OUT FOR BIRTHDAY AND THE WAITER SAID HE FORGOT TO LOOK ON THE RESERVATION.
I DO LIKE IT HERE..I GO REGULARLY AND I THINK THE WAITER MADE THE EXPERIENCE NOT SO GOOD BUT HIS LACK OF TELLING US THINGS AND NOT NOTICING IT WAS A BIRTHDAY.. WE EVEN EXCHANGED GIFTS SO IT WAS EVIDENT IT WAS SOMETHING.
As a first time diner I wasn't blown away, even after a friend's recommendation. The decor is attractive but they feel the need for loud music piped in, so it's harder to hear. The servers were good, except they didn't help with our first time ordering. The apps of rock shrimp and dim sum sampler were very good, but the entrees were less than spectacular. I ordered duck in beer sauce and asked for less spicy, but it was so spicy that we had to send it back. Chicken in cashews was just okay, and udon with seafood was not great. The fried seafood plate had no flavor whatsoever. I think they have to be better than this but we will give it one more try. Just be careful ordering as this is higher priced than most Asian restaurants.
I love this place. Ms. Jane, her son, and the entire crew aim to please. The food is delicious and adjusted to your spice level.
Excellent lunchtime menu in this higher-end but great value restaurant.
Always love some good Asian food. Pretty much enjoyed what we got. The food was great and service was quick. Good for a nice evening date in the city. Not too quiet and not too loud. Would go again.
Some reviewers felt the food here is not authentic but as an American eating Chinese food I thought it was more than fine. Everything we had was delicious with the only exception being the parsley rubbed spare ribs. Tender, but tasted too herbal and dry. The Dan Dan noodles were excellent. I liked the fact that brown rice is offered with entrees as well as the usual white rice. And any dish can be ordered spicy on a scale of one to five. Specialty cocktails were great. The food portions are quite large but very reasonably priced. Service very attentive without being overbearing. Recommended.
Fresh and carefully prepared food.
Very attentive servers.
