Jamestown FiSH Ratings and Reviews
What a wonderful place! We heard about this restaurant and wanted to visit it for a while. Finally we visited it last Friday. It was 4 of us. We came for the last day of Newport Spring Restaurant week. We were seated downstairs. Fireplace was a nice touch. The menu was very extensive, so many different and more important interesting choices to choose from. We all have difficult time to choose just one dish in each category. “Jamestown Fish” definitely didn’t cut any corners for the restaurant week as some restaurants do: great selection in every category and even more important excellent execution.
For appetizers we had scallop ceviche, poached oysters and their special fish soup. All excellent dishes, we loved them all! Also restaurant has great wine selection, we ordered couple of bottles and liked it a lot.
For Main course we had Seafood cookpot (it had $15 supplement, but it was worth it, seafood was cooked very nicely, not overcooked, just right), also beef cheeks and sea bass. All great dishes again. The desserts were very good as well. The size of the portions was just right for 3 course meal: not too big, not too small. Service was very good too. Nice ambiance. Needless to say we loved our experience and we will be back. Highly recommend this place.
Dined here for Newport Restaurant week because their menu was the most extensive option. We arrived a few minutes early and decided to start in the bar over looking the Newport bridge. Was so happy with the amount of bourbons I had to choose from. After a few minutes our table was ready and they offered to carry our drinks for us, such a nice touch. Our group of four was quickly seated by the fireplace, and the woman who sat us explained that they were actually offering their entire regular dinner menu as the restaurant week prix-fixe! She also was able to help us navigate the wine list, not suggesting anything too expensive it put all of us at ease immediately. Our server was knowledgeable and attentive, we were never without water or wine. Each course was better than the next, the scallop ceviche and the black sea bass were the winners of the evening. We ended up finishing back up in the bar upstairs with a wonderful nightcap. Thank you Fish for a memorable meal. We will be back with friends!!
It is always a pleasure to dine at Jamestown Fish. It is the best restaurant we have eaten at in Rhode Island for fish - a state known for seafood. The chef trained in Europe, and put together an incredibly talented team. It is clear that they care about what they do. The menu offers healthy and delicious options, always in season and fresh ingredients. Each time we have eaten here we are so pleased with the food, wine, service and charming atmosphere. Bravissimi!
The food, as always, was very good. Our entree was delayed, but the server brought us an extra appetizer and deleted our two glasses of wine from the bill (both unsolicited), so can't complain. I was a bit sorry they didn't have their delicious pot de creme on the dessert menu. Overall, very good.
Imaginative menu, fresh ingredients. Service wasn't super quick, but a good meal takes time to prepare. Plan on 90 minutes. Menu could be expanded, and I hope it will. No beef option, just a braised stew. Would have liked a red meat choice. I realize it's a seafood restaurant but if some in your party don't care for fish, an option for them would be helpful since this is a great spot for get-togethers.
I was disappointed in the clams linguine dish. Have had it several times before & it had small, juicy clams. This time, had very large tough, dry clams, unable to even cut with a knife. My husband's fish dish was served with no plate presentation, small serving for the price. Maybe an off night for the restaurant??
Our dinner was perfect as always, and as always the cocktails were also perfect. Their wine list is extraordinary , and I was amazed at our previous visit that a white Pessac-Leognan was available by the glass. Most importantly, the service is impeccable , and it's apparent that the staff really want you to enjoy the dining experience. The chef comes out to visit each table, which always adds to a feeling of being a valued patron. Elise , who had been our server on other occasions, was as helpful as always, graciously deboning the Dover sole in the kitchen for me. We had also been there with family on Christmas Eve for the feast of Seven Fishes and loved it. My husband and I were there for Valentine's Day and were seated by the fireplace where we enjoyed a wonderfully festive menu. The only drawback is that it can be noisy unless you have a really, really early reservation, and for people who truly enjoy talking to one another, it is a bit of a challenge.
It was OK. My husband & I went for a Valentine's Day dinner because it's local and we hadn't eaten there yet. The service, though pleasant, was ever-so-slightly delayed; and it wasn't busy when we were there. He had fish and liked it. I had scallops. They were tender, tasty, but nothing memorable.
It just wasn't good enough for 2 salads, 2 entrees, sparkling water and a glass of wine to cost 112.00 before tax and tip.
We won't go again.
We have eaten at Fish several times. The food is always fresh and good. Unfortunately this time there was a "glitch" in the service and it took unusually long. Without us saying anything they comped our drinks and apologized. Any restaurant can have this happen. What matters to me is what they do about it. Fish stepped up and did what they could before we mentioned the problem. I give them high marks for that. They turned a problem into a good experience.
We get to Jamestown, just one Island over from Newport, about once or twice a year. We make certain to include a dinner at Jamestown Fish
The attention to every detail of the meal is a real treat. We both had Italian squash soup to start and that alone was worth the trip.
For my main course, I went simple; I enjoyed linguine with clam sauce. Simple does not mean easy and this meal did not disappoint. The sauce had plenty of tender fresh clams and just the right blend of garlic and seasoning.
My wife had black sea bass which was quite good. But the stand out side dish was the golden roasted beets.
All in all, an exquisite dinner. Fish is not to be missed.
We'd gone one other time for an Anniversary, and this time for New Years Eve.
They had a wonderful 4 course meal with an obundance of choices and it was lovely.
Our son was with us from Seattle and all three of us ordered different things. We shared bites of each other's selections and we all were jealous of what the others had ordered; everything was great and the atmosphere was wonderful for both occasions.
It may have become our "special occasion" destination.
WOW. We have had many good meals in many good restaurants. This one outshines them all. The dining room is warm and comfortable with plenty of space between tables--thank you! The menu has something for everyone. We wanted to taste all of it--and we tried to. The wine and drink list--one of the best we have seen. But the meal was flawless, from the bread to the appetizers, meal and through dessert. We loved everything.
This is world class food in an approachable dining room with unobtrusive and exceptional service. When Matt came out to say hello we got it completely. Jamestown Fish is inhabited by people who have a passion for great food and love what they do. Happy fifth anniversary and Buon Capodano. We will be back--I hope soon. All we can say is YOU MUST EAT THERE!!
Our server Allison was very nice and took the time to answer all of our questions and gave good recommendations. The support staff was also in point and they all worked well as a team. We also got a chance to speak with the chef on our way out. He was very welcoming and kind. We will definitely be back in the future! Thank you!
The staff at Fish are amazing and really make the night. They are very attentive without being overbearing. The selection of seafood is the best in Rhode Island in my opinion. The restaurant is very New England style with a welcoming fireplace. It never disappoints.
I have been to this restaurant many times and I would leave a 5 star review for every visit. Atmosphere and service are great but I think most impressive thing about this place is the food and attention to ingredients. The menu changes daily based on what is fresh and available. They take such pride in this and using sustainable and perhaps underutilized fish. Some favorites we have enjoyed include skate, lobster and truffle pasta, halibut with salsa verde and the list goes on. I also really enjoy their seasonal cocktails. They also have great desserts, especially the cheesecake which has such a great texture. An absolute favorite and always on point.
Excellent fresh seafood prepared very well. One issue - I specifically asked for my scallops cooked medium as I don't like the texture of raw. They came out medium rare. The server offered to have them "put them under the broiler" which would have ruined the rest of the dish. I ate one and took the others home and cooked them the next day. Servers/kitchen should listen to requests from diners.
Outside of the restaurant not checking us in, the food was very good. Service was a little slow probably because we were the only customers sitting outside on the deck. Was a little disappointed that the outside dining was so isolated but would try dining there again in the future
Excellent meal! We were a party of 5 that decided to meet there for an early dinner. Appetizers (oysters and shrimp) were great. We ended up with 3 different entrees - the lobster linguini, the striped bass and a halibut. All were excellent and no fish was left behind. We also ordered multiple desserts: the chocolate ice cream was particularly good. Definitely planning a return trip!
We visit Jamestown Fish frequently; it is one of our favorites. Matt McCartney has compiled an excellent wine list and he updates it frequently with wines he has tasted on trips to wine growing regions. The menu is excellent especially for seafood lovers with very fresh locally sourced food. The inside is a white tablecloth restaurant with dignified ambience and excellent service. The patio is a great place for an outdoor informal lunch or dinner, and has the same menu as the main restaurant plus a pizza oven. Upstairs is a friendly bar with great decor, and just outside the bar is a deck with a few tables where we often go for a quiet meal. The wait staff is friendly and accommodating and the service is efficient. Jamestown is a lovely little seaside town on an island that is easily accessible to the mainland by bridge. Jamestown Fish is just up the street from the town dock and this is a great place for a stroll after dinner.
Once again, Jamestown Fish did not disappoint. The service is pleasant but not intrusive, the servers are knowledgeable and the food is always very good. I had the halibut and it was cooked to perfection and delicious. My husband had the pasta with clams, which is made without butter, cheese or wine, so it is very pure, , but different from most other places. My husband enjoyed every last bite. Fresh clams should be able stand on their own flavor with very little help and the chef has this just right. Our appetizer, which we shared, was a special that evening (I think) and it was great. Peekytoe crab with avocado - delicious. Oh, and dessert, was divine - a coconut passion fruit tiramisu that we didn't have room for, but not a bite was left. It sounded so good we had to order it and we are glad we did. Worth the calories! They also serve wonderful bread with the best olive oil. We bought a bottle to enjoy at home.
First time dining at Jamestown Fish. We ate in the lovely dining room. Food and service was excellent. Great wine list. Our table for two was a little close to a larger party but we enjoyed the evening and look forward to returning. If you like Dover Sole- it was outstanding!
