Our first visit to a winter monthly "wine vintage" dinner was memorable. It is an elegant menu but an informal, compatible, and even collaborative event. Diners have access to vintage wines at a reduced price per glass, and guests are encouraged to bring similar (but less expensive) wines to share among the tables. Diners may choose from the regular menu, but also from a small and modestly priced prix fixe menu: in our case, local oysters with yuzu and American caviar, and an excellent lobster risotto. A memorable experience - not to be missed.
This is restaurant week in Newport, and therefore most of the establishments produce a limited menu (usually three appetizers, three entrees, three desserts.) In this milieu, Jamestown Fish more than stands out: a diverse list of eight appetizers and nine entrees. Chef Matthew Maccartney and his staff demonstrate a noted commitment to both the principles of fine dining and the concept of "restaurant week." Our dinners were superb: smoked salmon and then grilled salmon, and salt cod pate and then black pasta with clams. The notable wine list is broad, deep, and well-priced. But a continual caveat (we have now been here five times:) it is VERY noisy. My wife and I have a deep affection for this place, but we must lean over the two top to converse.
Our first visit to Fish -- Ambiance was lovely -- elegant, but not stuffy. Service was excellent, as was the food. Menu (Restaurant Week) made it hard to choose! Much better variety than many Restaurant Week menus. All in our group enjoyed everything they ordered and the already positive experience was topped off by the chef's visit to our table. We will be recommending
Jamestown Fish to our friends and will be back.
Our meals were amazing. My husband had the venison, I had swordfish, both were excellent. The venison blew us away, and was presented beautifully. We also loved the duck meatballs we tried for an appetizer. The swordfish was cooked to perfection. The night we were there, there was an Austrian wine distributor there and we were able to try a number of wines in 3-oz. portions, we really enjoyed that. I've read reviews that say the portion sizes are small and the restaurant is too expensive, but we thought it was a good value. It's fine dining, and if people are expecting something different they might be disappointed.
Wow ! The food was simply delicious. I find that few restaurant's these days have the knowledge on how to properly serve a guest at any price point but this restaurant certainly does.
We were flattered by all the chef when he visited our table and my guests beamed from the all the attention.
This is a special place and I'll be back for my next special occasion :)
Our fourth visit to Jamestown Fish in fourteen months; this was one of three which were "first rate." Chef and owner Matthew MacCartney is highly skilled, and he has assembled a strong team. The menu is traditional with innovative touches: lobster with corn, for example, but with highlights of blueberries and cashews. The wine list is deep and broad, with several affordable choices. One caveat: Jamestown Fish is quite popular, and large tables (setting up a ten top on the evening of our visit) can lead to disconcerting noise and kitchen slow downs. Nevertheless, Jamestown Fish is usually an exceptional experience, and there is no question that it is among the two or three best restaurants in the Newport area.
One of the better restaurants in Jamestown, alongside Simpatico, although the choices are fairly limited. Stylish interior, but it was quite noisy on our visit over a late summer weekend. Food choices are "creative" rather than conventional/standard. Worth a visit.
Dining room was extremely noisy. Only 3 tables for 2 in main dining room. 2 of the 3 tables were jammed between other larger tables, and 1 table was wedged in a corner with 1 of the seats literally underneath the fireplace mantle and adjacent to a small bar (the table we were seated at). And when I say adjacent, we were 2 feet from the people seated at the bar, we might as well have just sat at the bar. Menu was limited, particularly for someone with a gluten allergy. Additionally, my wife is the big seafood lover and I often accommodate her wishes to try new seafood places, as most good restaurants have alternative faire for just this situation. What a total disappointment here. Only 1 non-seafood menu item, a tiny, barely edible ribeye steak with fries for an outrageous price. What a joke. Adding insult to injury, the chef makes his way around, apparently to ask people about their meals. Wouldn't really know, however, he barely breaks stride at our table, does not acknowledge me, mumbles something to my wife about her meal and has already turned to walk away before she even responds! As a long time Rhode Island resident and frequent diner at upscale establishments, there is a long list of far better choices for my money -- never again!!!
We have been to fish several times each summer for the past 3 summers. This year it was terrible. We were told that there is a new chef. The food missed the mark.
The calamari was served in a tomato sauce that tasted like it came from a can. The scallops were barely cooked, we had to send them back for fear of getting sick.
This was our favorite restaurant in Jamestown.
Service was excellent. The ambiance remains best in class. We love the experience.
Hopefully this was just a bad night for the chef.
