Food was great as always, but too noisy, hard to hear each other. Fish would benefit from some sound absorbent materials.

Delicious. There are a lot of restaurants in Rhode Island so for me to say this was the best meal I have had out on a while is a big deal. Kudos to the chef.

Cute space and lively atmosphere. However, the service was lacking for a restaurant of that quality - slow to clear plates between courses and the like. Restaurant week menu was hit or miss - eggplant caponata was subpar, but some other things are ok.

This is restaurant week in Newport, and therefore most of the establishments produce a limited menu (usually three appetizers, three entrees, three desserts.) In this milieu, Jamestown Fish more than stands out: a diverse list of eight appetizers and nine entrees. Chef Matthew Maccartney and his staff demonstrate a noted commitment to both the principles of fine dining and the concept of "restaurant week." Our dinners were superb: smoked salmon and then grilled salmon, and salt cod pate and then black pasta with clams. The notable wine list is broad, deep, and well-priced. But a continual caveat (we have now been here five times:) it is VERY noisy. My wife and I have a deep affection for this place, but we must lean over the two top to converse.

Creative menu, expertly executed. Wait staff professional and friendly. Very attractive interior, but noise level made conversation difficult, nothing to absorb the din.

Our first visit to Fish -- Ambiance was lovely -- elegant, but not stuffy. Service was excellent, as was the food. Menu (Restaurant Week) made it hard to choose! Much better variety than many Restaurant Week menus. All in our group enjoyed everything they ordered and the already positive experience was topped off by the chef's visit to our table. We will be recommending
Jamestown Fish to our friends and will be back.

The meal was delicious. The only issue was the salt - I am on a low salt diet and did not realize there would be as much salt in the meal. Otherwise, the meal was excellent and the entire dining experience was superb.

This was Newport Restaurant Week which I always take advantage of each time. In fact, I am going back tonight. I usually go during the warm months so can sit outside, have starters, oven pizza made on premises & a nice bottle of wine.

Second time there--while the food was good we thought it was better the first time. We liked it enough to dine again to give it another chance. Our waiter was outstanding.

Good food with an over emphasis on presentation. Portions are on the small side. Noise level is off the charts loud and tables are incredibly close.

Our meals were amazing. My husband had the venison, I had swordfish, both were excellent. The venison blew us away, and was presented beautifully. We also loved the duck meatballs we tried for an appetizer. The swordfish was cooked to perfection. The night we were there, there was an Austrian wine distributor there and we were able to try a number of wines in 3-oz. portions, we really enjoyed that. I've read reviews that say the portion sizes are small and the restaurant is too expensive, but we thought it was a good value. It's fine dining, and if people are expecting something different they might be disappointed.

Wow ! The food was simply delicious. I find that few restaurant's these days have the knowledge on how to properly serve a guest at any price point but this restaurant certainly does.
We were flattered by all the chef when he visited our table and my guests beamed from the all the attention.
This is a special place and I'll be back for my next special occasion :)

Our fourth visit to Jamestown Fish in fourteen months; this was one of three which were "first rate." Chef and owner Matthew MacCartney is highly skilled, and he has assembled a strong team. The menu is traditional with innovative touches: lobster with corn, for example, but with highlights of blueberries and cashews. The wine list is deep and broad, with several affordable choices. One caveat: Jamestown Fish is quite popular, and large tables (setting up a ten top on the evening of our visit) can lead to disconcerting noise and kitchen slow downs. Nevertheless, Jamestown Fish is usually an exceptional experience, and there is no question that it is among the two or three best restaurants in the Newport area.

One of the better restaurants in Jamestown, alongside Simpatico, although the choices are fairly limited. Stylish interior, but it was quite noisy on our visit over a late summer weekend. Food choices are "creative" rather than conventional/standard. Worth a visit.

Dining room was extremely noisy. Only 3 tables for 2 in main dining room. 2 of the 3 tables were jammed between other larger tables, and 1 table was wedged in a corner with 1 of the seats literally underneath the fireplace mantle and adjacent to a small bar (the table we were seated at). And when I say adjacent, we were 2 feet from the people seated at the bar, we might as well have just sat at the bar. Menu was limited, particularly for someone with a gluten allergy. Additionally, my wife is the big seafood lover and I often accommodate her wishes to try new seafood places, as most good restaurants have alternative faire for just this situation. What a total disappointment here. Only 1 non-seafood menu item, a tiny, barely edible ribeye steak with fries for an outrageous price. What a joke. Adding insult to injury, the chef makes his way around, apparently to ask people about their meals. Wouldn't really know, however, he barely breaks stride at our table, does not acknowledge me, mumbles something to my wife about her meal and has already turned to walk away before she even responds! As a long time Rhode Island resident and frequent diner at upscale establishments, there is a long list of far better choices for my money -- never again!!!

We have been to fish several times each summer for the past 3 summers. This year it was terrible. We were told that there is a new chef. The food missed the mark.

The calamari was served in a tomato sauce that tasted like it came from a can. The scallops were barely cooked, we had to send them back for fear of getting sick.

This was our favorite restaurant in Jamestown.

Service was excellent. The ambiance remains best in class. We love the experience.

Hopefully this was just a bad night for the chef.

Jamestown Fish is a must in in and around Newport and you like seafood. We had scallops, which were outstanding, and others had the lobster, which they raved about. This was our second visit, and it did not disappoint.

My family and I were celebrating two birthdays. Although I don't expect special treatment or free desserts for birthdays, a casual acknowledgment goes a long way. The food was hit or miss in general. Some things were good some things were really not so good. I will say that the restaurant itself was very lovely and we liked the Noise level (lack thereof) and ambiance. Service was aloof.

While I'm not a fan of large plates at reasonable prices and prefer good, well prepared plates at any price, I was somewhat taken aback at the main course at this upscale Jamestown restaurant. It had very high marks from other diners, so we were excited to try it. We were very happy with the ambiance and service. Great outdoor bar area and delicious drinks with a very expansive wine list. The beginning of the meal began on a very high note. My husband had the seafood chowder which was loaded with rich layers of flavor and balanced perfectly. My salad was crisp, fresh and had little bites of delicious flavors from cheese and infused with fruit. The disappointment began with the main course. I ordered the squid pasta with clams. While the flavor was there, I had to dig to find the clams. It appeared to have very small chopped up ones, no whole clams anywhere to be found and this in the height of clam season on the shore! The dish was overpriced for the amount of pasta and protein served. My husbands piece of salmon was no more than 6 oz. and while it was cooked perfectly, it wasn't enough food for anyone other than if you were on a Weight Watchers diet. There was no starch and not even a generous amount of a vegetable to accompany it. Only a few mushrooms, and not exotic ones at that. We really left hungry, even after dessert which again was small and disappointing. Why after all this said would I recommend it? Well, the chef definately knows how to cook and the food tasted great, just needs a little looking after. We would try the outdoor bar menu if we return.

The food was, as always, outstanding. Extraordinarily well selected seafood prepared with flair and balance. The wine list is strong and not overpriced. I like the clean look of the dining room, but it gets extremely noisy when full. The service last Saturday evening was erratic. There were a lot of very attractive young people, but our waitress disappeared for long periods of time and the others were unwilling to help us with our needs. Our food was delivered by a couple of runners who dropped the plates in front of us, as if they could not stand to hold it any longer. I suspect I will return on quieter evenings in the future.

There were good things about this restaurant experience, and not so good things. First, the outdoor dining area looks great and was full when we arrived. Everyone looked happy, wait staff buzzing about, welcoming and attractive area. The indoor space was clean, lots of big windows and nicely decorated. Appetizers were awesome, I had a beet salad with just the right amount of dressing, flavorful, good ingredients. My husband had the melon gazpacho, also wonderfully flavored but a disappointingly small serving. Now for the not so good things. As we waited at the indoor hostess station, three different restaurant employees passed by us -- two even stopped to drop off menus on the desk -- without speaking to us. Not very welcoming. The room was small and quite loud, we had trouble hearing each other across our small table for two. The lighting was lowered almost as soon as we sat down, and I could barely read my menu. My water glass was empty through most of the meal and our waitress, although extremely polite and friendly, did not notice. More attention seemed to be paid to larger parties who were consuming wine and talking to the wine steward. The menu was one page, some standard entrees and some eclectic combinations. We asked the waitress about any specials, there had been one earlier in the evening but they were sold out (at 8pm). My husband ordered the mussels and squid ink linguini, remarked that although it was tasty, he couldn't remember any other restaurant that sent out mussels without the shells. As a chef, he found this strange, but did enjoy the dish. My salmon was accompanied by a seasonal mushroom saute and grilled strawberries. It was ... different... ok, weird. Both entrees were on the small side. My salmon did not include a starch, and the mushrooms and strawberries were more of a garnish than a side. We visit family in Rhode Island every summer and search for great restaurants. We probably wouldn't return here.
