Excellent meal as always, thank you Chef. Service was better this time, but still does not match the excellence of the menu. Always disappointed with the service, it WAS a bit more attentive and checked on the table more than usual. Still gaps in server presence, bad timing getting drinks (this is typical).
I have been to James Republic a few times: brunch, coffee, late breakfast (aka early lunch) and now dinner. If you are showing up at prime eating hours, you should make a reservation. They have great coffee and also amazing cocktails. Love their creativity behind the bar.
The food is dynamite. It's not a huge menu and dishes are meant to be shared. It's more than Tapas but smaller than a main dish. I hadn't seen my friend Mary in about a month and she happened to be in town for a business meeting and we met up at the restaurant.
We split the brussels sprouts -which are exceptionally tasty.
We split a hamburger -- so incredibly good. It tasted like the beef had been freshly ground. If you want it less pink in the middle, go with medium well done. The bun is very flavorful too which is a huge plus.
The Pomme Frites are extraordinarily crisp and sprinked with grated cheese..
Dessert was an apple cobbler with vanilla ice cream and hot caramel sauce. VERY Unusual as it was served in a mini skillet in which it was cooked. The edges were crispy and it looked more like a cake than it did apple crisp. I don't remember it being the fruit-filled dessert that I expected it to be but it was amazing despite my expectations.
Mary had a great cup of coffee and I had a capucinno. I had forgotten they did a Mexican Mocha hot drink which I would have ordered that. It's one of their signature coffees.
Service was really very very good.
Excellent food and service! We had a party of six on New Year’s Eve. We ordered a charcuterie board for starters and were not disappointed. The smoked olives were amazing! The entree selections were very good including a few vegetarian. The menu changes daily and ingredients are sourced locally. Our entrees included congee, chicken, steak, and the grass fed burger. The food was indescribably good and everyone left very satisfied. Don’t forget the desserts- delicious!!
I had high hope from walking in the door because it's beautiful. But unfortunately was ruined by the women server who waited on us. And was left waiting an 1 hour and a half for our food that according to the waitress we "never put in our order, but oh, you wanted me to put in your order earlier? " with an unapologetic attitude. Management came and tried to save it. But the food was poorly put together and executed. So we will not be coming back.
Found this restaurant while researching locations in Long Beach to celebrate our 15th anniversary. So glad we found them! The staff were incredibly kind and treated us like royalty, something that doesn't always happen when staff realize the reservation is for two women, not a traditional "couple". Cocktails and food were scrumptious. We were there on a week night; I'm not sure how the place is on the weekend, but it was a perfect spot for us that night. We took Lyft, so we could enjoy ourselves. The management picked up on that and sent over free champagne with our dessert. The decor is pleasing, comfortable, and spacious. We would definitely go there again and will take friends next time!
The food here was excellent and the prices wonderful. This was a business dinner and they had live music which in most cases would be very nice but it was WAY TOO LOUD! WE were there for a business dinner and had to almost shout to hear each other in conversation. Service was amazing and open air option was great for the nice weather.
i loved it other than the fact that no one really paid attention to us. i tried getting ahold of the servers for about 10 minutes before they noticed i was trying to get their attention. other than that the food was awesome and a very great place to have a quiet dinner out
Had a great dinner when our other plans for the night fell through. The Craft board was awesome, the salad and entrees a great size and bargain for the quality. Sadly they didn't even say "Happy Anniversary" even though it was noted in the Open Table reservation and our dessert wasn't that great but then again it wasn't the one our waiter recommended so it was our own fault. I've already recommended the place to a few of my friends and we look forward to trying brunch!
We came with the whole family one of which was a 4 month infant. The music was a bit loud and my daughter asked the hostess to ask the musicians to turn it down. They kindly granted our request. All of the food was excellent and our server was attentive, knowledgeable about the menu. We had oysters,, ravioli, a hamburger, brussels sprouts, a few salads (my fav had pickled cherries) each dish was well seasoned and well portioned for the price.
James Republic is vegan and vegetarian friendly. It is a local farm to table restaurant without a truly fixed menu based on fresh ingredients available that day. It is excellent for later dining (civilized adults) and staff is both attentive and knowledgeable.
I'll start out by saying the floor manager saved the night. We were seated promptly but we're completely ignored for the first 10 minutes. The hosted then approached us with water and apologized for the delay. 10-15 minutes later the server arrived, Unapologetic and indifferent. It was a red flag but we ordered drinks regardless and still no scence of urgency. Almost 10 min b4 drinks arrived. We were about to leave when the manager noticed and convinced us to stay. Food was great and manager very friendly but this could have been a great meal but all it takes is a waitress with a attitude to damper an other wise good experience The restaurant was not particularly busy and I've been here at 4 other times. I guess service is why I don't return as often as I would like.
It's a nice spot but the menu has become very limited and the staff just feels different. That doesn't really quantify much but it's hard to articulate. We used to come more often but it feels like new management has replaced the very friendly and helpful staff with a staff that's more interested in upselling everything. They're nice enough but there are fewer severs and the menu is MUCH shorter.
This is a beautiful restaurant with an exceptionally appealing and creative menu. The service, however, did not match the ambience.
We arrived at 6:00, when the restaurant was not full at all, but at 6:15 I had to go up to the hostess to see if we even had a waiter. In 15 minutes we hadn't even been offered water! When the waiter finally came over, he was nice enough, but he didn't apologize for arriving so late.
Then, he gave us obviously incorrect information about wines by the glass (something I was able to see just by looking at the wine list), he didn't know basic features of the dinner menu, and he neglected to tell us that two items from the dinner menu had already sold out. (We ordered one of these items, and it wasn't till about 5 minutes later that he came back to tell us it wasn't available.) Throughout the meal, I had to flag him down for water, drinks, and, later, the check. It was odd, because I would see him walking through his section, but he didn't understand that he needed to look at his tables and customers while he did that. Once we finished our dinner, our dirty plates sat in front of us for at least ten minutes before I flagged him down and asked him to clear our table. I kind of felt like I was at Denny's!
All that said, I will come back again because of the atmosphere and the food, but I hope that the waiter I got that night isn't typical of the service there.
