Great before theater restaurant! Always love the sushi!
The only reason to eat here is the proximity to the La Jolla Playhouse. Food is overpriced and just average. Selections for gluten-free are few. Our server was good, helpful. But so expensive! Our creme brulee was stone cold, and had no hard sugar crust, a real disapointment. Entrees were just ok.
This is the perfect place for a nice dinner before theater at the La Jolla Playhouse.
The draw is covenience to the Playhouse and one dish- crunchy Lobster/Shrimp starter.
Wine list is marginal, with excuses about its limitations that management is not open to input, and re cost. I know of many wines that are much better at even lower cost.
Also excuses why they can't serve expresso - all weak.
Without the Playhouse Idoubt the restaurant could compete and survive.
Out of every wine in their list except for the house wine.
A must if you're going to the La Jolla Playhouse; it could not be more convenient. We had an excellent meal; both sushi and other menu options were good.
Terrible wine list!!
Overpriced, undercooked, underserved - We were one of first tables. Ordered drinks and then other tables came in and I noticed they were served drinks first. Saw mine sitting up at bar for a long time. Eventually went and got them and served myself. A filet mignon was ordered medium and came out rare to raw. Also, scallops and shrimp dish was ordered and scallops undercooked. ambiance was more like the college cafeteria and bathrooms outside were definitely like a college campus bathrooms at a public park.
Much better places to dine in San Diego.
WE ALWAYS TRUST THEM TO HAVE SOME VERY GOOD SUSHI BEOFRE OUR SHOW AT THE PLAYHOUSE AND WE ARE NOT DISAPPOINTED! THANK YOU
Very good, very convenient!
Convenient and very pleasant before seeing a play. Thank you for being so accommodating.
Usually James Place provides an excellent dining experience, but our last visit was problematic. Service was slow, one of the dinners was cold, and we were rushed to make the show at La Jolla Playhouse. Every place can have an off night, and our last visit was it.
Generally good, but ordered kettle one Martini , received it on the rocks (ick) and billing $17.00 overpriced. We will visit again(convenient for LJ playhouse) but will ask more questions of the server. Would be nice to have small flower(s) on tables- nice they have tablecloths.
Menu had a wide selection, unfortunately not all food was available. As explained by our server James' Place is only opened during the Theater season. The day we attended was the last performance (Matinee of Kizz...). Because of that only small amount of food is purchased by the kitchen. It is a lovely restaurant with a great ambiance. Our Server was wonderful!!
James Place has just gotten better and better! We’ve eaten there twice with friends in the past several weeks & the food and service were outstanding. Just wish they were open on “non-play” nights so we could eat there more often, which we would.
Very relaxing place to eat just before taking in a play at the La Jolla Playhouse.
Excessively noisy. I would consider that to be a huge negative for anyone wishing to hold a conversation at dinner –not “energetic“.
Half of the menu items were not available including all of the sushi.
We enjoyed the mini tuna tacos to start then for our entrees the scallops risotto and the Caesar with broiled chicken salad. All was delicious, fresh and well prepared. Service was attentive
Great restaurant and convenient when attending the La Jolla Playhouse Theatre. Get there early because the preparation of food does take about an 45 minutes to 1 hour. The food was excellent and I would do it again.
Nice ambiance. A bit pricey.
Excellent dinner. Pleasant service. Steps from the theater. Wonderful evening.
This is our favorite restaurant for its overall dining experience. You can’t get any better for its proximity to the theaters. The staff is great; attentive, alert, and professional.
This is the third time we have visited and encountered slow service. We also were disappointed that sushi was not available. My husband was served the wrong dinner and cocktail. The server did give a small discount but for the price of meals these kind of mistakes should not occur. I had almost finished my meal before his correct meal came out of the kitchen. Also, salt and pepper appear to be a scarce commodity at the restaurant. You can request them but they are quickly removed after a short period. We loved the convenience of dining here prior to a show but will try a different location next time.
Perfect place to dine if you have plans to attend a show at the La Jolla Playhouse. Dine at a lovely restaurant and don't worry about getting to the theater on time. Very nice experience.
While I love the crunchy shrimp and lobster appetizer, I think the entrees are pricy. My continued complaints are that there are constant excuses as to why patio service is so seldom available. My huge and constant complaint is that the wine list is wEAK!!!! No excuses that there are not really good wines for even less money. I was told that management knows this but aren't open to input or to consider other wine reps. This is enough for me NOT to recommend the restaurant. The cocktail I had as a replacement was also one of the worst I have had. There are lots of good restaurants so if timing was not an issue when we attend the Playhouse, we would unlikely eat there. Sad because we really like the shrimp and lobster. Take that off he menu and we'd rather do California Pizza Kitchen! Honest enough to get your attention?
My husband and I regularly attend performances at the La Jolla Playhouse so we take advantage of the onsite dining at James' Place. I always enjoy starting my dining experience with a Lychee Elderflower Martini which is very refreshing. On the most recent occasion my husband and I shared a Grilled Spicy Shrimp appetizer followed by Grilled Salmon for me and Grilled Chicken Basil Pasta for my husband followed by a shared Creme Brulee. The staff from the time we arrive are all very friendly and welcoming. The ambience is just perfect for dining and conversation. Always a delight! A great beginning for an evening at the theater.
Excellent selections available. So convenient to La Jolla Playhouse. Had a wonderful after-show dinner. Shared appetizers and desserts were delicious and everyone enjoyed their entrees. Would come back, for sure.
Not only is the food great but really it's the only game in town when going to any of the La Jolla theaters!!
Excellent location for pre-theatre & range of tables well ahead of show, then filled up quickly & lively. Friendly & responsive service, good menu, though not much for this vegetarian. Judging by the age group & the lighting, reading small type of the bill was hard not just for us.
First time out for fine dining in San Diego, and I would say that coming from Mexico City’s culinary scene, James’s place is very good. The sushi is remarkable. Everything was perfect but I felt the overall ambiance a bit outdated. I think that’s where the could improve to make the pre-theater experience more enjoyable. Thank you!
As a fmr. Marketing Executive for numerous "Top Brand-recognizable Companies", Manager Dennis is transforming James Place which needed some transforming...the food was excellent...excellent chef...service, too, however, at times spotty (i.e., forgetful)...had $6 wine & beer promo/ad from the previous week's La Jolla Playhouse program, however, upon inquiring when we received the bill, server Josh advised via Manager Dennis that this promo/ad only applied to House Wines & Draft Beers...there were no House Wines listed on the Wine Menu, however, Manager Dennis indicated upon our arrival that this promo/ad, which we showed him, applied to all wines & beers ("the devil is in the details!")...and so after two glasses of $13 vs. $6 supposedly Non-House Wine vs. House Wine, respectively, later, we had to pay up accordingly. This bothered us, however, other than this "Buyer Beware Warning" to other theatre-goers, James Place is a good place to go prior to attending La Jolla Playhouse productions.
Good food, nice place
This restaurant is so convenient when you are going to a play at La Jolla Playhouse. Just walk from one to the other. But it's definitely worthy of a special trip as well. I had the Chilean Sea Bass and a beat salad. Fabulous!
Only because of its location. More appetizers to share
Pre-theatre. Always enjoyable. Thanks.
Service much better than it has been in the past. Food continues to be quite good--the chocolate lava cake was excellent. For the first time in our many visits, reservations needed before La Jolla Playhouse performance.
This is a great place for a pre-theatre dinner. Nice atmosphere, good food, menu has a lot of choices at a variety of prices.
Nice restaurant, good food and convenient for theatre goers.
