Best Mahi Mahi tacos and lobster Mac and cheese ever!!!!
Fabulous Easter Brunch!
Been going to JB for 18 years. It’s sad to say but the food has gone bad.
Cool neighborhood place. Very nice staff. A bit pricey for what we ordered.
James beach has incredible customer service! We were late to our reservation and walked in right when the kitchen was closed. The manager, Solomon, heard that we came for dinner spoke with the chef and we were able to sit for dinner. Solomon was fantastic. His food and drink recommendations were delicious. Our waiter Tom was also very welcoming and nice. He made sure we were taken care of and also got us in for a dessert. It was great. There was great music and a dj right after we finished dinner and danced the night away.
Thank you Solomon and Tom you guys are fantastic!
Basic but yummy food. Great ambiance and great service.
I visited James Beach for the first time on April 10, 2019. I had a 7:30 reservation. The restaurant had a great vibe. The manager and server were not helpful or friendly. We were seated in a corner and we asked to move. We wanted this one table and we were told it was reserved. Nobody ever sat there the entire time we were dining. Our waitiress was not friendly or helpful. She never once asked if we wanted another drink. We ordered the brisket tacos and it looked more like dry strips of roast beef. It wasn’t edible. We sent it back and ordered carne asada tacos. They were just okay. The waitress wasn’t apologetic and actually seemed annoyed. The overall experience was disappointing since I have been wanting to visit this restaurant for awhile. I would not recommend it and I won’t be returning.
Great food, chill ambiance, yummy drinks
What a great find. We managed to get there before our booking for a couple of happy hours drinks and a snack at the bar. Sascha was very attentive and struck up conversation between serving.
We were then seated outside in the courtyard, which had a great ambiance. Mussells, pulled beef, mahi mahi tacos, and a little wine tasting. Our waiter was never far away and verh helpful, making our visit very enjoyable. His glasses, suspenders and wit made for a memorable night, if only I hadn't had so many wines, I would be adding hos name to my review. Sorry, but thank you.
Great local place with good selection of food and drinks
MAHI tacos we bland are overpriced and silverware was dirty. I’ve had better fish tacos that cost 3 dollars. Vibe of the restaurant wasn’t welcoming and employees all looked sad. Girlfriend ordered the egg sandwich with no bacon because she is vegetarian. They still gave her bacon. When we complained they just took the bacon off th sandwich and gave it right back, which is not cool when you’re a vegaarian. I asked for corn tortillas, they gave me flour. Server was nice but kind of seems like she was crying on the inside
Behind her smile.
what's left to say about James that hasn't been said? probably nothing. but here it is anyway: the best frickin lobster tacos ever invented, and if you sometimes like not to sip your tequila, try the prickly pear margarita. prickly is the right name for it. holy addictive batman.
We had a great time and a great meal at James Beach. I had the salmon, and my friends had the sole and the duck confit risotto. All three were delicious. The service was that right level of attentive but not intrusive. And, the room was buzzy and happening, but not too loud to hear the people you came with. I always enjoy myself at James Beach.
Tequila and tacilis baby!! Food was great Hadn’t been there for a long time by will be back
Horrible service. We ordered appetizers they came out with entrees. We ordered drinks they came out right after entrees. Sitting there for 40 minutes starving.
We had a fantastic experience reliving a hilarious scene from “I Love You Man”. Even beyond the gimmick of being the host of a piece of that movie, it is an all around gem of a location in the Venice beach area. We would go back here for date night, group party, quick lunch or any occasion that can be considered for delicious food and drink. The fish tacos lived up to their reputation!
Haven’t been here for years - way back when it was the West Beach Café. The inside room is still the same and for lunch it was very calm and peaceful. The food was delicious and we had a lovely waitress. I will come back again soon.
Way overpriced for what it is. They ride the “I Love You, Man” wave a bit hard. It’s been 10 years... food was mediocre at best
The service was extremely slow and disappointing. Food was good and so were drinks, but the place is so overpriced for the extremely slow and spotty service. My girlfriends and I were disappointed.
We made a reservation, got there early and were seated right away. As always, the food was excellent and the service was great! We have been there before and will definitely go there again!
Great service. However the positives end there. The dining room desperately needs a remodel. As far as food goes, calamari was bland and so over cooked it was like eating a rubber-band. The lasagna bolognese was good but not worth the price. The “filet” Sliders were certainly not made from quality filet mignon if in fact it was that cut of meat at all. Overall, it was way over priced for the food quality. $100 dinner for 3 with no alcohol.
James Beach is a great neighbourhood spot and perfect for catching with friends. Food is very good and while not the cheapest is quite fresh. Recommend it
Very mediocre food for very high prices
Brunch with Dad
We used to love James Beach but unfortunately it has gone downhill. Our salad had limp lettuce. When we asked for more dressing, they brought us the wrong dressing which we later realised after we poured it on our salad. The fish tacos were a bit dry. Truly sad because we used to love going on date nights to James Beach.
Lunch before Hockney at LA Louver. Food not up to our taste unfortunately. We were hoping to be bowled over. Scone were the best part of the meal. Probably won’t visit again.
Location, location, location combined with good quality California cuisine make this a great choice. A late afternoon lunch had extremely slow and some what inattentive service, though.
Great neighborhood gem (with a bit of fame) not to far of a walk from our Venice Beach apartment for the week. Great ambiance, service and food will have us coming back for sure. Recommended.
Overall experience was okay. Menu appeared to be more vegan friendly online than in actuality. Portions sizes weren't great. We only really went because restaurant was featured in movie "I Love You, Man." It was okay for that novelty. Also bummed this reservation wasn't eligible to receive OpenTable points - what's up with that?!
Nice. Was quickly in and out but others were able to stay and sip their drinks. Family and couples dined.
Decor was tired and dated. They had outdated menus. Finally brought us the correct one. Didn’t have 2 different items in that menu. Servers had no clue.
Menu was great - many good things to choose from. We shared the Dungeness crab and avocado salad, which was very good. Had to have the tacos - Mahi-mahi and Duck Confit. Out of this world. Raspberry sorbet and cookies for dessert. Cocktails were perfect. Service was excellent. Can’t wait to hit James’ Beach again!
James Beach is such a great spot for a bite or to celebrate a special occasion.
The food was good but the service was not. Our waiter was uninformed waiter as to drink options on the menu, main courses arrived just as we were starting our appetizers, there were no offers of additional drinks, water or coffee, and such a long wait for dessert that the ice cream had melted by the time it arrived at our table. There are plenty of other places with good food and good service in the area so we are unlikely to return.
Very nice atmosphere for our Valentine's Day dinner, but it depends to some extent on which room you are seated in. The patio area, although enclosed, seemed a bit chilly the evening we were there. Luckily we sat in the dining room. Everything we ate was very good. We did not try the famous tacos, however, since they seemed expensive for tacos.
While the food was excellent, and the service was equally great, the overall atmosphere, especially being on Valentine's Day, made the dining experience exceptionally memorable. The staff, which included both or server as well as the fellas who bused the tables, had a unique way of always meeting our mealtime needs without ever "interrupting" our Valentine's Day outing. I'd have to say that the character of James Beach, which also included the background music, only enhanced our meal. Oh, and the bar tender does a great job as well.
Really enjoyed a nice quiet dinner with drinks at James Beach. The dining room inside is nice and quiet. You also have the bar area (outside with heaters) if that is what you are looking for.
The Spinach dip was fantastic, fish tacos also awesome as advertised.
Great food. Great atmosphere.
I have to admit there was a crowded night. the servers tries, but the kitchen was overwhelmed, could not deal with the crowd. Reservation was honored, but the food was poor,
Our group had 4 different entree's but all entree's mediocre. The calamari was over cooked an very poor, almost not eatable.
Eat here several times a year
Disappointing service tonight
They were jammed because of big event across the street, but no excuse for substandard service. Screwed up order. And lousy service.
