Decor was tired and dated. They had outdated menus. Finally brought us the correct one. Didn’t have 2 different items in that menu. Servers had no clue.
Menu was great - many good things to choose from. We shared the Dungeness crab and avocado salad, which was very good. Had to have the tacos - Mahi-mahi and Duck Confit. Out of this world. Raspberry sorbet and cookies for dessert. Cocktails were perfect. Service was excellent. Can’t wait to hit James’ Beach again!
James Beach is such a great spot for a bite or to celebrate a special occasion.
The food was good but the service was not. Our waiter was uninformed waiter as to drink options on the menu, main courses arrived just as we were starting our appetizers, there were no offers of additional drinks, water or coffee, and such a long wait for dessert that the ice cream had melted by the time it arrived at our table. There are plenty of other places with good food and good service in the area so we are unlikely to return.
Very nice atmosphere for our Valentine's Day dinner, but it depends to some extent on which room you are seated in. The patio area, although enclosed, seemed a bit chilly the evening we were there. Luckily we sat in the dining room. Everything we ate was very good. We did not try the famous tacos, however, since they seemed expensive for tacos.
While the food was excellent, and the service was equally great, the overall atmosphere, especially being on Valentine's Day, made the dining experience exceptionally memorable. The staff, which included both or server as well as the fellas who bused the tables, had a unique way of always meeting our mealtime needs without ever "interrupting" our Valentine's Day outing. I'd have to say that the character of James Beach, which also included the background music, only enhanced our meal. Oh, and the bar tender does a great job as well.
Really enjoyed a nice quiet dinner with drinks at James Beach. The dining room inside is nice and quiet. You also have the bar area (outside with heaters) if that is what you are looking for.
The Spinach dip was fantastic, fish tacos also awesome as advertised.
Great food. Great atmosphere.
I have to admit there was a crowded night. the servers tries, but the kitchen was overwhelmed, could not deal with the crowd. Reservation was honored, but the food was poor,
Our group had 4 different entree's but all entree's mediocre. The calamari was over cooked an very poor, almost not eatable.
Eat here several times a year
Disappointing service tonight
They were jammed because of big event across the street, but no excuse for substandard service. Screwed up order. And lousy service.
Solomon is an excellent host - wait staff is amazing - drinks are great. Weeknight deals are awesome. Highly recommend this old Venice stand-by
My favorite west side restaurant. Always delicious and a fun casual ambiance.
Service was absolutely terrible. I went in the kitchen and asked the waiter if he was ever coming back.
Went to James’ Beach for our last meal in Venice and it was absolutely outstanding. The food was incredible, the service was fantastic. My husband and I had a wonderful evening here which exceeded our expectations. The next time we’re in town we’ll certainly be back!
We had a nice time. Celebrating our anniversary. Disappointed that there was no lobster. Charged for something on our bill that we didn’t get, but was fixed by server.
Service was a bit slow, took about 20 minutes to get our first round of drinks. I suspect the bar was just understaffed. Once they showed up the drinks were good.
The food was decent, but really nothing special and especially not worth the high price. There are probably other places nearby where you can get a much better meal for the money.
We enjoyed a terrific happy hour in the terrace bar on a blustery January afternoon. The wine was whipping and the $7 cocktails were shaking. Bliss by the fire with a palsy barman, great ceviche, tasty "buffalo" cauliflower and a serviceable turkey burger slider. El-cheapo. The only improvement would be a fresher veggie (not fried) on the happy hour menu. Otherwise, we'd be there most anytime.
Thoroughly enjoyed the food and service at James Beach today! Started with oysters, rolled on to ceviche and mahi mahi tacos. Can’t wait to go back again soon!
Food was excellent but service suffered by being short staffed... restaurant indicated 1 called out and another suffered a cut. Great ceviche!!
Excellent experience. Great food and service. Awesome beach restaurant. We will return .
This place was so cute! My boyfriend and I love the movie ‘I Love You Man’ and have been wanting to come for so long and just happened to be in the area and defiantly was not disappointed from the hype of the Mahi Mahi tacos!! I think it’s a perfect place for any occasion and will defiantly be coming back!
Nice food not mind blowing
Service a little slow but very nice waitress she did explain they were busy indoors.
Would go again, dinner next time they have some great dinner dishes on the menu
Great food, great drinks, great service, great atmosphere. Greaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great!! What more could anyone ask?
Great neighborhood place
The waitress wasn’t pleasant and the food wasn’t all the great. The restaurant overall isn’t all what the hype says it is, truly it’s way over priced.
James Beach is our home away from home. James has created a space where everyone feels easy and relaxed. It is our destination for a relaxed delicious meal with very good wine list.
You do not come to James Beach for the cuisine. You come to be in the place itself which is a throw back to the "coastal days" when sea-side villages had tons of places like James Beach. It is a place to chill out, with plenty of room, an absolutely fabulous staff who are very welcoming, and food that you will want to parse. Go for the tacos. Avoid the Halibut ceviche which is inedible. We did not try the burgers and other ordinary fare but I expect they are fine. Will I return? Yes.
We made a last minute reservation for 10:15pm since we were flying into LAX that evening. We did get a heads-up call while on the plane that the kitchen closes at 10:30pm so we would have to order our food right away, which was fine! We arrived ready to order.
The bouncer at the front was not friendly at all, but that didn't take away from the amazing hospitality we received from the person who sat us and the waiter that served us. Our food orders were taken in right away and our drinks followed shortly after.
We got the fish tacos and the lobster tacos with the in-house made tortillas. They were so fresh and tasty and well worth their popularity from the "I Love You, Man" movie.
It is a little on the pricier side, so I would go back here for a special occasion.
Purse was stolen
Love this place but disappointed recently by fried chicken. Flavor was good but skin sloughed off and it was a little greasy. Mushy broccoli and creamed spinach with way too much cheese. Wait staff pleasant and hard-working.
One of our favorite, long-time Venice restaurants. Consistently good and always welcoming.
After a walk along the nearby picturesque Venice canals, had great fish tacos "James' Beach" style and margaritas on Taco Tuesday. Very quiet due in part to Thanksgiving in a couple of days. Everyone else was traveling, baking, or just saving up for the big meal.
Always the best here
Dinner was very nice. We wanted a place where we could chat at a reasonable noise level and eat at a leisurely pace; James Beach was fine on both counts. Food was very good, though portions for some of the meals were smallish. The only comment we have is it is a bit pricey for what is served. Otherwise, nice, interesting menu, and appreciate the willingness to accommodate to individual dietary requests.
Overall well done.
Seafood choices were great. Perfectly cooked and presented. Best of all was the service. Staff went above and beyond. Highly recommended.
great ending to our honeymoon tour
Always an enjoyable experience! Food and service excellent
I've been here at least 15 times over the past 5-7 years and the food and service are consistently great. It has a relaxed vibe but still offers a great atmosphere for a wide range of occasions. The patio is more lively so if you're looking for a quieter white table cloth experience just go inside. I've always had great service by servers who never rush the meal. I like the menu because it has something for everyone and that includes healthy options. The wine pours are good, but the Martini pours could be a bit more generous. James Beach is an all-around favorite for me. Hope you enjoy it, too.
Great all around. From cocktails to food to service. our go to for consistent quality and service. Bus boys are the best
James Beach is one of the best places ive ever been to. We celebrated our anniversary there and were given a complimentary dessert by the waitstaff. Our service was wonderful and we can’t wait to visit again. Fish tacos are hands down the best ever!
