Jake's on the Lake Ratings and Reviews
Nice atmosphere, a bit noisy, but not exceptionally so. We didn't try the bar, but it was enticing. The menu is all ala carte, but the plates include nice complements so extra sides are only for the very hungry. The sea scallops were wonderful, but sparse (only three); the sea bass portion was just about right, but still on the small side. The presentations and taste were superb for both dishes. Wonderful service. Prices were on the moderately high side ($32 for sea scallops, $34 for sea bass) and the wine by the glass selection was limited but adequate.
We'd go back.
Jake's is a fabulous restaurant with the best views arguably on all of Tahoe. The food has always been excellent and healthy. We are athletes and notice that we don't gain weight, despite consistently sumptuous food. We eat out weekly in the Truckee-North Tahoe area, and this is our favorite!
My wife ordered filet mignon and it was prepared as requested and tasted good. I ordered crab stuffed lobster and it was unedible. The chef added so much salt that you could not taste the lobster or the crab, just lots and lots of salt; it was the only thing you could taste. I ate the meal to avoid disrupting a birthday celebration dinner, but will not do that again; I'll send it back immediately. Usually Jake's food is fine, but not this time. It spoiled an otherwise nice birthday outing.
There were 4 of us for dinner recently and I had been looking forward to my visit. (I have been there many times over the years.) Unfortunately our server was not up to par. It was a long wait until she came to the table to acknowledge us. Table was set for 6 and she only cleared away 1 place setting instead of 2. Her language was inappropriate at times and they brought dessert before our dinner plates had been removed. One friend who used to have her own food business, said she would have fired her.
The food was delicious... No problem there...
Better than expected! There were six of us at an outside table with lovely view of the lake, heat lamps for when the temperature dropped. Our waitperson was Great, but the bussers were too anxious, and removed plates while I was still eating. Everyone enjoyed their main course. The scallops looked to be the more inspired plate if the bunch. Corkage of our bottle was waived with the purchase of another .
We've eaten at Jake's before with OK results - never spectacular. Unfortunately this restaurant seems to be more focused on its operating efficiencies than satisfying the customer. A merchant in the neighboring mall had recommended a particular entree. But our server indicated that it was only available in the bar. Seriously? This restaurant apparently hasn't gotten the memo that the customer should be accommodated bar menu or not. The pork chops were very small and dry. The server wasn't particularly interested in keeping iced tea glasses filled. Overall the quality of the cuisine was just so-so.
There are many good restaurants in the Lake Tahoe area. Skip Jake's on the Lake.
The food was fine and the waterfront dining was excellent, but the service offered by our indifferent, distracted server was poor. Most of all be forewarned that the cold, inhospitable greeter at the entrance will immediately disavow your Open Table reservation with hostility.
It seems they have 2 reservation systems and rather than check both before rudely rejecting your reservation on Open Table, the hostess announces to one and all that you don't have a table.
Sad. We enjoy Kimo's and Hula Grill in Maui where the food and service are excellent. Too bad that charm hasn't migrated to this chain's California restaurant.
Outdoor seating with a view of the lake is beautiful.
Service very poor - mistake was made with one of the entrees (wrong meal delivered). Instead of ensuring that this entree was resubmitted as top priority, it was put back in queue behind many others (very busy night), resulting in the right entree being delivered 25 minutes after the first one. This on top of very slow service to begin with. Waiter was apologetic for mistake, and offered to pack the 2nd one in a "to go container". Manager did comp the one meal and dessert, but this was very poorly handled and a disappointment.
An old favorite, we go for the view, but the food was surprisingly good. The interior needs some serious updating, but who cares when you're looking at the lake and the snow-capped mountains beyond? The burrata appetizer was delicious and the swordfish special with a thai-inspired coconut curry sauce was a treat. The kids didn't find a ton on the menu, but their kids menu for youngers has several options. It's a bit overpriced, but we'll be back.
Love Jake's! Have been there a few times now and have never been disappointed. It was Father's Day and this was THE place my husband wanted to go to. We started with the lamb ribs and poke roll and both were really delicious. Our three main courses were tournedos, short ribs and the sea bass special. We LOVED them. Really, really good food and our server was totally on top of everything. Great evening, great Father's Day dinner. Totally recommend.
We were a party of 8 and I'm sure we were the loud ones. Alyson, our server was awesome. The views from the deck are excellent. The weather was perfect to have a sunset dinner on the deck. Drinks were perfect. Food was excellent. We all had a wonderful time and will make this a regular spot. Thank you again.
We've had family dinners at Jakes each time we go to Tahoe for years and normally have a great time, great food with interesting specials, and great service. We also go to their sister restaurant Dukes in Waikiki. This year was a major disappointment. We had reservations far in advance for Dec 30 holiday dinner. When we arrived they seated our party of 5 upstairs at a small booth in an empty room. The hostess rudely declined when we asked for a bigger table or to be seated downstairs where the ambience is much better. After speaking with a manager we were moved to a larger table, but in a corner next to a huge birthday party and with a view of the emergency exit. Our server was friendly but had way too many tables and as a result forgot multiple items and was not very attentive. Food was ok. $40 steaks were not cooked precisely to temp. Kids food took forever. Drinks weren't refilled and empty plates were not cleared. Overall, not the experience I expect for a $300+ dinner. Hopefully better next time or maybe time to try a new place.
Our 2 families reserved dinner for Christmas Eve here. Both families have had dinner and lunch here on multiple occasions prior to this visit. The food was fine - the short ribs, mac crusted mahi, seafood stew, tornadoes filet, and the crab special - all decent quality and quantity. We had reservations for 8 PM, the dining area had cleared out there were a couple of smaller tables, but it took over a hour for our main course to come out. Our water glasses were not refilled and no one checked on us or let us know that the meal was delayed. This was unusual, we have had better service at other times/days. Just a bit disappointed in the service .
Husband had beef ribs huge portion very tender. I had Asian inspired fish stew with rice cake that was deep fried. Also delicious but not very filling if you are hungry Delicious though. Wonderful deck overlooking lake if weather is good. Large bar We go often when we are up at the lake
We've. Been there before and ate in the bar, it was incredibly good from the staff to the food. Couldn't wait to go back for our anniversary, it SUCKED. So dark had to use phone to read menu, thought it was us looked around and three other tables were doing the same thing.food was just ok nothing to come back for. Service was awful when we went to find our server to get our check he apologized and said he was really busy, paid and left to an empty restaurant so not sure what he was busy doing but it wasn't service.
Great food and service with a pretty view of the lake. Would be better if you had an elevator in your restaurant so disabled people could get up the second floor more easily. We love that you have hormone free chicken and lamb. More organic items on the menu would be nice. We wish you would turn down the music and play more peaceful, relaxing music.
Great place to go if you want a scenic view of Lake Tahoe. We chose this place because they have hormone free chicken and lamb. What would make it even better is more organic and hormone free items, GMO-free and wild-caught fish (not farmed). We appreciate that they turned down the loud music when we asked, but it would be even better if they didn't play it so loud to begin with or if they played more relaxing music, which would add to the ambiance. The food was great and the service was very attentive.
We went for lunch and upon the hostess recommendation we chose to eat inside as the yellow jackets were horrible this time. We were seated right by the window and enjoyed the view without being bothered by the yellow jackets. My husband ordered the rueben sandwich and it came with wedge cut fries. He enjoyed it and would order it again. I ordered the Turkey/cranberry sandwich with brie and green apples. It was good and I like the whole grain toasted bread it was on. I would not order it again as it was just ok for me. There was nothing wrong with it, I just was not thrilled. Our waitress was pretty good except my husband had to ask three times to have his water refilled. I almost got up and went to find her to refill it when she appeared with the water pitcher and they were not very busy at that time (2pm). I would go back as it is a good restaurant with a great view of Lake Tahoe and eating outside is very enjoyable except when there is a huge yellow jacket problem.
