Jake's Del Mar Ratings and Reviews
Husband and I celebrated our 43rd wedding anniversary there. We were greeted with an anniversary card and received a free dessert to share at the end. All of the tables and booths have a close-up view of the ocean. They have 3 or 4 small dishes that pair well with salads for a light dinner. I chose a seafood stack with avocado, baby arugula and a slightly sweet sauce to go with a beet salad. Both were excellent. And plenty for me to eat. My husband loved his salad and the steak and shrimp dish that came with mashed potatoes + ?. I have a hearing problem, so the noise level bothered me. The bar was busy (Thursday evening) and there were a couple of groups near our end of the room having dinner. Still, we loved it!
The ocean view was a great backdrop to well-prepared food that came in just the right proportions. I had scallops that were just the right crispiness and were paired with a rich coconut risotto. Our waiter was attentive but did not hover. The atmosphere was relaxed, romantic and unhurried. Considering the overall experience, the price was excellent.
We love eating at Jake's Del Mar, but this time the food was not great. I asked for medium in my filet and it was really well done and highly over- seasoned. I didn't want to embarrass anyone so I ate part of it anyway. There were 3 people in our party with filet and all over cooked.
My friends ordered the scallops which they said were delicious but I ordered the chicken and was very disappointed. Lacked flavor - just was very plain, uninspired fried chicken.
But the service was friendly and professional. The view lovely. And my friends raved about their food so just don't order the chicken if you want to have a great meal.
Another birthday dinner at Jake's and it was great. Waited a few minutes for a table by the window - watched the sun set on the ocean. Service very good but I could have used more water! Our food was outstanding - it always is at Jake's. Great for lunch - you are relaxed by watching the waves.
We chose this restaurant and are so happy we did. Each entree was a work of art. We are trying to eat more healthfully and had dishes that fit perfectly with any diet. Everyone was very pleased with the food, the service, and the great view of the ocean. We each tried a different entree and they were all prepared to perfection. We will definitely return to this restaurant.
The mater d gave us a table right by the windows, as requested when reserved. We were celebrating our daughter's 25th birthday, and she loves marine mammals ... 3 humpback whales were playing just beyond the surfline for most of our meal ... what a treat!!!! It was serendipity .... like we were meant to be there at that very moment. The food was delicious, wait staff impecable, and natural ocean dinner show amazing! Thank you Jakes for the memorable experience!
My husband and I took our mothers and family to Jakes for dinner on Sunday. It was an amazingly special experience with the prime table near the inset window at sunset , and every bite of food was outstanding. I even coerced my in-laws to eat brussel sprouts after they said they didn't normally eat them! How can one resist that recipe?:) We had two servings! Everyone cleaned up their plates and still had dessert.
We live nearby and love to come for dinner and Happy Hours. We need to try it for brunch. Jakes has always and continues to be a class act, and the go- to restaurant for us when visitors are in town. The service was impeccable. Thanks for the memories and the very special day for our Mothers.
It's kind of a shame. With the ambiance (sitting right next to the beach) and good food, sharing a late afternoon dinner with my aunt for Mother's Day, one thing greatly detracted from the experience: the waiter. Or perhaps it was the lack of one. He showed up 2 minutes after we were seated to take the drink order but then never returned until 10 minutes after we received our food. I had to snag a passing waitress 40 minutes after being seated to place our order. The food took 25 minutes to prepare. That means our waiter wasn't paying attention to us for over an hour. That means others had to take care of his table.
Jakes is our favorite place to dine in the afternoons. We live in Rancho California CA and we go down to Jakes to get away from the heat in the summer and have dinner. We like to go to the Happy Hour for an early dinner.
We just went to Jakes for Mothers Day and it was absolutely wonderful. Just about everything was just perfect. The Orange juice was a little small, but everthing else was just fine.
We had to go to the Chart House for Valentines / Anniversity dinner since Jakes was booked and it was absolutely Awful. We learned to not go back there.
I love Jakes. My family has been going here since the mid 80's. I took my wife and mother there for Mother's Day. The menu was fixed, so much smaller than usual. Our server was great when he got there, but I had to ask two other people to please get our waiter, then the receptionist finally got us some coffee. If you haven't even had coffee, water, juice, it's bad. It's not something I would expect with a fixed menu, on this day. Not to mention.....waiters need to be highly aware when a table has a young child.Need to work on the professionalism of what it means to be a great waiter, and wait staff....and guess what....at a place like Jake's, your tip will directly reflect it.
We (my sons and I) treated my wife to a special dinner at Jake's. The food was great; the ambience was terrific (the sun was setting over the Pacific) and the Service was outstanding!! And, without a doubt, the Hula Pie Birthday dessert was the perfect cap to a perfect meal
We enjoyed our lunch at Jake's in Del Mar on Saturday 5/10/14. The restaurant is clean, up to date decorated and the service is top notch. Food is well presented and matched with quality. I had the beet salad, halibut and their Bailey's pot de creme for dessert and for starters the Chef's plate. Everything was great. I would love to go back again, but this time I would like to sit outdoors, since there is a gorgeous view of the ocean. Parking is xtremely pricey on the meters, it's one quarter for every 5 minutes, so I would recommend doing their valet parking, which comes out more reasonable.
Jakes has been a favorite for years but we moved away. Our experiences this time were just as memorable. We started with drinks and appetizers at the bar. Great service and food. Once seated we had a inspiring view, more drinks and delicious meal. We recommend valet parking because of the crowds and expense of parking across the street. Good service friendly and helpful staff.
We live on the east coast but we get to the San Diego area quite often. There are many great restaurants in the area but Jake's (30 minutes north of San Diego) is our favorite. The food is great but the people make this place number 1 in our book. We just celebrated our 20th anniversary at Jake's and they made it a priority to make it special from management, hostess and wait staff. I had the filet mignon, my wife had the halibut special and the food was phenomenal. They even gave us a free Hula Pie desert for our anniversary (best desert ever)!!!
My wife and I heard about this restaurant by word of mouth while on vacation. As we have done for quite some time we take the word of locals when traveling. We went in totally blind and had a wonderful meal and experience. We are from Louisiana and are true seafood junkies. Jake's Del Mar was a welcome hit. Can't wait to pass it on to someone else.
