The place doesn't exist anymore
You need to get your act together. This place has been closed for months but you still took the reservation and confirmed it.
My review isn't accurate because we never dined at Jack's. Couldn't figure out how to just write a review...
Unfortunately we had booked a table here last Wednesday night and showed up only to find out the restaurant was closed. Jacks didn't inform Open Table they were closed and I had our in laws in town for the holiday.
Thank goodness for neighboring restaurant Bocanova who took care us and we had a great meal. Bonus as it was half price on wine that night!!
Thank you Open Table for booking a reservation, sending a confirmation and reminder, to a restaurant that was closed for the entire Thanksgiving week. It would have been quite helpful to know this prior to making the reservation and then finding upon arrival that they were closed.
Food is good. I enjoyed the clam chowder and Caesar salad with fried oyster "croutons". The service was, however, inexcusably poor, especially since there weren't a lot of customers for Friday lunch. Server asked if I wanted pepper for my soup but by the time she came back with the grinder I had already enjoyed about a third of the bowl. The server should have the grinder in hand when this question is asked! My dining companion had ordered apple pie, which was listed as dessert on special lunch menu. The server brought carrot cake and when told this was incorrect she finally returned and reported that there was no apple pie. Why didn't the server who took our orders know this and mention it?
Excellent service, very knowledgeable about all aspects of the menu. Food was delicious too.
Did not end of eating here. Waitress made our party feel uncomfortable. Snatched the coffee drink out of my boyfriend's hand and threw away.
Where do I start? Wait staff seemed to be bothered that they had to show up to work. Slow service, had to repeatedly ask for different things. Dessert (soft serve) took 15 min to come out melted. Food was good not outstanding. Uncomfortable chairs... Just a restaurant that felt very thrown together, which was disappointing due to $230 bill.
Also restaurant does not allow customers to leave their own tips for staff, instead automatically adding 20% to bill total, this staff was more deserving of maybe 10-12% at most. We will not be back to Jacks, should have known better when we saw very few customers on a Friday night.
We celebrated our 15 year anniversary here last week.
The Young Cuban drink is amazing.
The soups were yummy.
The risotto and salmon cooked perfectly.
The only negative was the website and menu both say there is a special on oysters on Wednesdays (we were there on Wednesday) which apparently is no longer offered. Maybe update both website and menu.
I would recommend this place.
Awesome evening before event at Oracle Arena. Food was delicious and wines too, thanks to recommendations from Aiden! We're going back!!!
Really nice first experience...they took my note about us wanting a table that stands alone to heart so that was helpful.... awesome waitress
Went here for my monthly family dinner. All the food that we ordered we enjoyed -- I want to make the clear. Oysters were tasty, octopus was unique in large size which was a pleasant surprise, tasty as well. Drinks were OK.
But we found it hard not to feel like it was overpriced. The drinks, although they tasted fine, were not on par with other similar restaurants in this price range.
We also felt very deceived by the "surf and turf." The seafood was served tempura style, which was listed, and although not expected in a surf and turf, is fine... But the steak, upon asking for the cut, was a flat iron. This wasn't listed, and the cheapness of the cut felt like it should certainly be noted to customers.
The service was also slow in bringing drinks, and our server had to return to the kitchen to get answers to numerous questions (simple ones like, "What is the fish of the day?" etc.) Spoons were not brought for the chowder, etc. It's the little things.
It was a fine experience, but I would not return.
A great addition to Jack London Square!
Met friends for after work drinks and dinner. The service and ambiance of the Jack London Square district a few hours before sunset was relaxing and appreciated by all in our party. Food and drink choices were equally satisfying. Definitely a great restaurant to visit again!
Loved the octopus. Service could have been more attentive. Stingy with bread (which you have to ask for.) Attractive décor, ambiance. View of the water.
Our first trip to Oakland, and Jack's was recommended by our son,who lives down the street from the restaurant. The food was fabulous, the atmosphere warm and welcoming, and the wait staff is terrific.
Another great venue @ Jack London Square...everything was GREAT - the clam chowder had great balance and flavor, great portion of clams too per serving. Fish and chips were expertly done, excellent taste, not greasy at all and the 'chips' were fantastic. Cioppino was delicious and the amount of fish was amazing...lastly the burger was super good. I was the only non fish order in the group, and the burger did not disappoint. Great happy hour...great service...and great food.
Sat on the patio with a group of 6 and had a family of four (two adults two young children) seated at the end (it was a table for 8). Our server spent most of her time with her arms crossed (not very friendly) and the restaurant had run out of many things that we were hoping to order. We ended up with a couple lobster rolls, some oysters, a burger with fries and cioppino. The lobster rolls are NOT worth the $25. Very boring and small. The cioppino was tasty, the burger was "meh." It was tough to swallow the $260 bill for 6 people that included a mandatory 20% tip for our unfriendly wait-person. And that we had to dine with children that were not ours. Nothing worth going back for, unfortunately.
Not a bad spot, but the food was incredibly over-salted. I like my salt quite a bit, so if I tell you the food was salty, it's hella salty. The restaurant is also tipless, and the service reflected it. Not terrible by any means, but not worth a repeat visit, either.
Limited menu. The oysters are very good but the fish and chips were a little disappointing, the chowder just ok
Wow. I haven't had service this poor & indifferent in a while. Our waiter disappeared for long periods of time and when we waved him down he'd act annoyed and tell us he was 'just about' to come to us anyway. And the more we tried to be friendly, the worse it seemed to get. Obviously a bad day!
I also found the menus strangely confusing ('drinks' on the back of the food menu, but the 'wine list' on the back of the oyster menu) and when we pointed at the 'Bucket of 2 Dozen Oysters' on the front of the menu but then discussed oyster varieties with the waiter, he neglected to inform us (and granted we didn't read/notice) that the 2 Dozen price was ONLY for the Drake's Bay oysters. So when the bill arrived, we'd spent more than we'd thought. Partially our mistake, but... Ugh.
My last (I promise!) issue is the lack of description or explanation of the provenance of the fish they serve. The menu claims they're 'sustainable,' yet there is swordfish on it (really???) AND Ahi tuna, both severely overfished and unsustainable fisheries around most of the world.....
The four of us spent 2 1/2 hours having a most wonderful dinner. The fresh oysters were out of this world. We ate four dozen. The waitstaff was knowledgeable and helpful. We especially enjoyed our drinks. Look forward to going back.
Great location, with a waterfront view. We chose to sit outside on the patio and enjoy the perfect day. Our primary goal was to come here for Oysters...which we accomplished! We had 3 dozed when we were done!
We found the rest of the food here to be absolutely amazing! To start we ordered a couple of drinks:
- Bloody Mary - The Bloody Mary was brilliant! Great mix, tasted like it was made from scratch, not one of those commercial blends. Couldn't ask for a better start.
- Sangria was OK, nothing stood out about it, but definitely drinkable. Red wine based.
Then the Oysters and the food...
- Oysters - They were out of the East Coast variety, but they had all the rest. While they were very good, it does get a bit challenging to keep track of what was what.
- Drake's Bay - The only variety that has a bucket price (Slightly cheaper than buying them individually)
- Shrimp Ceviche - Excellent! So much flavor! Nice juicy pieces of Shrimp and ripe pieces of Avocado. I wish we had some bread to soak up the sauce/juice from the Ceviche!
- Charred Octopus - YUM! it looks a bit intimidating...not quite a baby octopus...so I didn't know what to expect. I thought it might be a bit chewy and tough...sooo glad I was wrong! So tender, soft and the great flavor. Excellent!
- Cioppino - Brilliant! One of the best I had...well I haven't had a whole lot of Cioppino. (Disclaimer) But I imagine this would definitely be in the top 5. Our serve was also kind enough to split it in two...its a good size dish.
A lot of other reviews complain about the service, but enjoyed the food. Can't say we had such an experience. Our waitress Danielle was brilliant, she frequently checked up on us, explained everything and was attentive without being overbearing. Danielle even took the liberty to split the Cioppino into two smaller bowls for us.
The only reason I'm not giving this place 5 Stars is because they ran out of a couple of variety of Oysters. Just nitpicking...
The waiter didn't write down our order - he said, he'll remember everything. Well, he didn't. I ordered one of the appetizers and specifically said I would like it as my meal and it came out with the rest of our appetizers. When my husband's meal came, I sat there watching him eat. Then I felt compelled to order another dish, only for it to take forever to come. I also felt rushed in the beginning when ordering my meal and I couldn't decide (hence ordering an appetizer as my main meal). We were celebrating my birthday and this overall experience was disappointing. Food was good, not excellent and I'm not fond of 20% already being added to my bill. I'd like to add at my own discretion based on service. We had to keep asking for water (which I understand since we're in a drought) but we basically had to stop eating when there wasn't any water on the table. The drinks were also poorly made. I ordered a Moscow Mule and it was more like a spiked lemonade and my husband's Manhattan was just ok (and SMALL) for the price. We won't be coming back here again...
Great fat fresh oysters. Service were spotty though. Initially we were being taken care of but when there's more customers we were literally forgotten. Had to ask for water 3 times and can't find Anyone for our check. It would have been fine if we gave 15% but they automatically added a 20% tip where the services were not warranted.
Excellent food all around. Oysters were great, of course. The bill added up surprisingly fast, but you definitely taste where the money went. Very good presentation and the service staff was all over it. Not for the financially squeamish, though.
Great service. Food was excellent for a child and a gluten free adult. Great corn muffins.
We thoroughly enjoyed the cioppino - absolutely delicious. The oysters were just "okay". Great service from Alex. Menu somewhat pricey but the food is really good.
Great seafood restaurant in a picturesque location.
The oysters are were very good and the cocktails were fantastic! My boyfriend got the steak with lobster tempura which I didn't think was a great value for the money. He said the steak was perfect, however the single small deep fried chunk of lobster left much to be desired. My ciopinno, on the other hand, was exactly what I expected- delicious.
Food is so-so, menu is overpriced. Quality has really gone down since earlier visits.
Service was worst part...couldn't careless attitude (but with a guaranteed 20% gratuity!!!!!!)
Won't be going back anytime soon.
Enjoy the food and the good service very much. However, we felt the menu is a little pricy, even with the Groupon coupon ($88 for $140). We also felt that the fixed 20% gratuity is also high.
We had a wonderful birthday lunch at Jack's that was 5 star in every way. We made a reservation even though we had read several negative reviews. We were not sorry. From the moment we arrived, we were taken care of, made to feel welcome and our service from Danielle was friendly and attentive and she makes a mean mojito. We ordered 3 out of 4 choices of cooked oysters and each was delectable with very fresh oysters and delicious flavors of Rockefellers, Sirachas and Casinos. A wonderful spring salad was artfully put together with fennel, favas beans, arugula and a light and lovely buttermilk dressing. Refreshing. The "star"on the menu mentioned by many reviewers was the grilled octopus. One of the best preparations ever! So tender was this generous portion grilled and served with a sauté of mixed vegetables that included sweet red peppers, onions and potatoes. The dish was toothsome and made us feel like licking the plate. If you like octopus, this is the place! The community tables outside are a great place to people watch and enjoy Jack London Square.
We will definitely return the next time we visit. Jack's Delivers!
This restaurant clearly chooses staff biased towards tattoos and nose rings, which is their right. But a server wearing a nose ring and a nose-ringed receptionist make a lasting impression. I kept wondering if something might drop in my food! A most unpleasant experience at a wonderful location with unexceptional food at high prices.
Overpriced, no parking (Valet only $15.00) mandatory 20% surcharge on bill. Management need to re-evaluate this policy.
Service was a little blunt and brusque. I'm guessing because tip is now included int he bill, the staff feels no need to be friendly or warm. But we never waited for anything.
Loved their menu and preparation before a recent chef/menu change.
Some of their best dishes (fried olives) are gone and others fall flat (crispy Brussels sprouts are now soggy). Hope it improves.
Bring back the olives!
This place has gone downhill. I'm bummed. The first time we went we were chatting with one of the Managers and he sent us a cold appetizer dish as a freebie-- I think it was during football season and I was going on some tirade off on how ugly Andy Dalton was.
We've had great service with Alex as our server. The host/hostess are usually very nice and friendly.
However lately the food quality/quantity has gone down. The octupus used to be served with the tenacles and part of the head. Overall food volume has gone down as well. The crudo, the lobster roll(the protein inside), all seem smaller portions and flavor wise-- the food is okay but it just is not as good as I remembered.
It took me twice to get bread the last time.
The raw oysters are great. I'm not a fan of cooked oysters (those were way too salty for me with the way they seasoned- but I'm sure other people may like it).
We enjoyed eating outside with a view of the boats. When the wind picked up in the evening they turning on the heat lamps and it was perfect. The oysters were great as well as the cioppino. They divided up the cioppino for us as we were splitting it.
The place is missing WiFi. There is no reception inside the restaurant.
