About
A Noble American Tradition
Jack the Horse (JTH) is the restaurant that everyone would like in their neighborhood. The bar is friendly and inviting, and the bartenders will mix you your favorite cocktail or one of their own creations. The restaurant itself is also inviting, a lovely place to visit, especially on a cold NYC night. But best of all is the food, which is both creative and expertly cooked (do yourself a favor and try the shrimp risotto). When JTH is on their game, you won't get a better dining experience anywhere else. Lucky us, to have it in Brooklyn.
My GF & I went after a hard day at work and had a tremendous time. The cocktails are incredible. Portion sizes leave you full, not overstuffed.
Went here for the first time with friends from France. I loved it! Cozy, warm ambiance, great food and service. The staff was VERY attentive and friendly. I will be back! Special touch: ordered an Uber to return to Manhattan after dinner...it was a freezing cold night. One of the hosts made sure we were welcome to stay inside to stay warm as we waited for the car. Thanks!
Perfect as always. The menu, the food, the staff, the drinks, the atmosphere - all consistently well done.
Usually our go to brunch spot, we visited for the prix fixe New Year’s Eve dinner. Creative cuisine, excellent service and pleasant atmosphere.
I am a regular diner at Jack the Horse Tavern and I have to say that this past Saturday evening (12-30-2017) I had a particularly enjoyable dinner and cocktails. I had dishes I have had previously, but the appetizer (beet salad) main course (short ribs) and even the cheese plate for dessert, were notably excellent. Staff is always professional; the owner was gracious and inquired about my meal. There were a few children - a necessary evil, I suppose; after all, this is Brownstone Brooklyn - scattered about in the dining area but even they could not annoy me this time. All in all, a pleasant experience and I can certainly recommend Jack the Horse Tavern.
The food was varied in scope and delicious and the service was very good.
Perfect! Atmosphere, food, waitstaff all perfect.
Always a perfect neighborhood spot, nothing fancy, just consistently solid w/ good service and well prepared food and delightful/quiet spot.
While limited, the food is consistently good. Unfortunately, the service borders on fair. Wait staff needs to be better trained. Bar needs a wider variety of options.
With that being said, for a local restaurant, I do go on occasion. Not a place I would opt to travel to.
One of my favorote neighborhood gems
We had a lovely birthday dinner at Jack the Horse, the oyster room next door is also quite nice
I was a bit disappointed - we ordered mussels and chicken and both were just ok. Wine was pricey. We were over from Ireland visiting for a few days and read reviews raving about this place - we couldn't honestly see what the fuss was about. Food ok, range of menu ok, wine ok - but all just ok. Disappointing...
There are tons of restaurants in the Brooklyn Heights area, many of which are very good, but Jack the Horse Tavern has always been my favorite. With it's diverse menu of always-excellent food, friendly service, simple-but-attractive décor, and the ability to actually be able to HEAR the person you're dining with, it's always my first choice in the neighborhood.
I used to come to here a lot and realized after this evening why i stopped coming. I made reservations for 4 but at the last minute we became 5. The hostess sat us at a corner table on the banquette. It’s was an awkward arrangement and I asked if we could have 3 tables adjacent to each other. After a few moments the hostess squeezed us into 2 tables because the other 3 open tables were for reservations. Those tables sat empty the entire time we were at the restaurant.
My roasted vegetable salad was shaved root vegetables on top of undressed greens and the rice that accompanied the salmon was swimming in butter.
Meh. Food was slightly above average, but the menu was a little boring and it was too loud to hear my friend from across the table. The glass of wine I ordered was spoiled and I had to request another one, and only then did the server make suggestions or offer to let me sample it first. The service was very slow - I had to ask for everything, even for a dessert menu and the check, and nobody checked on us at all. The apple dessert was pretty good. Overall, it’s a decent dining option if you’re in the neighborhood and don’t want to walk too far or make any decisions, but other than convenience and a well cooked meal, it’s not really worth the price. There are better options nearby with a more interesting menu.
Food is delicious and cocktails even better. Love sitting at the bar or in a corner table in the back. Hostess can use some training.
We really enjoyed our dinner here. The good and service were very good and we liked the ambiance.
Step above everyday
Never disappointed. And totally addicted to the trout salad. I almost wish they would take it off the menu so I would have to order something else...
Friendly small neighborhood restaurant with excellent food...amiable, knowledgeable service. Only drawback is the noise.
Friendly Employees.
Good Food.
Very Cozy Restaurant
Center of Brooklyn Hights
Problem was service. Server was good, but not enough servers, so we had to wait too long!
Multiple visits. Good neighborhood option. Solid recurring menu plus specials. Good service.
Super Expensive, Super Expensive,Super Expensive,Super Expensive,
Everything was fine. The waiter was nice. The food was fine. Was surprised that they closed the kitchen at 9 p.m. on a Sunday, but maybe that is a seasonal thing.
Dined there Saturday evening, August 5th. Excellent, friendly service, fabulous cocktails, and delicious food. Always a pleasant dining experience. Unfortunately, they are "Kid-friendly," but a later evening reservation took care of that problem: not a child to be seen.
The bartender seemed like he was strung out and drunk. At first told us we could not get oysters at the bar then later asked if we would like to order some. There are too many other strange things he did to mention in this review. Our server was was great but had too many tables and the place was not that busy for a Saturday eve. Two of our dishes were barely warm but was flavorful
The service was strange. One of our entrees was inedible. We have eaten here many times , and will most likely not return.
Great spot to grab a few drinks and light bites at the bar, or enjoy a meal at a table. Very friendly staff. The octopus, brussel sprouts and beet salad were excellent. Very close to the Brooklyn Promenade so it's convenient for taking a nice stroll afterwards.
Good American food. Good choices for 2 adults plus a grandson who only eats hamburgers and a vegetarian granddaughter. Attentive service. Delicious desserts.
We have dined at Jack The Horse many many times. The food has always been excellent and they have a nice wine and drink selection. Several of their wait staff have been there for a few years. On my most recent dining experience which was July 9, the service we received was not up to their usual standard. Will take a break from dining there.
I went with my boyfriend the evening before he had to leave the city for a couple of weeks and we had a delicious, romantic, hugely enjoyable evening. we had happy hour oysters and cocktails at their oyster bar next door, then headed to the restaurant for a big bowl of mussels and a smoked trout salad.
In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I went back for brunch the next day with a group of my friends. The eggs orleans were so good they actually made my friend cry.
All the food is delicious, the cocktails are amazing, the waitstaff are friendly and fun, I honestly couldn't think of a single thing I'd improve.
ok enjoyed everything but surprised that the small bottle of diet coke (6 or maybe 8 oz) was $4.00 and withe tax and tip almost another dollar!
Sunday brunch has been excellent, but this 7/3 Monaday night dinner was very disappointing. We had to just about plead for more bread (4 small, thin slices for 3 of us), one salt shaker for entire restaurant, noisy with loud tasteless "music," my medium steak came blood red, but the waiter was reluctant to remedy insisting it was medium; had to repeat 3 times that I could not eat it that way! Expensive and not worth it. We will return, but for Sunday brunch.
Love having this restaurant so close to where we live. Enjoyed our meal, glad mussels are back on the menu but pity they're not served with French fries anymore!
They weren't quite as delicious as they used to be a few years ago! Wine was delicious.
Wonderful dining experience. Best kept secret spot in heart of Brooklyn Heights. Hostess needs to smile a bit more - no enthusiasm!
Interesting menu and great mussels! A good restaurant with a nice, neighborhood feel to it.
Great, secluded neighborhood gem. Creative, locally sourced cuisine served professionally with friendly ambience. Well-stocked bar and a reasonable wine list. Jack the Horse is one of the reason people love Brooklyn!
Great find in a neighborhood in walking distance from the Brooklyn Bridge Park. The food was tasty, the service was terrific. I will definitely come back!
