Jack & Giulio's Italian Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Great northern Italian restaurant, chef Giulio originally from Piacenza. Scampi to die for, especially the scampi Giulio, but also love the pesto scampi. Also great job on many of the classics, including veal or chicken piccata/marsala, lasagna, eggplant or veal parmesan, homemade pastas (e.g., tortellini Piacentina or tortelloni verdi). Heart of palm salad excellent, with avos and a pesto dressing. Great Italian wine options, including hard-to-find wines from Piacenza region (try the Romeo, a blend of barbera and croatina grapes).
Three of our four orders were served together, hot and delicious, the 4th was served nearly 10 minutes later and not hot. Our waiter disappeared for awhile so I had to wait to ask them to "nuke" my order as it was not hot. It was brought back hot however there was no dialog as to the temperature or why I had made the request. I ordered the eggplant and veal dish which I was told by the waiter was a good choice, based upon what I was served, I disagree.
3 out of 4 good meals is not bad, however bread was not served with our meals and had to be ordered ala cart as were the salads. I might be willing to try them again.
We had a bad experience. We ordered antipasto which was basic but fine. My husband ordered veal which was fine and I ordered a classic pasta with fresh tomatoes, basil, garlic and olive oil. My pasta came with a heavy tomato sauce. When I asked the waiter about it he said "I have been telling him (?the owner) to change it on the menu"! Then they gave us a handwritten check for $158 which seemed a lot based on what we had ordered. We checked the math and they were trying to overcharge us. When we asked the waiter to check it he came back with a computer generated bill for $101. He didn't apologize or offer any explanation. If you go there check the bill to make sure you are not overcharged!
Had a lovely dinner party for my mom, sister and husband's birthdays. Jose and the entire staff were wonderful in helping us plan the event and serve our specialty cakes. Great food and excellent ambiance. An uncrowded gem in San Diego's Old Town with a lovely outdoor patio and full bar.
This is a great restaurant for any occasion. There are great selections on the menu and over the years I or my guests have tried everything and the food is always delicious. Staff are friendly and service always top notch.
I have been a regular customer for approximately 40 years dating back to when my father would bring me to Jack & Giulio's as a child. I am continuing the tradion now woth my children. Ilove this restaurant; always quality food, good ambiance and Jack & Giulio are good people! I
As always, Jack & Giulio's was excellent. On this particular evening we visited Jack & Giulio's to enjoy the live music. And did we ever enjoy it! It was wonderful and very entertaining. The meal was great, the service wonderful and the atmosphere fantastic. My wife and I have dined at Jack & Giulio's numerous times and have never been disappointed. Great local Italian restaurant.
Annabelle says: What a delicious paella chock full of shellfish! and at such a reasonable price. I was there with my 10 year old grandson who was treated appropriately with friendly service. The zabaglione with perfectly sweet strawberries had an a amazing cinnamon touch. Fantastic place. Must be visited each San Diego trip.
Once again, I have been going to this great place for about 47 years. Originally in Pacific Beach area of San Diego, but now in historical Old Town. Excellant italian food. Occassional live music with singing by the owner ( and he is good!)
I live 120 miles away, but will make the trip just for dinner. It is that good !
A friend visiting from Hawaii is Italian. She mentioned there is no decent Italian food in the islands. My son suggested J&G and since he is performing nearby at the Cygnet Theatre he was able to join us for dinner. The whole meal was a hit. Best piccata sauce I have ever tasted!
Friends visiting who had lived in SD wondered if it was still in business. They had great memories of the shrimp. Sure enough, it is and now they have patio dining. We had a nice early dinner on the patio. Delicious salads, fresh made pasta and scrumptious shrimp & mushroom entrees
This was without a doubt the worst experience eating out I have ever had. The restaurant was out of soup and bread. But that's just the beginning. After waiting 45 minutes for our dinner my wife was told they were out of the food she had ordered. It was the house specialty scampi. To make matters worst they tried to serve my daughter and me our pasta while not even offering my wife an option. Yes...they expected two of to eat and my wife watch.
Other than that it was a cute place but needed a coat of paint and a broom. Pride left this tired restaurant years ago.
My husband and I enjoyed a beautiful SCAMPI a LA GIULIO. We had not been to the restaurant in over 30 years as we had moved and GIULIOS had closed their old Pacific Beach location. Friends advised they were now in OldTown. Our 1st opportunity allowed this visit, Sunday 7/16/17. We were delighted to find Giulio still cooking and the Scampi was exactly as we remembered. FANTASTICO! Can't wait to retun.
Really loved this restaurant! We had a delicious, beautiful, quiet meal with great service. What more can you want? Highly recommend. We are out of town guests and relied on Open Table to guide us. We were not disappointed and when we come back we will visit Jack and Giulio's again.
We were visiting our daughter and her boyfriend in San Diego, decided on short notice to go for an Italian dinner, wanted something moderately priced and highly rated. Jack & Giulio's in Old Town was available, nice table, great service and a menu full of Italian standards. We were very satisfied with our meals and overall service, I think anyone giving them a try will not be disappointed.
Pretty good service; not excellent. Wine was good. Food just okay. Bruchetta was on large slices of bread from a loaf of Italian bread ... tasted good but visually disappointing. Lasagna had no ricotta cheese ... a big disappointment. Expensive. Not a good value. Sorry but will not be back.
Our waiter seemed rather put off that we didn't order drinks but that might just be his manner. I had the Angel Hair pasta and it was very good but it seems like when you are in Old Town San Diego you should probably be eating Mexican. If you are burned out on Mexican food then this is a great alternative.
Four of us enjoyed dinner at jack & guilios on a Sunday evening. Sergio was a wonderful server who made great suggestions. Dishes are customized to our taste. We were able to substitute veggies for other sides. Fabulous red sauce. My shrimp scampi alla guilios was absolutely delicious. I would return over & over just for that dish. My husband's veal parmigiana not so much. The meat itself was not tender or very tasty. Our other companions enjoyed their ricotta filled tortellini with spinach & white sauce.
Pretty restaurant with lovely outdoor seating. Inside are the white table cloth tables and pretty bar. Service was excellent but the food was sub par. The capresse salad should had vine ripen tasty tomatoes whereas they were the quality of a mainstream supermarket. We paid extra for garlic bread which was tasty but stingy on the amount of bread. I had the veal marsala while it looked delicious, it was not. The Marsala wine sauce lacked fullness and taste. I thought the veal scallopini was a bit strange that it looked like processed meat and did not even taste like veal. I would avoid the veal dishes because of this. My partner had the homemade pasta ravioli where the pasta tasted a bit pasty. The Alfredo's sauce was okay but nothing to swoon over or to waste calories on. I had a side of spaghetti with bolognese sauce which was the best part of my meal. I had a glass of Pinot Grigio which was good. I would not go back.
