About J. Paul's - Georgetown
J. Paul’s is Washington’s quintessential turn of the century American Dining Saloon. The J. Paul’s bar in Georgetown is itself a 100 year old mahogany shotgun bar, built by the Brunswick Balke Coolander Company and was previously housed in a grand saloon in the Chicago stockyards. Many will swear over their scotch that Al Capone himself bellied up to that very bar. Antique brass elevator doors from New York’s Waldorf Astoria frame the back dining room.
A few short blocks from the Potomac River, in the heart of fashionable Georgetown, the original J. Paul’s has become an institution. Every day, politicians, journalists, artists, business people and Washington personalities share tables with students, tourists and ex-Pats in the nation’s capital. Don't miss out on a visit to this DC institution!

J. Paul's - Georgetown Ratings and Reviews
Food was fine; no complaints. Service was very good for a party of 10. Friendly staff. Seafood pasta was pretty good...would have been nice to have more "seafood". Shrimp and mussels only...could expand to include scallops and clams.
We use to be regulars here, but I was quickly reminded why we stopped. First, the service was horrendous. (10 minutes to be greeted, another 15 minutes to get drinks, appetizer was wrong), and on a freezing cold evening they didn’t have the heater on. Every person on the restaurant had their winter coat on during their meal! Even the wait staff had on coats or sweaters. With all the problems, no one made an effort to recifty or make the situation better. Then, when paying, they screwed up the credit card, charging the incorrect amount, which caused more problems. Sad to see such a staple restaurant to take such a nosedive.
We went for brunch on New Year's Day, 2017. That was a very cold day in Washington DC, and the restaurant was freezing ... nearly all the diners had to keep their coats on during their meals. More disappointing, it took nearly an hour from the time we ordered until our entrees arrived ... and we weren't the only diners who had that experience. Clearly the restaurant was unprepared ... for either the weather or the number of guests they elected to serve. Incredibly unpleasant experience.
We went in for a quick lunch on Christmas Day. We sat in the bar area and the two servers we had were great. Both were professional and worked well together. We left wanting to come back for a dinner service where we could really enjoy the food and the atmosphere. See you soon!
Nothing went right. We had a reservation on open table and were told when we arrived there would be an hour wait. I had to be insistent and only then did they find a table. Then it took 40 minutes to get water and a Diet Coke. Except the Diet Coke turned out to be Dr Pepper. They kept bringing out Diet Coke which was Dr Pepper until I finally just stuck with the water. One of our party did not get her food until we were all done eating and our plates had been cleared. One other received his food 19 minutes before our plates were cleared. On top of it, the burgers were extremely greasy. There is almost nothing good I can say about this experience. Never ever again.
Our experience started out a little rocky as our table for 12 wasn't ready when we arrived and we were told we'd have to wait for the large table to clear. However they turned our experience around by moving us to an upstairs private room which was great for our large party and our server was fantastic. Everyone enjoyed the food and service therefore our birthday celebration was a success!
