About J. Paul's - Georgetown
J. Paul’s is Washington’s quintessential turn of the century American Dining Saloon. The J. Paul’s bar in Georgetown is itself a 100 year old mahogany shotgun bar, built by the Brunswick Balke Coolander Company and was previously housed in a grand saloon in the Chicago stockyards. Many will swear over their scotch that Al Capone himself bellied up to that very bar. Antique brass elevator doors from New York’s Waldorf Astoria frame the back dining room.
A few short blocks from the Potomac River, in the heart of fashionable Georgetown, the original J. Paul’s has become an institution. Every day, politicians, journalists, artists, business people and Washington personalities share tables with students, tourists and ex-Pats in the nation’s capital. Don't miss out on a visit to this DC institution!

J. Paul's - Georgetown Ratings and Reviews
Our experience started out a little rocky as our table for 12 wasn't ready when we arrived and we were told we'd have to wait for the large table to clear. However they turned our experience around by moving us to an upstairs private room which was great for our large party and our server was fantastic. Everyone enjoyed the food and service therefore our birthday celebration was a success!
Was a last minute choice no reservations on a Saturday night... we were pleasantly surprised. Food was moderately priced in a expensive area. Cocktails were delicious and served very quickly. We only had burgers but also some delicious appetizers... oysters were very yummy!!!
Really cool area with lots of shopping, we had a window seat so great place to people watch. Also a really cool venue-- it's an antique house so very unique ambiance. Great place for tourists in DC looking to experience the Georgetown area. The service was also great. We were seated right away and the server was very attentive. The staff also seemed to get along well and were having fun, which is important to me-- I always like to see good management and a nice work environment! I had the fried green tomato burger which was PHENOMENAL and the fries were also really good. Would definitely go back!
Food was good, but service was just OK. I have always liked J Pauls and will keep going there.
They were coming out with a new menu, but didn't tell us some items on the current menu were no longer available until we tried to order. Would have been nice to know up front.
Arrived after 11 so I was a bit disappointed that we could only order from a limited menu AND dessert wasn't available (although the menu stated its availability as anytime). The food was good. Place was empty. It was a bar. Nothing spectacular. Would eat there again though.
It was my 5 or 6 visit and I was not very impressed this time. No music was playing, the crab dip was absurdly small and we ordered 4 burgers and even though we ordered medium rare every burger arrived well done. On a positive note our server was very pleasant and my bloody marry was delicious.
Our experience was awful. Saturday night.
Terrible service. Forgot our wine that we ordered. Asked for bourbon options ... and he named a few and then said I can't think of the rest what would you like? I asked him o get the rest of options and he named the same short list bc he was too disinterested in finding out the that the other options were. Lame staff. Lame everything. Highly do not recommend.
The food was good, but the service was horrible. They brought our food to the table and before we could even pick up the silverware, they took it back saying that it was supposed to be for another table. We got no apologies for this and our waitress was unprofessional in greeting us and in taking our order. Not worth it.
We had a group of ten and J Pauls accommodated the reservation through Open Table when no one else would, it seemed. They had plenty of space and good service. They could have used another server or two to keep our drinks fresh but overall we were very happy. I've been before and will certainly go back.
This didn't go well, starting with the rude front of door. Our waiter was over friendly and rather odd. We waited 30 mins to order after which the food came very quickly but was tepid and at best average. We couldn't wait to leave. We were very disappointed.
