I found this restaurant a tremendous disappointment. Purportedly voted the “best steakhouse in Central Vermont,” I cannot help but feel very sorry for the people of Central Vermont. The garlic bread is a saturated, oily mess sprinkled with some type of indiscernible cheese-product sprinkled on top, and the wedge salad (which I had thought was a virtual impossibility to ruin) was presented with tasteless blue cheese crumbles and a tasteless buttermilk dressing. The two 7 oz filet mignons for me and my guest were both over cooked. The garlic mashed potatoes tasted as though they had been prepared five hours earlier. All in all, an awful meal. Avoid if at all possible.
Unfortunately, we were unimpressed with the food. The $8, small cup, of French onion soup was good however, it was barely luke warm. The salad special was all romaine and very little chicken or gorgonzola or anything else. I bet there was a whole head of romaine in the salad - not kidding at all! The balsamic vinegar dressing was extremely oily. We asked for a little more gorgonzola and were charged an extra $2 each. Now, if the salads had a reasonable amount of cheese, I would fully expect to pay more to get more however, this wasn't the case at all. We had to dig through all the greens to find the chicken or cheese. After much discussion and very little empathy, the manager did finally offer to comp one of the salads. For the price and quality of food we had, I wouldn't recommend. It's very unlikely we'll return.
Our server was helpful and to the point, and then was enigmatic and a hoot to finish! House salad is classier than most and tasty. Ribs were outstanding, fish of the day could have used a little more flavor but quality was terrific. Dessert should be shared among four; inspired comfort food and the size of half a cake pan. Scotch list is primo.
We were there for lunch the Food was excellent make sure you try the chips with the cheese app. To die for! On this day the staff seemed out of sorts or were understaffed. We arrived on time for our reservation but ended up waiting for 15-20 to be seated . Something was definitely amiss this day. We will return in spite of the confusion as the food was good.
Very loud. Service terrible. Left dirty plates on the table and had to ask to have the water glasses refilled. Had to chase the server down for everything. Worst service I've ever had at a restaurant ever. Food was very good but leaving the dirty dishes on the table well beyond when we were finished was very annoying
We always visit JMorgans when we are in Vermont on vacation each year. This year was no different and we would like to say that our server Amber T was amazing...we were lucky enough to have her on the several occasions we dropped in (a steak dinner, appetizers after the movie, cake and drinks on the patio one afternoon) and she was always wonderful. Her personality and service made our visits there even more enjoyable.
We came from Montreal for a week of vacation and reserve by internet our table for my husband' birhday at J Morgan's steakhouse and it was a very warn night and we ask for a table outside and it was very nice. The food was good and our waitrees Amber was very attentionate. If we go back to Montpellier we will surely go back there
This was our second visit to this restaurant this summer. Our service was excellent amd my meal was delicious! I especially like the signature salad. I ordered the strip steak which was cooked medium with a pink center and cooked perfectly. I also had the garlic smashed potatoes which is always a nice compliment to the streak. I would recommend dining in this restaurant if you are in the Montpelier area.
The food is always excellent; they have good drink specials, and the service was fine. It is always a bit noisy and for a nice restaurant, it annoys me that they start to clean up (vacuum, etc.) while there are still customers in the place, but I will go back anyway. It is basically the fanciest place in town.
I cannot recommend. Food was OK. Heavy handed with the salt. Noise level was deafening. Not from screaming children or diners, just loud noise. Could not carry on a conversation. Overpriced. They need to institute a dress code. I was embarrassed to be with business associates. We dressed casual but were unprepared for baseball caps, bare feet, stained/dirty jean cutoffs, sleeves sweatshirts. Not a pleasant experience.
As usual the food was great.

We enjoyed both dishes
Good value for the rather pricy options, as my dining companions concurred vis-a-vis their dry-aged steaks, though we all agreed that the sodium level seemed over the top for most items, with the house salad unnecessarily salty due to a too-liberal garnish of olives; the Fred's style calamari suffered from the same misguided enthusiam for salt. Ditto the garlic bread; the dredging with Parmesan was overkill. My gin martini was dry, as requested, but not cold enough, and skimpy, with a full half-inch of glass showing, and no dividend. 😥 My companions enjoyed their beverages. As for my entree: the pesto pasta had little to no discernible pesto flavor, and too much/ too oily sauce, but the scallops were succulent and delightful. Did not have dessert, but on previous occasions I have enjoyed several sweet options. My companions were completely happy with their entrees. The service was exemplary (thank you, Trevor) and we were seated and served promptly despite a crowded dining room. I have no trouble recommending J. Morgan's Steak House, with a high-sodium warning!
