Always have a great meal at J. Morgan’s. The Vermonter salad is unbelievable- you have to try it! It was Restaurant Week when we went and the menu was varied for all tastes. Great service, great food - what more can you want? Be sure to leVe room for dessert. You will not be disappointed.
The receptionist was inattentive, indifferent. Our table wasn't ready when we arrived. The waitress was very busy, perhaps "overtabled". We could feel her stress, and service was slow. Steak (medium rare) was served cool on the outside, and cold on the inside. Everybody has a bad night now and then.
We wekt for the Sunday Brunch. The food was great, and the omelette and waffle chef was friendly and amazing as always!
The service, not so great. It took some time for our waitress to see us to ask what we'd like for drinks, and we had to ask for refills on drinks when she finally came back for the empty plates.
Friends from out of state got together and had a great time in a beautiful restaurant. Taylor, our waitress, was excellent as well. Great evening!
The service is always top notch and Chris took great care of us again on this visit!! Enjoyed the food as we always do!
Excellent all around.
We always have a great meal!! And Mary is the best server!!!
Mary was an awesome server!!!!
Food was great!!!
Will be returning!!!
As always this restaurant was outstanding. Great options, good food and great service. Perfect place to meet friends.
very comfortable, great food. I drove from Middlebury to celebrate my girls birthday we very mu;ch enjoyed the Sunday brunch.
Service and specials were outstanding, aged New York Strip was perfectly done and tender. Vermont salad was wonderful and definitely worth the $3 up charge! No room for desert and brought leftovers home for lunch!
Ambiance would have been considerably better if the woman across the aisle did not have a loud abrasive voice. Fortunately, she left before the food arrived. Otherwise, the restaurant is conducive to quiet, friendly conversation, depending on the seating.
Three entrees and two of the diners thought their meals were excellent. My stuffed veal chop was rare and a bit chewy, and I have never had veal prepared that way, so I figured it was normal. It was interesting, but would not order it again, nor could I recommend it. Loaded chips for an appetizer were great, and the romaine salad also fantastic as well as the garlic mashed potatos. No desert, but the coffee was fresh and equal to any black coffee served at an elite, obnoxious cafe.
This is a fine restaurant with great service, known for it's steak, which is what I would recommend.
J. Morgan's brunch buffet is the best in the area. Absolutely suggest stopping in if you're in town. I recommend a reservation.
This was our 2nd try at j Morgan’s. Just like the 1st time the service here is sorely lacking. It’s really a shame as the food is good. J morgans needs a serious look at their front of house. We arrived 10 mIn early for our 5:30 reservation. We were sat and then waited 10 min to be acknowledged by our server. When our server finally greeted us he was visibly flustered and told us so. We placed our app and dinner order and waited....and waited.....and waited 40 min server was never back to check on us. Then our entrees show up ...we ask where’s the appetizer ? Yep....never was entered in ! Now mind you we drove 1h15min one way to come for this chip appetizer. We sent the entrees back and told the server we wanted the appetizer. We waited some more...the app arrived and was fabulous. Then our entrees were brought back we asked if they were made over. We were told they were but they clearly were not as the steak was dry and cold as was the baked potato. We sent them back for a remake....more waiting......steak came out near raw this time at this point we had had enough. All thru this whole debacle no manager ever came by to apologize or access the situation. The server did take the appetizer off our check. Needless to say this will be our last trip to j Morgan’s if you want great food and miserable service this place is for you.
Aside from being sat at the worst placed table in the place, this was an excellent experience. Staff was friendly, food was amazing.
Birthday - daughter Home from college
The atmosphere was nice, the staff was professional, the steaks are quality cuts although over seasoned, the prices were a little high for what you get, and my only complaint was the food was not hot when it was served as if it had sat before the waiter served it.
The Billionaire's cake, which I thought would be huge, had 1 bite of lobster claw, 3 medium shrimp and a crab cake. Not what I would call a Billionaire's cake.
Good food always done well. Service usually is poor. THe food makes up for it but they could really improve this.
I have been a number of times, and it is a good steak house. The service, this last time in particular, was great, and the food is always good.
Burger was a little under cooked and lobster mac and cheese was a little watery. A couple things were forgotten and had to ask for them a second time. But over all the food tasted good and the waitress was very polite and happy.
Great food, love to go there for dinner, one of my favorite places.
We went to J Morgan’s for Valentines Day. The service was great and the food was exquisite. The atmosphere was romantic and intimate. I recommend this restaurant as a great place for a special date night!
We dine at J Morgans every year before our annual Daddy/Daughter dance. It's located within the same complex as the Capital Hotel where the ball is held. Always friendly service and great food. Moderate pricing, but if you want cheap food, go to McDonalds.
My first brunch at J. Morgan's Steakhouse. I have eaten dinner there many times and it is always my favorite restaurant in Central Vermont. I took a friend who had never been to the restaurant and she was blown away with the brunch selection and the brunch price. She is moving to Manchester, New Hampshire in two weeks and said to me "it would be worth coming back to Montpelier on a weekend just for brunch!"
The chef in the brunch serving area was great and you could tell he really liked his job. He did a great job of promoting the restaurant too as he told us of upcoming (Valentine's Day) specials.
J Morgan's is one of the best restaurants i have ever been to.
We were celebrating our daughter's 26th birthday and she works in Montpelier so frequents J. Morgan's often. It was her desired place to celebrate. It was a long drive for us, but so worth the trip!! So much food and so delicious. The beer selection is awesome as well. I usually am a wine drinker but I opted for beer. The wine list looked good as well. Loved the ambiance. It was busy- but you didn't feel like you were sitting on top of another table- so you could have your own conversation. I can't wait to go back.
I hear the brunch is amazing as well. I posted on my FB that we were there and had so many comments (all good.
There are few good spots in Montpelier where you can have a nice business dinner. The food was good, the wine selection good, and people were attentive. It was a good dining experience
Always an enjoyable experience with a great menu.
J Morgan steakhouse advertises itself as “famous” & I can see why: the steak is amazing! There are other typical menu items of pasta & seafood but I ordered a Montreal rib eye, my dinner guest ordered the New York steak. Both were prepared perfectly. We liked the onion rings topping the steaks & the seasonings were excellent. Our potatoes were delicious, garlic mashed for me, a loaded baked for my guest. The only disappointment was the mixed veggies, a little over-boiled. I would’ve liked to try a dessert but the entree portion was so large we didn’t have room for dessert.
The cakes were enormous and delicious. The value was great considering it took us two days to eat our desserts. If you want a great carrot cake to feed your family of four, look no further!
We had a great meal, And at first the service was great! By the end of the night service went down hill as the server told us his whole life story including problems with his girlfriend. That we could have done with out!
We had a fabulous time enjoying a night out for our anniversary. The food was delicious! I had the Cobb salad and my husband had the seafood platter and both were great! The salad was HUGE! I appreciated that the wait staff packages up your left overs for you.
Dinner was very good.. We did find a hair in one of our meals under the steak.. dessert was to die for! Loud and service is a little slow. Expensive, but worth it for special occasions!!
Good food but felt very rushed, we had a 8:15 table booked, felt very rushed with plates being taken away as we finished one by one, asked if we wanted desert at 9pm as the chef wanted to go home, vacuuming at 10pm was the sign to leave
Another great time at J Morgan's. The food was terrific as usual, the service was good, but not as exceptional as usual. We always have a great time.
I found this restaurant a tremendous disappointment. Purportedly voted the “best steakhouse in Central Vermont,” I cannot help but feel very sorry for the people of Central Vermont. The garlic bread is a saturated, oily mess sprinkled with some type of indiscernible cheese-product sprinkled on top, and the wedge salad (which I had thought was a virtual impossibility to ruin) was presented with tasteless blue cheese crumbles and a tasteless buttermilk dressing. The two 7 oz filet mignons for me and my guest were both over cooked. The garlic mashed potatoes tasted as though they had been prepared five hours earlier. All in all, an awful meal. Avoid if at all possible.
Amazing meal from start to finish! Drinks to the entrees to the chocolate cake was top notch! Will be back very soon.
Wonderful time with close family..it's my moms favorite place to eat. Easy access as she has health issues.
Unfortunately, we were unimpressed with the food. The $8, small cup, of French onion soup was good however, it was barely luke warm. The salad special was all romaine and very little chicken or gorgonzola or anything else. I bet there was a whole head of romaine in the salad - not kidding at all! The balsamic vinegar dressing was extremely oily. We asked for a little more gorgonzola and were charged an extra $2 each. Now, if the salads had a reasonable amount of cheese, I would fully expect to pay more to get more however, this wasn't the case at all. We had to dig through all the greens to find the chicken or cheese. After much discussion and very little empathy, the manager did finally offer to comp one of the salads. For the price and quality of food we had, I wouldn't recommend. It's very unlikely we'll return.
Excellent Caesar salad, dry-aged steak, fries, and veg. Pleasant enough scene, though perhaps a little outdated and run down. Excellent service (pleasant, engaged, responsive, unobtrusive). Would happily go back.
