J. Gilbert’s – Wood Fired Steaks & Seafood - McLean Ratings and Reviews
We went here for Valentine's Day, but we had been there previously.
Great ambiance and great service compliments the great tasting food. When I arrived I was concerned because the parking lot appeared full. They wisely had thought of this and provided a complimentary valet parking... problem solved!
Thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
Went there for the Valentine special which was advertised for dinner AND LUNCH!
Made lunch reservations and told the Valentine special was only available;e for Dinner.
False advertising... a.k.a. "Bait and Switch"
Will not go for these "advertised" specials again.
VERY DISSAPOINTED .
We looked forward to celebrating my birthday there the desert was a nice touch at the end. The steaks were delicious. My only complaint is the wait staff. The at least three out of the 5 times dining there I found the waiter or waitress not very friendly or attentive. If my wife complains about the service you know it's pretty poor. She is offend more tolerant at that than I am. This is my 5th time to this restaurant, food was always great, the ambiance is nice and the dinks are fantastic. This time we brought guest from out of town to eat there. If you can get the wait staff to be more attentive and all service the customers better this would enhance the dinning experience.
My wife and I dined here last Saturday. I made reservations on line which was very simple, I even received a text when our table was ready. We walked in and were seated immediately. The server was great. Very friendly but not overbearing. The atmosphere was pleasant. We ordered filet and lobster, and had a salad and crab bisque. The crab bisque and main courses were absolutely delicious. We didn't care for the sides very much. I had the glazed carrots and a baked potatoes and my wife had the grilled Brussels sprouts, baked potatoes and baked corn. The carrots tasted fine but didn't look very appetizing, the Brussels left a Smokey after taste, the baked corn tasted fine but were a little liquidy and the potatoes could have used a little less salt. The last thing is the price. In our opinion having dined in many high end steakhouses, the prices are a little escalated, but this could be due to the area they are located. Work on those sides guys...
Me and my husband went J.Gilbert's for our anniversary. My husband ordered a steak and I ordered lobster. Lobster was pretty good, however, the steak was not good. We were very disappointed since we had to pay significant amount for that. I rather eat a McDonald's premium burger.
I go to J. Gilbert's every year for my birthday, and now many of my friends to do. We love to come here for the annual splurge! I am a meat lover, but even though the burger is fabulous here, I nearly always get the veggie platter. I don't like mushrooms, but the mushrooms on the platter are my favorite thing on it. They do such a great job! This year, I anticipated a lot more people, so they gave us a private room, which was nice. The room was quite cold, but they turned the heat on for us several times (evidently, it was on a timer), and they were very gracious when 6 of my expected guests bailed. The traffic was particularly terrible that night, but it was still worth coming here. I love my J. Gilbert's birthday! The 7-layer coconut cake is my go-to dessert each year. I love it! The penne dish is also outstanding. Another friend had the special, which was coconut-encrusted tilapia. It looked delicious, and she polished it off. Another friend ordered the berries and cream and loved it. Thank you, J. Gilbert's!
Service is usually great, but this time it was terrible. The waiter was rude and we only saw him when we ordered our food. He argued with us about how we didn't get our bread, literally after 45 minutes of being there??? Barked at us for asking, saying it burned twice. We had to ask for straws multiple times. Felt like we were an inconvenience for him. He eventually ended up leaving for home for being sick. He never apologized for his behavior. It was a birthday dinner so we were pretty upset.
J.Gilbert’s Sunday brunch buffet never disappoints! With a large selection of breakfast goods such as bacon, sausage, and potatoes; salmon and a tasty chicken dish; an omelet station; meat carving; fantastic fresh berries and cut fruit. And delicious smoked fish! And of course, amazing waffles! Excellent service.
Experience was overall great, for a first time dinner. The cocktails were well crafted (House Manhattan and a Fizz). The quality of the food was as expected-delicious (cowboy cut steak and crab cake meals). Service was okay, slightly forgetful of request at times but kept the water glass full so the detail is there, give-and-take. The ambience is great, very quite, low light, and great hostess service. I’m sure this establishment is capable of an extra star or two.
There are many steakhouses around D.C., but most follow a tired formula. J. Gilberts dares to differ in several ways. First, the steaks are mesquite grilled, which gives the meat a sweetness not found in other steakhouses. Second, while the entree price is as high as elsewhere, at J. Gilberts each entree includes two sides. That's a significant difference and a significant savings. The sides are uniformly excellent and the portions are, as elsewhere, generous enough for sharing. Lastly, you can enjoy this restaurant even if you're not in the mood for steak. There are plentiful seafood, salad and vegetarian options.
In addition to our food being excellent, service was perfect.
Specific suggestions: If they have a dry-aged steak special the night you're there, get it. Also, don't miss the scrumptious coconut cake dessert.
This is one of my favorite places; been going here for years. However, this visit was exceptionally disappointing. My steak was hard to chew (never been the case previously). And the waiter acted like he didn't want to be there. I had to ask for a water refill; he should have noticed. And at the end of the meal, he looked at the table to see if we had put our payment on the payment tray but failed to notice that both our water glasses and coffee cups were empty. He also came back to to the table after taking my order to ask me what sides I had chosen. Clearly an off night for the waiter.
Everyone in the party loved what they ordered and was very happy. Our party consisted of one dad, 1 24-year-old, 1 23-year-old, 1 21-year-old and 1 20-year-old. Always a wonderful thing when all of these young people are happy. Service was great. It made for a wonderful 21st birthday party for my son.
Our go-to steak place. In our top five favorite places to go anytime. The menu is simple and elegant. The entire menu has been consistently fabulous - we've never had a bad item. Wines are extraordinary. A hip, brisk and friendly wait staff. Ambience is cozy-dark, strategically lit; nice fireplace! Crisp and modern but not cold decor - really you don't notice it, which is true elegance. Not a stuffy place, and yet the cuisine is the height of great cooking.
