J. Gilbert’s – Wood Fired Steaks & Seafood - McLean Ratings and Reviews
Outstanding in every way! There were six of us and not only were the steaks perfect, the crab cakes and salmon were , too. The steak- eaters shared a bottle of wine-a J. Atlas cab-that was a wonderful complement to our meal. The desserts, crème brulee, cinnamon ice cream and chocolate cake, met the high bar of the rest of our meals. Our server, Aziz couldn't have been better; he was attentive, answered our questions and was spot on in his recommendations.
We've been to JGilbert's regularly and have never been disappointed. We love the fact that they let us share and provide separate plates with the entrée potato and vegetable on each plate all at no extra charge.
Ordered top sirloin and glazed salmon. Top sirloin was slightly over cooked. I asked for medium but it came out medium well and some parts well. Salmon was amazing. Service was great as usual but the server was a little overwhelming. Overall, another good experience. I would definitely go back.
I wish they’d use goslings for their dark and stormys. There isn’t too much variety on their cocktail menu; just standards that skew male. The baked potatoes are the best I’ve tasted in the NOVA/DC area. Not sure where they come from or how they cook them but they’re yummy. Steak s consistently delish -
everything else is hit or miss. Either really good or just ok. If you live in the area, it’s a solid choice but I wouldn’t drive a notable distance to eat here.
Meeting a small group for mutual birthdays and Gilberts was a good choice. Very busy for a Tuesday night. Free valet parking helped a lot. Good variety on menu, reasonably priced. Very decent wine list, though we brought our own (reasonable corkage fee). Server seemed new. Otherwise all went well.
We were greeted very promptly & professionally by the front of the house staff and were
Seated immediately for our scheduled reservation. Staff were very professional, personable, attentive & accommodating, throughout the evening, especially Steven. The food was OUTSTANDING as were the drinks we ordered. First time at J. Gilbert's and will definitely return for the best steaks ever!!!
I have been going to J. Gilbert's for years and its no longer what it used to be. Whether there was a problem in the kitchen or with our waitress, we had the worse experience ever. We were altogether six people and only one of us got what she had ordered and even not quite. The pan seared rockfish turned out to be breaded with a sweet potato that you could break someone's head with. The hamburger was supposed to be medium cooked and first it came out rare and then came out well done with burnt sides and a slimy sauce stuck to the corners. The sweet potato fries were soggy at first and then the new batch was fine. The salad with the steak that was not supposed to have bacon on it, came with the bacon. And the salmon we had ordered, came as another breaded rockfish. The waitress had an attitude and was even blaming us for not being happy. All in all, its not longer the family restaurant we have been going to for years. And this was supposed to be a birthday dinner for a friend. We left hungry to go take out food somewhere close by. The restaurant didn't charge us but it was truly a night we will not forget.
Caesar salad - apparently you ran out (said the server). So, it wasn’t good. Lettuce was like leftover pieces. No croutons/Parmesan shavings and very little dressing. No cracked pepper. Lettuce was old (red on it). Steak was unfortunately over cooked. Apple croustade was great but ice cream was completely melted on top when served to us. So, I guess it sat in the back and then given to us regardless of it being completely melted. Pretty disappointed to come for Thanksgiving and have this happen. We love J.Gilbert’s so we were disappointed overall. Probably won’t come for holidays anymore.
We chose this restaurant to celebrate Thanksgiving, because it had a solid menu and a good price point. The restaurant was packed when we arrived, but we were greeted by a very friendly hostess.
Once we were sat, it took more than 10 minutes for our server to even acknowledge us. But we chalked it up to the restaurant being busy.
However, we needed to know whether there were gluten-free options on the Thanksgiving menu. J. Gilbert's offers a separate, robust gluten-free menu, so we figured that this was a reasonable request. Our server, however, didn't seem to think so. While he was pretty sure there were gluten-free options for dessert, he was highly annoyed that we asked whether the soups were gluten-free and had to find out. Another 10 minutes later....
We ordered our drinks and entrees at the same time, because we weren't sure when we'd see him again.
Our first course arrived, and everything was okay. However, when our entrees arrived, everything was not okay.
Two of us order filet mignons medium rare. Both of our steaks (at a steakhouse, mind you) were overcooked—bordering on medium well, which left us with a very pricey, dry cut of dead cow. My other companion, who is averse to bleeding meat (and ordered her sirloin medium), received a perfectly medium-rare steak.
We're not complainers and probably would have been okay if our server had just checked on us. But our server did not check on us—at any point during the consumption of our entree (which we ate uncharacteristically slowly in the hope he'd ever arrive). All we wanted was someone to know. Alas...
We didn't see our server until it was time to order our desserts, when his attitude changed slightly. I think he even tried to make a joke. Too little, too late.
Ultimately, we had what could have been a lovely Thanksgiving ruined by poor service and mediocre food. But the pineapple ice cream was amazing. That was the best thing we had. At a steakhouse.
Party of 5 for Thanksgiving. The food was exceptional and plentiful. 3 of us enjoyed the traditional 3-course turkey entree; one had salmon and the other had steak and scallops. Our server, Steven, was wonderful. Very attentive. Even though the restaurant was crowded, we were not hurried by the staff. This may become our tradition! Also, appreciated the complimentary valet parking.
We were there for Thanksgiving dinner, and the food was excellent. The server was top notch, friendly, helpful, and just plain nice. We were seated immediately. There was valet parking which was lucky as there were SO many people there. Despite the place being packed, the food came out quickly, and they were able to accommodate requests. The only downside I would mention is there was no vegetarian entree on the Thanksgiving menu. They WERE offering various choices from their general menu, but not much of a selection for vegetarians. As a pescatarian, they were very happy to mix and match a bit from the Thanksgiving menu to provide crab cake, scallops or salmon. I chose the crab cake and scallops and they were delicious.
We have been going to J Gilbert for many years. We have never been disappointed with the food, service or ambiance. Yesterday was Eleonora's birthday and she was very pleased with the selection of venue and menu.
The exposed brick finish of the restaurant's exterior and interior makes it, at the same time, casual and attractive.
