J. Gilbert’s – Wood Fired Steaks & Seafood - McLean Ratings and Reviews
I have eaten here numerous times for both lunch and dinner and really enjoy the ambiance and the food. It was a birthday celebration and all of our meals were excellent. Both the beef and seafood were cooked to perfection. There is a fabulous selections of sides and all are very good. The coconut cake is outstanding. The only disappointment was the service- our waiter was not great on clearing our plates after appetizers..we had to stack them to make more room on the table and they stayed there for a long time because we didn’t see the waiter until later in the meal to ask to have them removed.
When we came in the host noted we were celebrating a birthday but there was no candle on the cake.
We did have a birthday coupon for $25 off the birthday entree which is really nice feature if you are on their email list.
Overall this is a great place with great food for any and all occasions and for lunch and dinner!!!!!!
The steaks were truly excellent and the sides were prepared perfectly. This was a Birthday late lunch and our server really took care of us including adding a special chocolate cake and raspberry ice cream dessert. We also shared a great cheesecake that was one of the best we have had. We’ve had many extraordinary brunches here as well as having enjoyed one of the very best happy hours that offers many choices. We will return often.
The host seemed overwhelmed and uncomfortable. We reserved on OpenTable weeks earlier and he seemed surprised that we arrived on time. The table wasn't ready and we had to wait. The food was good, however the servers were focused on a noisy table behind us and they took significant time bringing us drinks, refilling our drinks, bringing us extra silverware, and remembering any of our additional requests, even cream and sugar with our coffee. The table behind us was just as large as ours so we should have gotten equal attention. The food was good but the service is questionable. It was sunday brunch and its usually very busy, so their wait staff and hosts should not have been so ill-prepared.
Service was attentive. Shrimp app was very good and they offer a good wine selection. Everything from there was downhill. Quality of steaks have substantially declined. Filet mignon was all muscle and could not be cut. Sirloin was dry and grainy. Augratin potatoes were dry. They were apologetic and removed the entree charges. In the frenzy they never wished my husband a Happy Birthday. Very disappointing results from what has been for years our local GO TO steakhouse.
I enjoy J. Gilberts on a regular basis. The service is inconsistent - sometimes great and other times slow and the order not well filled. Last night was the latter. That said, they offered to provide without charge for goodwill, which was not necessary and appreciated. The food is consistent and good. I will return.
1st visit here and we were highly satisfied from the phenomenal customer service from beginning to end and of course the food.
Our Server for the evening was AK, who’s engaging and accommodating demeanor with his his seasoned knowledge of the menu and kitchen-preparations was an overall plus.
After looking over the extensive menu (in which their wine & cocktail is just as extensive) we settled on our selections. My Companion ordered the Maple Plank Roasted Salmon that was basted in a light Bourbon Glaze, accompanied by Yukon Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans with Pecans.
I ordered the Char Crust Ahi Tuna that prepared with a quick searing, Grilled Asparagus & opted for French Fries over the Parmesan Herb Roasted Potatoes. As a sauce craver, I requested sides of JG's Original Steak sauce called 'The Hit Sauce' & a Bourbon Sauce which complimented my Ahi Tuna perfectly. That & in addition to having a glass of one of my favorite Argentina Malbecs - Alamos.
We were absolutely delighted with the ambience, quality of our food, the friendliness of the staff & indeed with AK's superior service.
Looking forward to our next visit very soon.
This visit was not as good as in the recent past. Strangely the restaurant was not even busy but the less than quality service received would have led one to believe the service staff must have been extremely busy. Even the food was not up to the recent past standards.
Our main courses were luke warm and what used to be a great salted baked potatoe was sadly dry with just enough warmth to melt the soft butter but cooled down well before it could even be enjoyed. Not once during the meal did the server ever pass by let alone stop at the table to check on the food. In the end took home much of the food to heat up so it might actually be enjoyed.
Even when presenting the check the server never asked how the meal was just handing over boxes to few and too small. The host (possibly a manager on duty) at the host stand did inquire as we were leaving about the meal, but by than it truly was too late. We quickly did mention our experience to which he did apologize.
I would still go back and just caulk this one night as just a server who didn't care and a kitchen not checking what was being served.
This place is for special occasions. It’s pricy, but generally worth it. I called and told the reservations folks that we were celebrating a birthday (and was expecting some kind of gratuity). When we arrived, the receptionist said, “And which of you is having a birthday?” I pointed him out and felt assured he would get some small culinary delight. Nothing happened. Sad.
I had a 4 oz steak with Caesar side and a great carrot and pecan side. It was all very tasty and the apple pie alamode was very good.
If only there was follow up re the birthday, then this place would’ve gotten a higher rating. When I called to make the reservation, they should have told me what I could expect or give me a priced option in advance. I suppose I should have asked.
We had a wonderful lunch, the service was superb and the menu had lots to pick from including smaller lunches to big meals. Food was delicious and the soups we ordered arrived hot, which I love. The complementary bread arrived warm and tasty and we split a wonderful dessert. We were all happy we tried jgilberts - a real find!
This was our second time at the J. Gilbert's. Food is always good. I was very happy to find a very good bottle of wine to celebrate our occasion at 50% off :)
There was a small hick up on my husband's order but that was quickly fixed.
Just the right amount of attention from the server that gave us plenty of time to enjoy each other's company. Restaurant was packed but noise level was low.
We will consider this restaurant for future.
I've visited and reviewed this restaurant several times here. I've always been pleased with my dinners, though it's pricey enough so that I don't go there but a few times a year.
Service is usually very good, not intrusive, but attention to refilling water glasses, etc, and checking at an appropriate time to see that everything with the order is OK.
This is the first time that our server tried to upsell me on a steak. I enjoy their top sirloin and he tried to up me to the Kansas City strip. When I pointed out that I liked the flavor of the sirloin and that the KC was more expensive, he said "it's only a couple of dollars more" - yeah, like $14 more. He also forgot to bring tea that was ordered. He must have ignored it because it wasn't on the bill. The hostess got it for our tea drinker when she stopped by to greet us at our table and asked if all was well.
This is all not a reason to give up J. Gilberts, just an off night for the server, I guess.
