J. Gilbert’s – Wood Fired Steaks & Seafood - McLean
We've been coming here since last century's Charlie's Place ... say no more.
Residing just 2mi further in, we consider J. Gilbert's our off-site dining room. Either the Finest Hour, or a simple dinner, happen at least 15-20 times annually. So far, so good ...
J. Gilbert's challenge: avoid our 1st disappointment ... ever ... ;=))
First, we have gone to J Gilbert’s many years, and like it very much. This is a one off review, and we’ll be going back, but if your friends don’t tell you you don’t know. We are not cranks and look forward to returning. That night we had a reservation and were seated promptly. It was not busy, but it took literally 25 minutes for the waitress to acknowledge we were there.
We struck up a conversation with the busboy — whom we have known for years and love — but thought, “what is going on?” We finally submitted our orders, and the food came in about 25 minutes. The restaurant was not busy.
We both had the 6 oz filet, and I had a double order of asparagus. I received six pieces of asparagus on the double order. For $36 it just was not good value. The steaks were correctly prepared, but again, they are the size of a medium hamburger. For $36? Ridiculous.
It took a while to get the check, I tipped 20% and thanked the hostesses, but with so many new restaurants around I need my neighborhood gem to pick up the pace, please. Thanks.
This place typically has good service - well trained staff who are helpful. They are generous on birthdays. Onion ring appetizer is really good, as are the prix fixe specials - petite sirloin is particularly good if you don’t want to go full carnivore.
I had a wonderful time at J. Gilbert’s. The wait staff was friendly and attentive. The food was delicious. I would recommend this establishment.
The food is always great! My steak and scallops were cooked perfectly. It’s always a treat coming here!
Hugo is a fantastic server! The filet Oscar was especially terrific. We will be back to dine again.
Anniversary dinner! The wait staff is always exceptional at J Gilbert’s. Very nice, knowledgeable, and never too pushy or annoying. Excellent meal and cocktails as well. No wonder the parking lot is always so full!
I was very disappointed with this experience. I ordered a filet mignon cooked medium rare but it was delivered to me rare. The server took it away to “be brought to the correct temperature,” but that left the other food on my plate to cool. He brought it back medium rare, but by that time I was disappointed with the meal. My roasted potatoes were mushy and the 3 spears of grilled asparagus still had inedible ends on them. I won’t go back to this restaurant.
It is a "meh." Both my wife and I commented on how the whole place, from the sticky floors to bathroom , could use a good deep cleaning, let alone an updating of decor back 1986. The food was fine, nothing special, but certainly not to the price of that atmosphere. Can't recommend.
We were big fans of Rays the Steaks in Arlington. It was really the only place we went for steaks, but since it closed down we had to try some place new. The happy hour at the bar was great. Great food and drink deals, very loud in there and busy but the service was great.
Once we got to our table the waiter was just ok. He tried to sell us the most expensive things on the menu even after we told him what we were looking for. We each got a steak but there is nothing to top the steak with except flavored butters that you have to pay extra for. 2 sides come with the steaks but no shareable sides like many steak restaurants. I got asparagus as my side....4 pieces of asparagus that was probably 2 spears cut in half. My husband paid extra for the lobster mac and cheese side... don't waste your money. It had maybe a speck of lobster in it. The truffled mushrooms and the risotto were both great. The waiter never came back to check on us so my husbands drink sat empty the entire meals.
Overall, happy hour was great, will go again for that. Not disappointed by my steak but not excited by it either. Definitely way over priced for what you get. I'd go back again and try something else. Definitely recommend happy hour.
Food was amazing. The wife and I both had the steak. The steaks were cooked perfectly. We asked for a side of the BBQ sauce. The steaks did not need the sauce but do yourself a favor and ask for the sauce......amazing. Drinks were great and great service.
Have been to JGilberts many times, and Usually very good, but had fixed price with 6 Oz filet, and filet was very dry, not juicy, lukewarm. Odd because it was cooked to medium as requested, so was pink but just lifeless. Very odd and not look appetizing.
My husband had the 10 Oz sirloin which he said was very good, and it looked good. I was offered a free dessert which did not make sense since dessert was included in fixed price. It was my husbands bday, so he got dessert anyway.
In the past the service has been excellent. At this visit the service was poor at best.
The waiter was very slow with checking if we had everything for our meal which we didn’t. We asked some other staff for help and I assume they told our waiter after some time he finally showed up. When it was time for the check he was going to overcharge us. The Birthday lunch experience could have been much better had we had quality service. He never came to collect the payment we left behind not did he thank us
I found a piece of plastic wrap in my spinach.
Food is excellent and totally worth the cost. Service a little inattentive but good.
You can't go wrong. Outstanding service. Outstanding food
JGilberts is an Upscale dining experience in McLean that never disappoints. The Food and refreshments are always first rate and the restaurant’s quality and comfortable ambiance makes for a most enjoyable dinner. Also importantly, JGilbert staff are very accommodating and go out of their way in efforts to please guests.
Service was terrible on Sunday, September 1st. Our waiter brought out our appetizers after our meals had already arrived to our table. My nephews' beverage (milk) was never brought out to the table until we asked for it a second time. Our table was drinking mostly water, but our water glasses were never refilled. Lastly, the lamb was a terrible dish this past visit, mostly fat. Lastly, my nephews received mango ice cream instead of the vanilla/chocolate that they asked for. We spoke with the manager who reduced our bill by $25 for the poor service and $42 for the terrible lamb dish. We eat at J Gilberts often (at least once per month) and have a consistently excellent visit both from a food and service perspective, so this past visit was quite a surprise. Maybe it was a busy evening or they were understaffed, but we felt that our waiter was taking good care of his other tables, or at least it appeared to be that way. Felt we shouldn't have to ask for water refills or have our appetizers arrive after our dinners. In fact, I had recently been there, Monday 8/26, and had a terrific meal with friends. Just thought that I would pass this on.
Always a great choice for a wonderful dining experience.
Delicious high quality food. Our server was great and really made the brunch a memorable experience.
I took my mother-in-law and her sister to brunch at J. Gilbert's. They were greatly impressed with the entire experience but especially the delicious fare and the outstanding personal service provided by our friendly and accommodating waiter, David L. (a.k.a., the fried oyster finagler) ! Thank you for making it an extra great treat for them during their visit from Pittsburgh.
Hugo was our waiter and it was first class! Took great care of us. Brunch was delicious.
Two words: chocolate fountain!
Actually, everything was delicious, but the chocolate fountain (for coating strawberries and the like) was super.
We both had glasses of Conundrum Red Blend. My wife got the salmon with mashed potatoes and spinach. I got the 6 oz filet/crab cake combo, with baked potato and spinach. My wife liked to salmon, but thought my combo was better. I enjoyed my combo--the crab cake is great! I asked for lemon and cocktail sauce for the crab cake. The only problem--about which I did not say anything-- was that I wanted the filet medium but it was rare. I don't know why that happened but I ate it anyway. I retrospect, I should have sent it back.
It's always a pleasure to dine at J Gilberts. Highly recommended.
We go to J. Gilbert's several times a year so I know the excellent menu but this was the first time my 1 1/2 year old son ordered from the kids menu. I ordered the chicken tenders and smashed potatoes with a little hesitation and it was AMAZING. Some of the best, most tender chicken I have tasted.
Thanks for making our young family's experience so wonderful.
Service is great. Steak frite was so so．other steaks were lovely.
We were there to celebrate our 43rd wedding anniversary. We were a bit disappointed because last year they were ready for us with a table cloth and a greeting. This year, we had to wait to be seated and there was no mention of anything personal which is unusual for J. Gilbert's. The food was exceptional and the waiter was distracted but efficient. The food is so delicious that we can overlook the lack of personal interaction by the wait and host staff.
always good! Never had a bad meal or poor service. always great choice!
Usually top rate but had gastrointestinal issues within an hour after my meal. I will return but will be cautious.
Steak over cooked, broccolini was dry and tasteless, served me regular coffee instead of decaf and was awake until 3 am.
Our server Deelon was terrific. The bread, house salad and NY Cheesecake were all delicious. Unfortunately, my main course could have been a lot better. I ordered the 18oz bone-in "Cowboy Cut" ribeye which was the smallest Cowboy cut ribeye I have ever had - I doubt it was anywhere near 18oz It was also mostly overcooked even though I specified exactly how I wanted it cooked - a few bites were perfect, a few bites were tough and the rest was overcooked. For one of the sides, I had the Wild Mushrooms with truffle butter - the shrooms were good though there was little if any butter and no detectable truffle. For the other side, I had the Poblano potatoes au gratin which was good though not great.
I frequent J. Gilbert's and have not been disappointed
I was a bit disappointed in my 12 oz strip steak. I ordered it medium rare, but it was overcooked. I would have preferred a thicker cut steak.
Food was excellent, and our server was outstanding!
J. Gilbert's never fails on the service and quality of the food.
Everyone I bring to the restaurant have been amazed by the atmosphere and the service.
I am a longtime customer. Great place for every event.
Gilbert has amazing food choices and very tasty food. The customer service is also amazing. It's a must visit.
Staff were courteous and friendly. Booth was comfortable and spaced far enough from other booths for comfortable conversations that didn't require loud talking.
Food was delicious, especially enjoyed the Chicken Tortilla Soup with the fresh ingredients.
We have dined at J. Gilberts dozens of times and enjoyed the food, service and ambience. The food is always outstanding and the atmosphere relaxing.
The service for this visit was slow, the waiter did not once refill our water glasses but did refill our wine glasses. Desert took a little too long.
We will see you on our next visit.
We had a very bad experience yesterday. They seated us 30minutes late even though we had a reservation. When we mentioned to them , they said “sometimes we get busy”. Also, they didn’t serve the bread at all. Front desk lady had a bad attitude. We live in this neighborhood and have been going to this restaurant for many years. This was the worst.
