J. Gilbert’s – Wood Fired Steaks & Seafood - McLean
My husband and I had dinner with our daughter and her boyfriend to celebrate my husband’s birthday. We always enjoy dining at J Gilbert’s but this evening was probably one of the best evenings ever because the food and service were terrific! Particularly our waiter, James, with his attentiveness, courtesy and exceptional service made the night! We dine at fine restaurants throughout the US and in other countries and he is one of the finest servers that we’ve encountered in quite some time! Kudos to James and a sincere “thank you” for making our night so enjoyable!
Absolutely the best steak you can find in the NoVA area! We have been going to J. Gilberts for many years and the quality and service have only gotten better! The value is also good with a great wine list! The service is top of the line! All steaks come with 2 sides and they are always perfectly done. Apps and salads are also fantastic!
We were seated quickly and our server was quick to greet the table and offer us drinks. I decided on the Pardon My French while my boyfriend got a beer. We were celebrating a late valentine’s day. We both enjoyed the bread and our appetizer, pretzel-crusted onion rings. I ordered the sirloin and scallops with Brussels sprouts and asparagus. I do not like prosciutto but the server informed me that everything is fresh and made to order so if I wanted my Brussels sprouts prepared differently that was perfectly fine. I asked for them with a few seasonings, just no prosciutto, and the server said if I didn’t like them once they came out I could swap for another side. That made me feel more comfortable with my choice. When the meals came out, the server asked me to cut into my sirloin. He immediately said “wow that’s way too rare, not sure what’s going on with the kitchen today,” and grabbed a plate to take the sirloin away. The scallops were delicious. The Brussels sprouts came with no seasoning at all and I only ate one piece of those and my asparagus. The server did not ask if I would like other sides even though I didn’t eat mine. He brought the sirloin back once it had been cooked longer and it looked better inside but, because it was cut into before going back on the grill, ended up really dry. My boyfriend liked his steak but wasn’t impressed with the risotto or Brussels sprouts. Since we did not finish our meals we each ordered dessert. I got the chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream on the side instead of raspberry ice cream. The inside of the vanilla ice cream had some raspberry ice cream and when my boyfriend saw the color I joked that I had ordered my ice cream medium rare since it was pink in the middle. Anyway, $160 later, the drinks were good and I liked my dessert.
Everything was perfect except my fiances chicken came out burnt looking and tasted burnt. We just didn't want to send it back . And they had baked potatoes ready but no mashed potatoes. Weird. All else was well.
The service was great despite we were there for a buffet.

No recognition of special occasion despite noting in reservation and reminding hostess. Was an hour early before reservation but still seated late. Ultimately waited two hours before being seated and food served. Way over-priced; food taste was good. Expecting a Ruth Chris experience but received slightly better than Outback Steakhouse. Will not be returning.
Excellent as always. The steaks with the fire roasting are superb. Great atmosphere and service as well. I would always highly recommend.
Amazing. Very classy food was delicious. They have big lobster tails. This place gets real busy in the evening so make a reservation. I be going back!!
We sat at the bar before getting to table. Bar tender that waited on us made drinks that were strong and Good! Food was a bit pricey for the quantity that you received but tasty. Took my husband for a late Valentine's dinner. Overall I probably would have given it all stars but our server killed it for me. We always tip if out server puts a good effort but for some reason he felt the need to circle the gratuity portion as a reminder. I was offended as if it wasn't already big as day on the bill. I thought it was a bit rude. I however wrote a "tip" on the receipt reminding him that it's not mandatory to tip. Luckily for him my husband did

To begin with, I had trouble making the reservation through Open Table, so called J Gilbert’s directly. I wish I had asked her name (maybe Marie), but she was extremely patient and helpful. We got to the restaurant and were seated in a room by ourselves (6 of us). We were blessed to have Henry as our waiter. He engaged everyone at the table, especially the young adults. Very nice experience. We don’t live in McLean, but our daughter-in-law has wanted to go there based on how good it smells every time she drives by. Thank you!

Visited on Saturday and enjoyed a long lunch with family. The food was good and we were not rushed. This restaurant is a long standing favorite.
Everything a bit off. Lettuce in salad was old, service slow. Usually a more positive experience
my side dish looks like scrap from left over. server was ignored.
Reccomended by a co-worker, Food was so good, I recommended to my neighbor. They went the next evening and had an excellent dinner!

It was Valentine’s Day so of course I was going to shell out for some really good food at a high rated restaurant. From the very first bite of the appetizer I was hooked. The flavors were so rich and full I knew my girlfriend and I were going to have a great food experience. They had Valentines specials so I went with the Surf and Turf. Perfect portions of steak and seafood. The drinks paired the food really well also. If I were to just have one small drawback, the food was fairly warm, nearing cold, but it was still delicious.
Valentine’s Day - Of course it was packed but overall the food was absolutely amazing! The staff were handing the the pack place well. Parking was difficult due to the day would recommended scheduling a reservation, it’s so worth it.
We arrived for our reservation on time and were not seated for 35 minutes. Many others left the restaurant due to the prolonged wait even with reservations. Our food arrived cold to the table was was overpriced for the quality of the meal. The side vegetables were mushy and had very little flavor.
The food was magically delicious and everyone was very pleasant especially on such a busy day.
Yes I would recommend JGilbert. Food was delicious. My only issue was the seating was not convenient. Chairs were very low and dinning area was dark. Otherwise a great place to dine
Driven by for years finally pulled the trigger on Valentine's 2019.. The GF and I have done Ruth Chris Morton's etc and I wanted to do something new .. I didn't tell the gf I just drove ya there . Made a reservation for 7:30 and got there around 7:00.. checked in and was told it would be closer to the reservation which was fine .. grab a couple chairs and I headed to the bar to get a couple drinks . ( they have Elijah Craig).. around 7:30 we are seated and immediately a waiter comes to take our app or and drinks .. we had two waiters/waitresses on this night and they worked so well together ..
Started with the shrimp Durango' .... so good
I got the 1lb lobster tail which they only have twice a year .. Valentines and New Years . My gf got the other steak which was also a Valentine's special .. see photos..
Ambiance was great . Service was great ., can't wait to go back . I also want to try their brunch ..
Parking was a disaster. We were seated 20 minutes late, which was understandable considering it was Valentine’s Day. Once seated we were at a plastic fold out table with a table cloth which was absolutely appalling. Food was decent but nowhere near with the $60 for a ribeye and two sides. Service was above average, waitress was fairly attentive and food came out quickly. I’m not likely to return.
We have been coming to J. Gilberts many years and even before when it was Charley's. We always have a extraordinary experience. This time we came for Valentine's Day. Boy was that a mistake.
The food was the same great meal, but the restaurant was set up to take an enormous amount of people.
The staff packed too many people into the space. We had made reservations months in advance and did not get our requested table. We were put in a back room the size of a closet.
We will be back, but never again on Valentine's Day.

Went here for Valentine's Day. We've been here several times before so I was anticipating a great time. Unfortunately I was disappointed this time. We were seated in the back in a room that was way too crowded, and consequently noisy. The menu selection was very disappointing to the extent that my wife was limited to just choosing the grilled vegetable dish. I definitely will not be returning here again for Valentine's.
Excellent snd efficient service, amazing food, but the staff answering the phone could be a little courteous and gracious. The steaks have a tasty rub, and the special valentines dessert was irresistible. We left happy and content
We have been to J. Gilbert's many times. This was the best time we have had. Henry is the absolute best waiter we have ever had at J. Gilbert's. He is so pleasant, low-key, and knows his job. I don't think I have met a better waiter anywhere, to be honest. The food was delicious; I had the lobster and filet with the poblano potatoes. The poblano potatoes are very unique; I have never tasted potaoes like this anywhere. Thank you for hiring Henry; we will consider coming more often now.

Excellent food and perfect sizes. I have always been bored by the amount of food served at restaurants, but at J. Gilbert's, I was very pleasantly surprised.
Went here for a dinner with a friend and the food was of course delicious, but the wait staff was exceptional! Everyone was so kind and wanted to make sure we had a great experience and enjoyed our food!
My favorite food was definitely the dessert, chocolate cake with raspberry sherbet. Sweet with a little tang
