The food was very good their brunch and the service excellent. However, we had a handicapped person in our party and we had explicitly requested a table near the front door so that this person could experience minimum pain getting to the table. Unfortunately, the front desk gave away our table, at first, and would not seat us at a nearby table because it was "for 6 not 4." After a few minutes the manager sorted things out and we were seated. After that it was the usual very satisfying experience of J. Gilberts.
Franklin G was very attentive w/great service!
Great place for a conversation. Hugo, the server, was fantastic. We will be back.
It’s really the only steak house in McLean. In the land of the blind the one eyed man in king. Service is just ok. Food is better than most Mclean restaurants.
I took a friend out for her birthday because she loves steak. Our server helped us through the menu and even pointed out the pre-fix option which we both ended up getting. Everything was delicious - best steak I've had in a long time! Service was perfect as well - attentive but not intrusive, prompt but relaxed. Wish I could come here more often!
Server forgot to bring the appetizers
Our server was very nice and knowledgeable. The food was fantastic.
Beef only moderately good quality.
Excellent service by our waitress, Maria!! The food was outstanding!! We were never rushed & had plenty of time to enjoy our meal.
J. Gilbert's is reliably good. we had an excellent waiter -- one of the long time employees. He was congenial without being over-bearing. it is really nice to have a place where conversation is easy!
Since moving to the area in 2011, J. Gilbert has been my favorite restaurant. Birthday, Valentines Day, special occasion and numerous business lunches—this has been my destination. Tonight the service was well below par. I had to ask three different staff for a wine menu AFTER our entree was served, while our server sites over the table of 8 right next to ours. By the time I had a sip, the meat was barely warm (despite being served on a very warm plate). Manager was MIA. Clearly the server was overwhelmed; where was backup? No one would help (or maybe she needed to ask them and didn’t). The system didn’t work. The food came out from the kitchen in an uncoordinated way (it was delicious as ever).
Contrast this with a recent experience at Ruth’s Chris in San Diego. Food was comparable; service couldn’t begin to compare.
I trust the restaurant is doing well enough to get away with such poor service (the bathrooms were a mess as well). I will think twice before going back, which is a sad thing to say after so many delicious meals.
Bottom line: who’s the manager in charge? You’re falling down on the job!
The food was good but the service was almost non-existent.
Lunch specials seemed reasonably priced, portions were generous and service was attentive but....my steak frites was served rare rather than the medium rare requested. Even rare the meat was a bit tough to cut and chew. Also, I ordered a caesar salad that did not have the anchovies I like and were listed on the menu. Evidently, I had to request them. Should it not be the job of the server to ask if I want them rather than just omit them if it is not discussed?
Sunday Brunch with the family, amazing price and everything on the buffet was delicious.
Always such a great experience from the front door until the end! The staff is exceptional and the steaks cannot be better! The steaks, sides, wine and apps are amazing, as is the fresh hot bread! This is our go to place for steak!
When on a date, good ambiance and food but pricy.
We eat here often and always enjoy our meals which is what keeps us coming back. Tonight we dined with our 15 month old which we’re sometimes hesitant to do. Especially in a nicer restaurant. From the moment we walked in the staff was so warm and welcoming. To top it off tonight we had Aziz for the first time and he made our experience the most enjoyable to date. Aziz couldn’t be more accommodating. He even offered to bring our daughters meal out first. This allowed us for the first time in a restaurant to get her situated with her food well before ours arrived so we could also enjoy ours as soon as it hit the table. This may sound like a minor accommodation, but to parents dining with their children, it’s huge! Thank you, Aziz for the impeccable service. The manager on duty also couldn’t have been nicer when she stopped by our table to check on us. She related to us as parents and made us feel welcome. These small acts of kindness are what keeps us coming back time and time again.
Truly enjoyed our experience with our family.
Good food. Consistent for many years and continues to be very cozy. Had a great waiter and the portions were all right.
Food was amazing. Server was attentive. I like the ambiance. A great birthday experience.
Great steak. Great food and great yime had by all. Celebrated my birthday and all the patron near joined in singing happy birthday to me.
Food is ok. Rib was not fully heated. Service is mediocre at best.
Delicious food and notable wines by the glass and bottle keep us returning again and again. The sourdough bread is the best and we highly recommend the onion rings as a splurge!
The soup was only lukewarm . . . soup should always be HOT
Our meals were delicious, the service was attentive yet unobtrusive, and the setting very pleasant.
The food was delicious! I especially liked the Au gratin potatoes. The black berry martini was also really good. Our server Rico was great. Looking forward to dining out again at J-Gilberts.
Food was excellent as usual. Service was OK to good.
Celebrating my Marine Corp Marathon
My out-of-town guests were very pleased with the over-all experience of Gilbert's. Our waiter, Henry, was very helpful in deciding what to eat and a joy to talk with. My salmon dinner was moist and delicious.
I heard that my brother's steak was also very good. All of the dinners were presented well on the plates.
Brunch food was excellent with a wide variety.
Best Sunday Brunch in the area. Hostess was welcoming upon arrival and seating was immediate. We did have reservations
Brunch here is the best! The price went up slightly but I still enjoyed the experience with my family over the weekend.
We spent a wonderful time with friends and enjoyed the cozy atmosphere and excellent food and service!
The food at J. Gilbert’s is reliably good. The service depends on the waiter or waitress that is assigned to your table. Our waiter took a long time in coming around. Once he did, he took our cocktail, dinner and wine orders. Our cocktails came out, our food came out, but our wine did not arrive and our waiter was no where to be found. We flagged other wait staff, a hostess and I believe a manger. Our wine finally arrived at the table, but at that point, we were almost done with our meal. Someone told us that they would comp the wine (2 glasses), which was a very nice gesture. However, charges for both glasses of wine appeared on the check. We flagged down our waiter, who returned with a new check with the cost for one of the glasses of wine removed. We showed him the charge for the second glass, and he returned with the correct bill: no charge for either glass of wine.
Again, the service depends on the waiter or waitress that is assigned to your table.
It was my son’s first birthday and the staff was great. I will definitely be back. My little one had a ball!
Second time within 6 months that we've eaten at J. Gilbert's and gotten terribly sick from the food. They must use preservatives on their steaks or food because we never get feel this awful eating anywhere else. First time we thought it was an anomaly but now after it happening a second time, we know it's issues with their food. Also, service is not terribly hospitable. Used to be so much better. Tysons is beckoning with better restaurants.
The waiter was curt and seemed annoyed to be working. Ordered a flight of Pinot Noir and he just poured and walked away. He barely checked on us and was mostly inattentive, nearly rude.
We are fans of an Gilbert, and we eat here 2 or 3 times a month. Our reservation was for Friday night at 6:30. Food was delicious, it our waitress was exceptional.
Excellent waitress. Great food (and they accommodate gluten free requirements very well). Only complaint is it’s a very busy and thus very noisy place.
