J. Gilbert’s – Wood Fired Steaks & Seafood - McLean
First the bisque was extremely salty and came to the table very sloppy sloshed all over the bowl. Then for my main course I expressed to the waiter I had a food allergy and she brought the allergen to the table on my plate anyway. I had to transfer my food onto another random plate on the table so I didn’t have an allergic reaction. My lip still tingled when it was time to go. This lacking attention to detail could cost someone with a severe allergy their life. I do not trust this restaurant.
J Gilbert’s is a great local restaurant, we are never disappointed with the service, the food or the ambiance. This time we were there as a send off meal for our son before he goes to college. The restaurant week menus were great value and choices. Really enjoyed our salads, steaks and desert. Only very small observation- the appetizers came out before we got our drinks.
I think we hit an off night, a Sunday in restaurant week although we ordered from the regular menu. Service was good but service staff seemed over extended. It was a challenge just to get a complete set of utensils. Mixed drinks were good but in two cases, glasses were dirty at the rims(not acceptable!) and we would have sent them back but decided not to complain because of over extended servers. We both ordered the filet combo and the 4 oz. filet was perfectly cooked and the scallops were delicious, but servings of each were the smallest we've ever experienced here. The green beans with pecans were a letdown this time. very tough and without flavor. We prefer to give a good review, and we have had some nice meals here, but we spent a fair amount of money and left feeling disappointed.
Food was great, service was out standing!! Will definitely be back soon!
Decided to give it a try after seeing the open table rating and looking at the menu. Lucked into restaurant week specials. Excellent food and service. Each dish was as good or better than the next. The potato chips with blue cheese dip was amazing. Loved the sauces that accompanied the onion rings. The crab bisque and potato soup were wonderful and different than most. The wood fired steaks had so much flavor and were cooked to perfection. The crab cakes were tasty without any significant filler and broiled perfectly. So glad we took a chance for our celebratory dinner. Plus we had a great bottle of wine. Will definitely return.
Cleanliness could be improved. Many plates at the buffet were dirty. Floor was slippery.
Love the food and the ambiance...service is always excellent
We've been to Gilbert's many times for the Sunday buffetand have always been happy.
Yesterday, however, was an exception. They apparently had far fewer reservations than usual so there were many empty tables but there were plenty of employees around.
Even though the place was empty, the service was awful. We had to find places to put our plates and had to wait to get coffee and juice refills.
In short, this visit felt more like Country Buffet (and they went out of business) than a high end place.
I hope this was an anomaly and not what customers can expect in the future.
On a busy Sat. night during Restaurant Week, we were very pleased with the service and quality of food. Not only offering the 3 course menu, they also offered the regular menu which some restaurants do not. The drinks were right on spot with what we ordered and expected. Food was great and normal portions. Some restaurants offer smaller portions during this week. Our server kept us entertained plus being very knowledgeable on the food and menu. Desserts offered were luscious. A good choice anytime but particularly during this special week for value offered.
The worst service ever, including cold food! The waiters attention was on another party in another room...I got my first glass of ice tea 10 minutes after arrival and my second glass at the end of dinner, the waiter didn’t even bother to ask if a refill was needed during the course of dinner. The manager was also rude. I will NEVER eat there again and I DEFINITELY won’t recommend it to my friends and family!
Celebrating my Birthday
Took forever at the end to get the check
The crab bisque was delightful and even the 6 yo enjoyed it! Steaks were cooked perfectly to temperature. The ribs were falling off the bone and my 6 year old ate 4 of them. The server was knowledgeable about allergies and my husband didn’t get sick from gluten. We’ll be back! Add in BYO wine (with $20 corkage fee) and it’s a gem.
Always a good experience. Enjoyed their Restaurant Week special price fixed menu. Great choices, great food and great service.
It’s was just ok, the steak was hot but bland, the waiter was good, food came out quickly but I would have rather had Outback. The wife had salmon and it was bland as well, the best thank was the potatoes, big let down
My friend and I always visit J. Gilbert's when we have to meet in McLean. We chose it because it has what we both like - good meat and seafood, ambience that does not have us shouting to talk, a superior serving staff, and recognition from those who have served us before.
Restaurant week without the kids!
Green beans and mashed potatoes were cold. The salmon was good. The waiter gave me a side of potatoes but not the green beans. The food was better in the past.
The crabs cakes were filled with crab meat - hardly any filler and the petit filet was very tender!
Nice place; But, Slow service and Too expensive for food quantity and quality.
We go here a few times a year, and we went this time for the restaurant week menu. Everything was great, and our server was knowledgeable and friendly but not obtrusive.
Went for the restaurant week lunch special. Food and service were good.
We use your restaurant for most of our client meetings and it is perfect every time. The food is outstanding. Your staff is very professional. Our server was Darren J and I cannot say enough about his service. He was professional and gave us time to talk business when needed.
We had a great dinner! The ambience was perfect, the company and staff was amazing. The steak was delicious!
Everything was great , thanks to Aziz and Jim
The restaurant is very well laid out and sets a great atmosphere. Overall the food was excellent, though you would think that a higher-end steakhouse would be able to properly prepare a medium-well steak. Unfortunately it was quite undercooked. I managed to work through it, and the dessert was outstanding!
This is by far the best steak restaurant around with amazing sides, bread, wine, etc. We always try to ask for Kira as our server as she is outstanding!!! There really is not a bad server at this restaurant but we have become very fond of her. We always get steak but their fish and other entrees are also so good! The vegetable and starch sides are all fantastic as well. I have been to all of the high end steak restaurants in the DC Metro Region and this one tops them all!!! A family fave!
It was my birthday celebration with family. Excellent food but more importantly fantastic service, with elegant sense of humor. Will return soon.
Brunch at J Gilbert is not nearly as good as their regular menu. This past weekend was a little worse than normal. Some of the oysters were sitting out too long, funky even for oysters. Donut holes at the table were over cooked. We were not offered waffles, which is standard part of their brunch. Shrimp also seemed like it was sitting out for a while. Cheeses are same dill havarti and smoked Gouda every time. Panna cotta comes in mystery flavors, not particularly good. In general you can get a much better brunch, which is a shame because their dinners are so great.
Hum yummy omelette cook to perfect and tender and smell so great
The prime rib steak I choose well done but tender
Waffles bring you to heaven sensations
Fruits are sweet and fresh
Shrimp and oysters are fresh.
We love your food and wonderful Sunday brunch
Variety juice to select
Service is excellent and very attentive our server is Mr Dieon thank you for fabulous service.
My overall experience at J. Gilberts was good. Inside seemed a little old but probably that the look they are going for. I love the ambiance and then fact that is not to bright inside. The food was except the fried calamari
The food was top notch, correctly prepared, plated lovely, and tasted tremendous! Best Birthday dinner ever!
Lunch specials are a great deal, soup/salad and half sandwich with fries for $15. The restaurant is fantastic, and I have never had a bad meal here. Service can't be beat, and the manager often stops by the table to ask how you like your meal. One of my favorite places in the McLean area.
We both had the small filet/crab cake combo. My wife had spinach and baked potato sides, and I had spinach and green beans sides. The food excellent--filet tender and cooked as requested, the crab cake almost all meat and with a nice crust. We each had glasses of conundrum red wine--one of our favorites.
We have a little issues with the front desk. The hosts was not that good Sunday night. Attitude was very bad and was not professional. Food and the services always nice. Just update at the front desk host. No smile and very rude upon check in. We have to go check on status 3 times before we could get a table even when we have reserved a table.
Our server was Kiara, she made sure we were very well cared for from our salads to dessert. My 4oz Filet was over cooked, easy thing to happen with such a small cut. Once notified Kiara removed my plate and brought me an entire new dinner! Wow!
The second Filet was perfect and expertly packed up for me to enjoy the next day for lunch! Awesome service and amazing food!
40th Birthday Celebration for Sister in Love!! The Service was Stellar and Dion Our Server was Amazing!!!🦋✨✨✨
