J. Alexander's - Redland's Grill - Northbrook Ratings and Reviews
I have always come here for the delicious cosmos. This past visit was a disappointment. The cosmo was not as tasty, not as sweet. And throwing a sliced lime wedge into a cosmo is disgusting. Please change back to the original recipe and class it up again. My scallop meal was delicious as was the key lime pie. But I am also disappointed the crust on the key lime pie changed. Good but not as good as it was originally. J ALexanders used to be my go-to place but now it is slipping in quality and a I am disappointed.
As a J Alexanders affiliated restaurant, this doesn't match up to the J Alexanders my wife and I enjoyed many years ago. I admit, it's been years since we were at one, so maybe our expectations were high. This place just didn't cut it. I thought the menu was lacking better variety. The soup selection was poor- two chicken options- come on mgmt! Pricing was ridiculous and it's not like I couldn't afford it, but $23 for an ahi tuna salad that had only 4 pieces of tuna! Ridiculous. Then the fish tacos we had were bland and they didn't even serve them with lime. Yet the entire kitchen staff was of Latino decent. I can't imagine them eating them without lime. Our waitress Bianca, was friendly and polite. I can say that about the service. The hostess however, takes two people and puts them right next to a party of 15. Never thought of herself to ask the customer where they would like to be seated. So I redirected her to another location more quiet.
Overall, not impressed and not returning again.
Had dinner there with my wife on a Wednesday night last week when it was winter weather outside. I'll cut to the chase...
Food = very good
Service = very good
ambiance (other than indoor temp) = very good.
So why did I give the whole experience only 3 stars? Because the indoor temp was just plain cold! Both my wife and I had to keep our winter coats on the whole time and we weren't the only ones who did...several other people in the dining room did the same. We asked our waitress twice to turn up the heat, she said she would. Twice during the meal she came by to say "we're working on it", but I sat next to the window where the heating vents were and the heat never kicked in. When the only thing you remember from dining out the night before was how cold you were, it wasn't a pleasant experience, which is what my wife and I discussed the next morning. I concluded that they purposely kept it at a low temp to motivate their guests to "get in and out" in about an hour...to promote turnover. Because of that, I feel manipulated and wont be going back. It's a shame because everything else was pretty good.
Have a friend I meet for dinner and this is our spot. Always have the same thing; Redlands salad and Prime Rib sandwich with extra crispy fries. Everything was cooked perfectly and the waiter was great. Told him we wanted to sit and talk so we were not rushed at all.
It’s a nice upbeat atmosphere and a lot of choices on the menu. Will return again soon.
We always enjoy the food at J. Alexander‘s and the bartenders are very nice as well. Dawn was very helpful and friendly.
Our only complaint that we have ongoing is that they only have a limited number of 4-top tables with chairs, and lots of booths, but the booths make you feel like you’re five years old - the tables are very high and the booth benches are very low against the table so that the edge of the table is near your mid chest and it feels awkward because your arms are up at high angle - perhaps the owners or interior designers of this chain are super tall people, but for most people I’ve eaten with at this location the booth benches are just too low. It makes one want to ask for a booster seat! So, even though it was Sunday night and we had a reservation we ended up sitting at the bar. Then because of all of that booth versus table searching the hostess forgot to check us in and as we were waiting for our entrees and I looked at my emails I got a note from OpenTable that we had not shown up for our reservation! Imagine that, I’m at the restaurant being told that I did not show up at the restaurant. They fixed it however so all is well.
We had the Chicken Milanese - always fantastic - a little bit of fried goodness with tender chicken, fresh tomatoes and some arugula and the filet mignon with bearnaise and a sub of the special roasted fingerlings with garlic cloves instead of mashed potatoes.
Food was quite good but the service was super slow. Our cocktails arrived 10 minutes apart. I ordered a second drink and it arrived after I had finished my meal. I declined it and the server offered a complimentary dessert. A nice gesture but I can't forget the terrible service.
