J. Alexander's - Redland's Grill - Northbrook Ratings and Reviews
Had dinner there with my wife on a Wednesday night last week when it was winter weather outside. I'll cut to the chase...
Food = very good
Service = very good
ambiance (other than indoor temp) = very good.
So why did I give the whole experience only 3 stars? Because the indoor temp was just plain cold! Both my wife and I had to keep our winter coats on the whole time and we weren't the only ones who did...several other people in the dining room did the same. We asked our waitress twice to turn up the heat, she said she would. Twice during the meal she came by to say "we're working on it", but I sat next to the window where the heating vents were and the heat never kicked in. When the only thing you remember from dining out the night before was how cold you were, it wasn't a pleasant experience, which is what my wife and I discussed the next morning. I concluded that they purposely kept it at a low temp to motivate their guests to "get in and out" in about an hour...to promote turnover. Because of that, I feel manipulated and wont be going back. It's a shame because everything else was pretty good.
Have a friend I meet for dinner and this is our spot. Always have the same thing; Redlands salad and Prime Rib sandwich with extra crispy fries. Everything was cooked perfectly and the waiter was great. Told him we wanted to sit and talk so we were not rushed at all.
It’s a nice upbeat atmosphere and a lot of choices on the menu. Will return again soon.
We always enjoy the food at J. Alexander‘s and the bartenders are very nice as well. Dawn was very helpful and friendly.
Our only complaint that we have ongoing is that they only have a limited number of 4-top tables with chairs, and lots of booths, but the booths make you feel like you’re five years old - the tables are very high and the booth benches are very low against the table so that the edge of the table is near your mid chest and it feels awkward because your arms are up at high angle - perhaps the owners or interior designers of this chain are super tall people, but for most people I’ve eaten with at this location the booth benches are just too low. It makes one want to ask for a booster seat! So, even though it was Sunday night and we had a reservation we ended up sitting at the bar. Then because of all of that booth versus table searching the hostess forgot to check us in and as we were waiting for our entrees and I looked at my emails I got a note from OpenTable that we had not shown up for our reservation! Imagine that, I’m at the restaurant being told that I did not show up at the restaurant. They fixed it however so all is well.
We had the Chicken Milanese - always fantastic - a little bit of fried goodness with tender chicken, fresh tomatoes and some arugula and the filet mignon with bearnaise and a sub of the special roasted fingerlings with garlic cloves instead of mashed potatoes.
Food was quite good but the service was super slow. Our cocktails arrived 10 minutes apart. I ordered a second drink and it arrived after I had finished my meal. I declined it and the server offered a complimentary dessert. A nice gesture but I can't forget the terrible service.
I like this place, but improvement is needed. This is the second visit in a month where my entree came incorrectly. The first time, a replacement entree was delivered within 7 minutes personally by a manager. Very good! Kudos. This last visit, my fish tacos came with fried fish rather than the requested grilled prep. Mayo was on the side as requested. It was 20 minutes later and my replacement order had yet to arrived. I had to seek out the manager who then said, "oh, I think is was just delivered." Someone should have stopped by and said "your order is taking more time than we thought. Can I get you something?" When the replacement order arrived, it came slathered with mayo (I had requested mayo on the side). The waiter recognized immediately that he made the mistake. I went to the front desk and asked for the manager. She was a young woman who reacted to the situation like a deer in the headlights. She hesitated in resolving the situation or showing sincere understanding. I noticed this and simply said, "I'm not paying for this meal." She seemed taken by surprise and said "sure." A properly trained person in authority would have been far more proactive in how to handle something like this. If you are a manager, you have to be more than just a young attractive man or woman who can handle things as long as everything goes right. Good restaurants with good staff know how to resolve issues when mistakes happen. It's not when things go well that matter, it's how they are handled when they don't. Everyone and every establishment makes errors. Training...training....training!
J. Alexander's is one of our "go to" places...close to home with reliably good food. Tonight was an exception as service was slow and difficult to obtain at times. Unfortunately, we were entertaining guests, so it was disappointing as well. Food, however, was good...Chicken Milanese, Salmon and Prime Rib, all delicious. Hope the service improves...
The order was incorrect. The menu was different than the entree delivered so a different entree had to be ordered which resulted in an additional significant wait. There was zero attempt on behalf of the waiter or manager to make things right by comping the 1 meal or even offering a desert! The waiter did not apologize and in fact was nowhere to be found. The second meal was also wrong but corrected. I have never experienced this lack of customer service and would not return unless something is done.
Nice menu. Excellent service from our server, George. I enjoyed a grilled cod entree with (believe it or not) some delicious couscous. My date had a salad which she thoroughly enjoyed. We each had a very reasonably priced glass of wine - a chardonnay and a cab - and shared a wonderful slice of heaven commonly known as Key Lime Pie. All in all, a wonderful dining experience.
