Izzy's Steaks & Chops - San Francisco
Food is very good. Operation partly perfect but there is also a young Spanish man working, who really still has to learn a trade. He often tries to be funny, talks a lot, doesn't listen to the customer and only tells his story. Sometimes even cheeky. Boss would speak to this man, but would be better off firing him.
I felt that the quality of the beef has gone way downhill. Had the ribeye and it was cooked as requested. We loved our waiter most of all but that is not enough reason to return. I want the overall experience to be great for the prices you charge. Everything else was acceptable but I am giving my money to Ruth Krist or House of Prime Rib going forward.
Really impressed. I had passed by Izzy's numerous times and always thought it looked a bit pricey for "just a neighborhood steak joint". But it's much more than that and deserves to be taken seriously as an alternative to the big downtown names. It's certainly more keenly priced than most of those; the quality of the meat (cut, preparation, etc.) was very good, the sides were generous and well prepared, and it's a truly old school space which manages to be a bit special without being at all stuffy. $20 corkage is an opportunity to bring something nice with you. And the service was absolutely first class: our server said he had worked there over 10 years and had as much enthusiasm and cheerfulness as he must have done on his very first day. Will be back!
Old school steakhouse with a classic "barbary coast" San Francisco vibe. Excellent steak with the best creamed spinach I've ever had. Sort of tight quarters and kind of noisy. Very accommodating for our lateness for the original reservation time. Great value for the quality and the service was top notch.
Our absolute favorite place to eat the top sirloin with house potatoes and cream spinach a must have.
Thank you Craig. We're pretty proud of our potatoes.
Always Izzy's. Always great! Never disappoints. Les serveurs est superbe!
Great food and great service! Can't be beat! Excellent New York Steak an Izzy's own potatoes are incredible.
Thank you Linda!
Everything was pretty good except our waiter. He was a bit surly and a bit deadpan. I don't expect or want a joyful happy go lucky server per se, but our server seemed a bit put out.
My husband and I are vacationing for a week in SF and we’re thrilled we found Izzy’s. Both our rib rye and grilled salmon were perfect, the drinks were a good pour and delicious, the ambiance was a mid level buzz and overall a very comfortable place to be. Mark made us feel like family and now has us hooked on their manhattans. We’ll be back for sure.
I ordered a filet cooked medium but received a blackened filet on the well-done side. I did not complain and simply ate it. It was dry and bland. The potatoes were ok but not the great potatoes I recall from previous visits. Two of my dining companions visiting from Europe were pleased with their meals. The fourth diner said it was not especially good but not bad enough to complain about. Will we return? Probably not, which is too bad as we have enjoyed this restaurant in the past.
Think this place has the best steak in town for the money. I've been to Harris', Ruth Chris, and Mortons. But, Izzy's is the place I come back to and bring guests.
Was able to get a Father's Day brunch reservation day off. My parents were in from out of town and the ambiance of was definitely something I thought my dad would LOVE.
The service was great and, as always, so was the food! I would definitely come back to Izzy's!
The hostess at Izzy's is the best, so friendly and capable! We really felt welcomed. Service at the table was generally quite good. Food - tops for this price range, as always. Creamed spinach, as always, excellent; and the NY strips a classic.
Service was excellent. Waiter was very knowledgeable and refreshed our drinks often.
If you want a high quality steak, by golly they have them. The potatoes and creamed spinach are to die for, though. Nice wine list, plenty of fairly priced bottles.
Of all the meat shops in town this is the most realistic and authentic. Very much a local's find with old time knowledgeable waiters and excellent bar tenders. The ambience of an old time saloon.
It's a good, old, traditional, steak house. Good ambiance and fun place for dinner. cremed spinach is the best!
The food was pretty good. I would rate it higher if the service was a little better, having someone come by more often if we needed anything --it took a while before our server came so we could order dessert.. Even though we (4 of us) were seated in a booth, it still felt as though the noise level was high. I also had mentioned the special occasion was a birthday for two of the four people there - a nice touch would have been candles on two desserts we ordered or some acknowledgment.
Took our out of town guests there. They are meat eaters, pure and simple. We wanted a venue that would be interesting to tourists yet not be obnoxious for locals either. Plates are not cheap but are well presented, traditional and very filling. Good meat too.
The service is great! Prime rib fabulous as is Issy's own potatoes--a must.
Had a great time as usual - charming and informative bartender, lively mixed crowd and good solid food. The creamed spinach is the best in town! Not the place for a diet, but great as a meat lovers treat.
Why in the world did the management put shorter tables in their booths? Why did they reduce booth capacity from 6 to 4 and make a party of 4 more crowded? Plus, they had to spend money on the new, shorter tables. Makes no sense. The management must not want their patrons to be comfortable.
Three entrees - Sirloin strip steak medium rare - done just right, excellent texture and taste; Marinated akirt steak - nice blend of flavors in marinade, good taste and the right amount of chewiness; Swordfish steak - a bit dry, but the sauce on the side was delicious; shared Key lime pie for dessert - not too tart as it sometimes is, just about right. Pleasant atmosphere, nice bar. Prices were very reasonable.
The marinated skirt steak is to die for!
The brunch is unbelievable!! $10 bottomless mimosas, and the servers make sure your glass is never empty! The food is excellent, and the service is always good. I would definitely recommend this place for any meal.
Food was very good and the service was very personable and attentive without being overbearing. Would return.
Excellent friendly service. Food was cooked to perfection and tasted great. Sides were delicious. Just a wonderful dining experience. Wine suggestion (Malbec from Argentina) was a great complement to the NY Strip, Filet and Prime Rib we had. Could not ask for more.
Loved the brunch! I have been there for dinner and the food is outstanding. Now, at brunch its the same thing. Food is great and service is good as well. Bottomless mimosas and beer! Couldn't ask for more! Thumbs up!
Love the food and atmosphere...... it's a good thing since you can't hear the person next to you talk.
I've been going to Izzy's for years and years. Love it!
The 20oz Ribeye and Swordfish were perfect! The diner also receives two sides items - I highly reccomend the Potatoes Izzy's style which is Au Gratin. The only reason I gave it 3 stars on service is becasue they forgot our appitizers. When speaking with the waitress it took her a couple times to remember it.
Overall it was very good food, the staff is friendly, and good for groups. I wouldn't recommend this place as a first or 2nd date - or for anniversary's. Very Loud and unromantic.
Izzy's is an historic landmark, per se. Hidden in the Marina near great shopping venues like Williams Sonoma, it's a great place to dine after a day of sightseeing and shopping. For locals, remember you can no longer just "pop in" for a drink or dinner. Reservations are a must. Overcrowding is one of the outcomes of the increased popularity. The booths (for 4) are impervious to neighborly chit-chat, but not so for the tiny tables for 2. Barely enough room to scoot to the inside seat, and you better like the conversations around you. Service is still quite good, despite the additional patronage. Generic alcohol is not-so-good; be sure to advise a favorite brand in your cocktail. NOT romantic, but wonderful steaks/prime rib.
Went there after a giants b-ball game with my buddy who was turning 50. Everyone in the bar was real friendly and after they found out it was his b-day we couldn't drink all the drinks everyone wanted to buy us. The appitizers were great, calamari and deep fried oysters...yum. The rib eye chop steak was the best I have ever had and I eat a lot of steaks. Izzy's is my new favorite place.
Classic steak house fare. Prime rib, creamed spinach and sides were fantastic. Crab cakes were disappointing but the fried oysters were a nice surprise. Pricey but not overwhelming. It's exactly what I want and would pay from at good steak house joint.
Izzy's always has good steaks. You can never go wrong ordering their rib eye steaks. Has a nice neighborhood restaurant / old San Francisco feel also.
If you like the feel for an older time San Francisco restaurant that serves good food without the faux-hipster wanna be location, then Izzy's is a great place.
Been to Izzy's at least a dozen times in the last year or two, for personal pleasure as well as business. Was shocked that my filet mignon had zero taste! Worst yet, I got an old time waiter there who has waited on me before and he is as helpful as a wet noodle. Went there this past Saturday for a special occasion and was a TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT.
Excellent prime rib; our party had it medium, medium rare, and rare - all perfect.
Waiter had a cool attitude about himself, which I loved. Was able to joke around with him about dinner and drinks and took his advice and ordered something for the first time and it was great.
Best steak house value in San Francisco.
