Last day of business after 25 years. Sad to see them go. My intro to sushi and many memories!
Excellent Sushi served fresh and beautiful and excellent service. We certainly will miss this true Japanese experience!
Sorry that Izumi's is going out of business after so many years of great food and service.
Best Japanese restaurant Milwaukee ever had. It's a damn shame the owners of some mediocre Asian fusion restaurant are taking over the space.
This was the best dining experience ever. I always get the izumi platter. This time around the server actually took time to describe the fish. Thank you for doing that. I also just fell in love with the seaweed salad. I thank my server for that.
I wish I knew the servers name. Unfortunately I do not recall her name. Thank you chef and server for a fantastic dining experience.
I am in the industry. Please continue doing what you do. BTW the bartender is awesome... see you next time.
First of all - the fish was fresh and well-handled. If you are local and are looking for a good-tasking meal, I would have no trouble recommending this place.
My problems were in a possibly overly-romanticed expectation of the omikase experience. I did some research on the Internet and found videos of omikase at various restaurants, with the chefs interacting with customers at the sushi bar, discussing likes, areas for exploration, one dish at a time, often with ingredients not on the standard menu.
I found text reviews that described much the same thing - initial discussion with the chef, course-by-course, with hot courses, cold courses, maybe pushing the customer to try some things not similar to what they like, but things they had not tried before.
We sat at the sushi bar, and watched the chef prepare maki and sushi and we were very patient. Then the waitress comes out and plunks down in front of me a platter - 10 different types of sushi from the regular menu, and 3 each tuna, salmon, and yellowtail sashimi, and a roll.
Chef didn't say a word to us before, during, or after the experience. We could have learned so much even if he had merely narrated the things he was doing. But he spoke to others in English- it was not a language barrier.
So, if you are going only for the food you probably will not be disappointed. If you are going so you can learn something, you might be.
Food was great, as always, but service was weak.
So delicious! The rainbow roll is always my go to when I go.
Nice dinner before a show at Collectivo, half a block away!
Izumi's never disappoints! This is my husband and I's go to sushi spot! We go here every year or our anniversary, or when we want to treat ourselves... Sushi is fresh and SO delicious. Already looking forward to our next visit!
My 52nd birthday!
Yuck. Rancid. Poor staff
A good bet if you like traditional, quality sushi - not drowning in sauces.
This is an original go-to for Japanese food and sushi. I found it hard to find something to eat in the menu. I guess I am not a sushi lover.
Poor service. Dirty bathrooms. Food was just average, but over priced.
I will not return to this restaurant.
We had a birthday dinner, the server did not acknowledge or do anything special for the birthday boy.
It is a great authentic Japanese cuisine where is the only restaurant in Milwaukee down town.
The food is very good and Sake is also very nice.
Always great food and service. Sushi is fresh and beautiful. Tempura and noodle soups fresh and delicious.
The sushi was fantastick and the service amazing. I heartily recommend this restaurant for any occasion.
Outstanding, friendly atmosphere - casual and sophisticated at the same time. Best sushi anywhere. Love this place, been eating here for over 20 years.
My siblings and I enjoyed our time there. We got the little room all to ourselves so that was very nice and unexpected. The food came fast and we all ate them in a flash.
I have been a patron of Izumi's since it opened in 1987. I am never, ever disappointed. The food, service, and ambiance are all outstanding!
Best Ramen on Thursday and honestly best sushi around. Nothing in the Midwest is as good as the coasts but this is as good as anything in chicago or here. Chirashi is solid I've had better but it's very good. Tuna tatare is good but a surprise is the wafu steak. Med rare and melt in your mouth delicious. The steak sushi reminds me of Peruvian food like tanta in chicago but better.
Great authentic Japanese food and sushi. Truly the best you can find in Milwaukee!!
Consistently amazing fresh and authentic Japanese food and sushi. Love the new fresh decor. Fun personal party rooms for groups.
Best authentic Japanese food and sushi bar. The quality is consistently high and service excellent!!!
Best sushi I've had in awhile and great service as well!
Always very good! I order the same thing every time and never disappointed. I like the chef's choice of sushi and exchange the maki for a handroll. Thank you.
I won't order their Thursday's Ramen anymore. It was pretty good like 2 months ago. I tried it last week, the broth is so thick, but no favor. The sushi is still good there but not the ramen.
Delicious sushi, fresh fish and consistently very good.
The grilled squid app is the best thing I've tried at Izumi's. It's simply amazing Umami goodness.
The beer, wine and cocktail selection is excellent! Great menu with brass tacks sashimi selections as well as specialty items for variety. The quality of the fish is excellent and the service was great for a busy Friday night. My only food issue was that the tempura
wasn't hot and there wasn't much variety of vegetables.
I had a great experience at Izumi's. Excellent food and atmosphere. Our server and all others with whom we interacted, were delightful. I will definitely return some day.
Go here if you have LOTS of time. They are always understaffed so service is usually poor even though the staff is knowledgeable and courteous. But it reached a new low last night when no one even gave us water or asked for a drink order for 25 minutes, and we finally got our appetizers after about an hour, but that was only because we made a fuss.
Authentic Japanese sushi
Izumi's was delicious and reasonably priced, a great date spot that won't break the bank
We have been to Izumi's many times The Sushi is always consistently good. We will be going back again.
Amazing authentic Japanese food and great service.
Great food and fabulous service provided by a friendly and attentive staff.
Not as good as expected by other reviews. Ago dofu was soggy and tasteless. Gyoza sauce was all wrong. Tempura sauce was wrong. Sushi was....these people do not understand sushi...poor rice, no understanding of the use of "wasabi," ..I suspected by the careless decor I might be in trouble. I was right.
I love love love Izumis! My parents have been taking me here since I was very little and I've been taking my husband here ever since we started dating! This place is a gem, to say the least. With a large menu that's very easy to follow, you'll never leave this place without feeling like you've have a fresh and delicious meal. My favorite part of the restaurant is the back room where you take your shoes off and sit on the ground. The members of the staff are friendly and always have a smile on their face! The bartenders are very helpful and accommodating to what you're looking to order. I recommend the lychee nut martini! Yumm!!
