Izumi's Ratings and Reviews
This was the best dining experience ever. I always get the izumi platter. This time around the server actually took time to describe the fish. Thank you for doing that. I also just fell in love with the seaweed salad. I thank my server for that.
I wish I knew the servers name. Unfortunately I do not recall her name. Thank you chef and server for a fantastic dining experience.
I am in the industry. Please continue doing what you do. BTW the bartender is awesome... see you next time.
First of all - the fish was fresh and well-handled. If you are local and are looking for a good-tasking meal, I would have no trouble recommending this place.
My problems were in a possibly overly-romanticed expectation of the omikase experience. I did some research on the Internet and found videos of omikase at various restaurants, with the chefs interacting with customers at the sushi bar, discussing likes, areas for exploration, one dish at a time, often with ingredients not on the standard menu.
I found text reviews that described much the same thing - initial discussion with the chef, course-by-course, with hot courses, cold courses, maybe pushing the customer to try some things not similar to what they like, but things they had not tried before.
We sat at the sushi bar, and watched the chef prepare maki and sushi and we were very patient. Then the waitress comes out and plunks down in front of me a platter - 10 different types of sushi from the regular menu, and 3 each tuna, salmon, and yellowtail sashimi, and a roll.
Chef didn't say a word to us before, during, or after the experience. We could have learned so much even if he had merely narrated the things he was doing. But he spoke to others in English- it was not a language barrier.
So, if you are going only for the food you probably will not be disappointed. If you are going so you can learn something, you might be.
Best Ramen on Thursday and honestly best sushi around. Nothing in the Midwest is as good as the coasts but this is as good as anything in chicago or here. Chirashi is solid I've had better but it's very good. Tuna tatare is good but a surprise is the wafu steak. Med rare and melt in your mouth delicious. The steak sushi reminds me of Peruvian food like tanta in chicago but better.
The beer, wine and cocktail selection is excellent! Great menu with brass tacks sashimi selections as well as specialty items for variety. The quality of the fish is excellent and the service was great for a busy Friday night. My only food issue was that the tempura
wasn't hot and there wasn't much variety of vegetables.
Go here if you have LOTS of time. They are always understaffed so service is usually poor even though the staff is knowledgeable and courteous. But it reached a new low last night when no one even gave us water or asked for a drink order for 25 minutes, and we finally got our appetizers after about an hour, but that was only because we made a fuss.
Not as good as expected by other reviews. Ago dofu was soggy and tasteless. Gyoza sauce was all wrong. Tempura sauce was wrong. Sushi was....these people do not understand sushi...poor rice, no understanding of the use of "wasabi," ..I suspected by the careless decor I might be in trouble. I was right.
I love love love Izumis! My parents have been taking me here since I was very little and I've been taking my husband here ever since we started dating! This place is a gem, to say the least. With a large menu that's very easy to follow, you'll never leave this place without feeling like you've have a fresh and delicious meal. My favorite part of the restaurant is the back room where you take your shoes off and sit on the ground. The members of the staff are friendly and always have a smile on their face! The bartenders are very helpful and accommodating to what you're looking to order. I recommend the lychee nut martini! Yumm!!
My husband was born and raised in Japan, and he was very disappointed about our recent dining experience at Izumi's. We have been customers of Izumi's since the early 1990s, and were shocked at how much the restaurant has deteriorated. It used to be when you were first seated, you would be presented with an "oshibori" (hot hand towel) and a pot of green tea. All of the entrees came with a bowl of miso soup, a fresh garden salad, and a serving of white rice. These standard features were missing at the new Izumi's. The teriyaki chicken that I ordered was fatty, and my husband's tempura was soggy. Lastly, the air conditioning didn't seem to be working which made the restaurant hot and humid. In short, we were very disappointed and will not return until it comes under a new & improved management.
Had a Wonderful experience. We came for a Birthday party of 12 people. The food was delicious, although a little expensive for some members of our group.
We had the usual issues a large party causes. Our food came out in stages, so some ate a full 15 minutes before others. It wasn't a huge issue.
Our server was very friendly.
Overall We had a very good time.
