The worse place ive been in a while
If you like japanese food, beer, and bacon, this is the place for you.
Great original japanese Place.
Very very very noisy. Would not return . Nice people work there. Food is too spicy hot
this is good place for a casual dinner. The food and service is good. The prices are very reasonable. I wonder about the quality of the ingredients based on how inexpensive the prices are. $4.50 for 3 shrimp or 3 scallops is really cheap. However everything was really tasty and well prepared. Service was helpful friendly and well timed.
Amazing place! The service was great and the food awesome as always
We were seated immediately, had lots of choices that were tempting, service was consistent and made sense considering what we ordered, for example, the more delicate tasting items came out first and the heaviest, the udon carbonara, came out soon after the avocado tempura which had a sriracha sauce on it. The meal took up just the right amount of time since we had to head out for a show. All in all, we will be back because there are more items we want to try on their menu.
Found this place after looking for something different to what we have back home.
It was fun, delicious, friendly and a great choice.
It was pretty busy for a Sunday evening, so I'm glad that we had a reservation.
The Tonkatsu Ramen was excellent. -- in fact, the best broth I've ever had for balance of flavor and richness without feeling greasy.
The Chicken Wings were addictive and the Scallops and Mushrooms were tender and sweet.
This is a must try but go with friends so that you can try lots of small bites
we love japanese food, & we've been wanting to try roku for a while. as a casual celebration of my hubby's birthday, he, my daughter & i enjoyed an excellent array of izakaya fare. we had small plates of skewers, onigiri, karaage, stews, shochu cocktails & beer, all so good that it was hard to stop ordering more, even after we were stuffed. the atmosphere was great--a little dark, busy but intimate, menu items posted on the walls.... only issue was the slow service as the night got busier. but we will absolutely be back.
Must have are the okonomiyaki and the grilled squid. Everything we had was amazing.
Only note is that I wish they had a dessert without green tea.
We enjoyed our dinner at Izakaya Roku. The food was excellent and service was attentive and prompt. We particularly enjoyed the Brussels sprouts, hamachi carpaccio, and green tea Panna cotta.
The curry tonkatsu ramen is particularly good. [Since I have to write at least 50 characters for this review]....my only "con" is the scallops lacked flavor so the bacon wrap overpowered the overall flavor.
The food was decent, but hardly amazing and the service was downright infuriating. Each dish, including our two mains, came out far apart. Specifically, the freshly fried squid main came out 15 minutes before the ramen, which didn't even have fresh noodles. Why would you make one of the two people at the table wait for the food to turn cold our eat entirely alone? The kitchen really blew it, and the wait staff didn't notice the problem or make up for it when they were notified. We won't be back, which is a shame, because the food was tasty.
I come here regularly. The sea urchin rice is amazing. Also love the onigiri. It’s low key, a good place to hang out with friends.
Felt like we were in Japan!
After reading all the positive reviews about Izakaya Roku, my friend and I decided to dine here on our trip to SF. We ordered the mochi bacon, shishito peppers, short ribs, scallops, chicken thigh, onomiyaki and the assorted tempura.
The shishito pepper dish was by far the best. The char on the pepper was perfect and the accompanying sauce was delicious. The mochi bacon was also flavorful and all that we expected it to be. The tempura was good and the portion was large. Everything else was just blah, nothing special.
Would I go back? Probably not since the only two dishes worth going back for are mochi and peppers.
Izakaya Roku is a lasting favorite. We always leave feeling we've had an exceptionally delicious dinner. Try the garlic rice, hamachi carpaccio, spicy gyoza hot pot, grilled brussels sprouts with anchovy and garlic, sashimi salad, grilled mackerel...you can hardly go wrong. Service is brisk and friendly. Great place to order copiously and share around the table.
for an izakaya it was reasonably priced for the SFBA. The grilled items such as the chicken, mochi-bacon, eringi, bacon wrapped asparagus and tomatoes, and kalbi were good. The grilled dish for mushrooms and scallops was excellent.
It's a cosy and casual place to grab a bite. The food and service was great. Noise level was perfect for having a conversation with your table without feeling like the next table can overhear you even though the seating is a little cramped.
Liked the non-sushi/sashimi options in Japanese cuisine - breakout experience for Yosemite who have never enjoyed Japanese curry!
The food was good, mostly. A couple of dishes were bland but the others were very good. But the service was TERRIBLE! We told the waiter we had a time constraint and he said he understood but we waited and waited for the last dish. He actually offered to give it to us to go, but that would do us no good because we were going to a music performance and couldn't take it with us. We wound up paying the bill and then sitting and waiting for the last dish, which a few of the group wolfed down. We BARELY got to the performance on time, and we should have had plenty of time.
Don't go here if you're in any kind of hurry. They just don't understand speed of service.
Great food and meal before seeing Hamilton ( walking distance to theater). Fun place to eat with friends. Highlights- uni and soft boiled egg and ramen salad. Would go back.
Yummy! One of the best Japanese Izakaya and Yakitori I've had in the Bay Area. Flavorful, well seasoned and served quickly. Absolutely recommended. Restaurant is very busy so make a reservation. About a 4 block walk from Muni.
Food was a bit mediocre considering the amount of good reviews it received. Ordered the kakuni and it was really tough and dry. Disappointing for a $75 meal!
Salmon mushroom wrapped in foil was good; karaage, tofu pot and grilled beef ordinary to below average; onigilly took a long time and was salty
Food was very fresh and prepared just right!
Service was great. We will return.
This place is amazing! Great service, great food and great overall! Been back here so many times! Always consistant and food has always been great!
Izakaya Roku is one of the best Japanese places that I've been to. Their skewers are great. Their curry is also amazing. I usually measure how good a Japanese place is from their curry. Some places don't even serve their curry with beef chunks or any kind of beef to put more flavour into the curry, and that just makes the curry bland. Unless of course if you're a vegetarian, then putting beef into the curry won't be a viable option.
Service was great. If I remember the name of the waitress, I would put it here. It's unfortunate that I don't remember.
One bad thing was that I ate there while there was an obnoxious loud group. Yelling and doing all those horse laughters like they own the place.
Other than that, I have no complains. Definitely will come back again. A good service could definitely get people to come multiple times.
The food here is fantastic and nostalgic from my time living in Japan. The sea urchin and soft boiled egg and yakionigiri are great. It took a while to get the attention of our waitresses toward the end, but it seemed as though they might have been understaffed, and they were always cordial and gracious when they were serving us. This place is worth checking out for a reasonably priced izakaya meal.
Not your typical Japanese fare. A good selection of grilled and cooked food with a selection of chefs specials to choose from. I had the Spicy Ramen which was quite delicious. I was most impressed with the service which was very attentive, efficient, and friendly. while the crowd skews younger, the atmosphere is pleasant and energetic! A terrific meal all around.
Great food. Very authentic. Easy seating.
Excellent presentation. Nice ambiance.
Soju was great
It was a pretty inexpensive izakaya with good flavors. The chicken wings alone are reason enough to come back!
Great food, convenient location, friendly staff. We were celebrating our 48th wedding anniversary and thoroughly enjoyed the dinner at Izakaya Roku.
We enjoyed our meal with our family! Would definitely dine here again!
Every single yakitori item, order them all and in multiples; you might not want to share because they're all good. I recommend a head nod bowing gesture in addition to the tip is a good way to go when you're done.
had a great time with my 20plus years friends and their wives. Enjoyed a lot and recommend as one of best Japanese restaurants in san francisco, especially for friends dining.
