Izakaya M Sushi Ratings and Reviews
Let me start off by saying that there are no problems with the food. In fact, I got the sense they have top of the line sushi chefs that are a cut above the competition. Also, they had a very large selection on the menu for a place this size.
That being said, here are the cons. Maybe it was just bad timing on my part:
- Tons of loud kids. At almost every table. Never seen that many families with kids in a place like this, especially on a weekend evening. It was extremely annoying and I felt like I was at a Chuck-e-Cheese. Like I said, maybe bad timing, but it seems to be a popular spot for families to bring their children for some odd reason
- Overpriced. I eat sushi twice a week on average, been to just about every high end sushi place in the valley and the west side, and for some reason this place is more expensive across the board.
- Staff was scrambling to service all the tables. They hung in there and luckily because of the size of the establishment it's hard for them to miss you if you're needing water or something specific, but they need more staff to give better overall service.
All in all, this place is not the right fit for me (I typically go alone or with a date), but if you want to take your kids and have a wide selection on the menu as well as premium sushi for yourself then it's a good spot.
I have been going to Izakaya for a couple years. I go several times a month and sometimes several times a week.
The food, staff, and service is excellent.
The only consistent complaint is the valet service that handles the parking behind the restaurant. This service also serves La Cava and the Coffee Roaster in the same block. I try to avoid this valet is specially but Street parking is often a problem and so occasionally I have to use them. They are the worst, they are heavy smokers and while they probably don't smoke in the cars the time they spend in the cars makes the car smell like smoke because their clothing reeks of smoke. In addition I just get a general uneasy feeling with them. The restaurant is good enough that I sometimes walk three blocks from where I'm able to find a parking space. It would however be best if they got a quality valet service.
We have been to this restaurant at least a dozen times and have found the food quantities and price to be very good, the service attentive and gracious. But they seemed to have a problem with Open Table reservations not making it on to their system and this has happened to us twice. So calling the day before to reconfirm is a definite must if you want to be sure your reservation made on Open Table will be honored. Happy hour is a real, great bargain here. Sushi and sashimi very low priced. An item of note is that the sashimi portions are generous but the fish is cut way too thick for sashimi. The chefs would find that the plate looks more filled if the fish slices were more like 1/4 or less inch thick rather than closer to 1/3 inch thick.
This may seem picky, but sashimi that is cut so thick is usually fish the seller is trying to rid itself of. Why not give six thinner slices rather than three thick slices? It will last a little longer, look larger on the plate and make the dish seem like an even greater deal.
The seaweed salad was completely saturated with oil and did not taste fresh. I saw the sushi chef pull it out of a large plastic bag before he plopped it on the serving plate - who knows how many days prior the mass quantity had been made! The rest of our dinner was made up of mediocre sushi and the bill was much higher than we expected, considering we go out for sushi at least once a month and ordered our usual amount of food and wine. We are not going back to this place anytime soon.
We frequent many different sushi restaurants, and this is one of our favorites. There is a large selection of items on the sushi menu and the quality of the fish is noticeably better and thus delicious. We sat at a table and our server was attentive without being intrusive and our sushi items were served quickly and presented beautifully. There is an extensive wine and sake list which we also appreciate. I also like that the restaurant is spacious and the tables are not crowded together.
Service was great. We came a little earlier than our reservation and were seated right away. We came during happy hour. We ordered a crazy roll, albacore sashimi, sashimi sampler, shrimp tempura roll, California hand roll, baked mussels, salmon collar, and robata sampler. The seafood was much better than the robata. I would pass on that next time. The seafood was really good and prices were great during HH.
Amazing food! The fact that they had chawanmushi on the menu was a huge perk for me, it seriously tasted the way my grandma made it, Japanese comfort food at its finest! Everything we ordered was delicious, their albacore sushi was so fresh and buttery soft. The sugar daddy roll was my personal favorite! Must order again!
I love going here for their happy hour, which starts at 10... Love their food and drink menu. We always get a pitcher of beer and pig out late night. Probably not good for my diet, but it's delicious. One of the best happy hour menus ever. The ambiance is hip, trendy and young but the noise level isn't too loud and crazy, which I love. I go here at least once every week or two weeks just to hang out, enjoy the food and catch up with friends. I would definitely recommend this spot to anyone looking for a cool hangout spot in the Sherman Oaks area. No need to go all the way to Los Angeles. This place is a gem!
It was lunch time and there were only 4 tables occupied, yet the staff was overwhelmed. One waitress asked if we had any questions. I asked whether the grill was working for lunch (they have Robata). She didn't understand. I repeated. She still didn't understand and didn't make any effort to have a colleague help. The rice that comes with a bento box was forgotten. Twice. Finally brought when we were almost finished. A sea urchin sushi came when we were ready to leave, after asking about it many times. I suspect it took so long because they had to defrost it (in spite of the waitress' assurance that it was fresh) and it didn't taste very fresh - we couldn't eat it. To their credit, they didn't charge us for it. The rolls were delicious, though the slices were so large that they were difficult to eat elegantly. The Robata pork belly was also very good though really heavy on salt. It was also very dark and chilly inside, on a lovely early afternoon. All in all, a disappointment ; the food was original and the rolls good but service and ambience really ruined it.
