About Izakaya Den
Izakaya Den is Denver’s popular Japanese gastropub, modeled after the lively after hours establishments found throughout Japan. The restaurant is located on South Pearl Street and is the second restaurant of the Kizaki brothers, founders and owners of Sushi Den.
The menu is arranged in a tapas style, serving traditional Japanese small plates along with dishes infused with international flavors and textures. The more traditional Japanese offerings include sashimi and nigiri, sourced from daily fish shipments from around the globe, along with dumplings and noodle dishes. The global cuisine experiments with a bevy of different flavors including unique items such as Grilled Panzanella Salad (jumbo lump crab, toasted focaccia, local goat cheese, pistachios, plum wine vinaigrette), Kobe Beef Sliders (seared foie gras, pomme frittes). Izakaya Den Ratings and Reviews
The food and service was exceptional. We had a waitress named Kim who was so knowledgeable about the menu that we let her pick the sushi for us. So glad we did! We tried some fish that we normally don’t think of and discovered some new favorites! Definitely the best sushi I have had in Colorado and I have had sushi all over Colorado (including Aspen).
My party and I were very disappointed in our dinning experience. Our server Rosco was awful. It took us 3 1/2 hours to eat. Every time Rosco left it would take him 40 minutes just to come back. They table next to us, which set the same amount of people, turned over three times. This was a very disappoint birthday experience.
Izakaya is a great restaurant and we have been before. The only reason I gave the ambiance a fair rating is because we went on Valentine's Day. It was extremely loud and the tables were very close together. I much prefer the restaurant on a normal service day. I will be doing a holiday the next day from now on. The service was good despite how busy they were.
This time I have to say we were disappointed with the service. We ordered several sushi rolls and asked them to be prepared with brown rice. The server then said, let me write that down so I don’t forget! The entire order arrived with white rice. We felt horrible asking her to remake the entire order so we decided to accept it as it was with white rice. We expected to see an adjustment to the bill (a comped roll or cocktail?!) to thank us for our flexibility but no, nothing. We left disappointed and angry for not being more insistent about our order.
Izakaya Den, like Sushi Den, is a top-notch restaurant. The food and preparation is exceptional, especially for Denver, CO. It is clear that the owners strive for excellence, if not perfection. As a woman diner, and on this occasion, dining with another woman, I find - and found on this occasion - that servers, hostesses, and the responsible restauranteurs are dismissive and not as caring/careful with "older" women dining on their own. On this occasion, we were given a table in the middle of the restaurant, even though we had reservations for a week in advance. There were tables on the perimeter of the space that looked to have a bit more charm and privacy, and looked to be more comfortable, and we were not offered one. Plus, our server, spoke very fast and seemed to be in a huge rush each time she engaged with us. I just want to convey that middle-aged women should not be treated this way. It is done so often, that I believe that this hopefully unconscious behavior is becoming more and more explicit, and it is suggestive of poor manners and behavior.
I was really exited to come here! We heard about the amazing ambiance and delicious food and that it wasn’t something we would want to miss! So we made a reservation on a Tuesday night at 7:30 for 4 people!
Like a lot of people say “You come for the food and come back for the service.”
The food was okay, most of it was pretty good. The Kobe Beef Roll was the only let down when it came to food. It came all ground up like ground beef not layered on top of the roll like it has at other places. Not very flavorful and not worth the price.
But we loved the Brussels sprouts, the spicy and the banana cream pie!
The service just wasn’t very great! She forgot my husbands drink, never checked up on us when we got our food and questioned us when we wanted to order desert towards the end of our meal, like she didn’t approve. And at the end of the meal she refused to split our check when we asked her to from the beginning. Over she wasn’t horrible but it just seemed like she didn’t care. She wanted to take our order and then get us out so she could leave.
Overall it was okay, we would come back and try again.
5:30 rez and they were not very busy - but seemed unsure where to seat us. One of us was using a walker and we were put in the farthest corner. Service was okay as server was given three tables after us nearly at once. His facial hair was unappealing.
Many of the menu choices seemed to contain jalapenos or other spicy ingredients. Beef Ribs were very chewy and had some gristle - not good. Beet Salad and Crispy Brussel Sprouts were excellent. Kobe Sliders had too much bun to the scarce amount of meat. Salmon was very good but could have used a sour element. Red Dragon roll was very nice.
We chose Izakaya as it was listed as one of the 5 best Japanese restaurants in Denver - but our expectations for Japanese tapas were not met.
Fresh, fresh, fresh sushi with a wonderful assortment of unique options from around the world. I've been many times and continue to be impressed with the quality of the food. It's a bit on the pricey side but the flavors are worth and and we'll definitely go back again. Try the bluefin belly...yum!
We always love Izakaya Den and this time was no different. The service was spot on, I dropped one of my chopsticks and before I could blink someone was bringing me a new pair. The fish is delicious, we always ask for the servers recommendations and end up with the most amazing, melt in your mouth, fish.
A fantastic place for dinner. My girlfriend and I had cause for a celebration and this was a perfect place. The food was finominal, although the servings were a little on the smaller side, but we certainly didn't feel like we paid too much. It is a very popular place so definitely make a reservation. All in all I'm definitely going back as well as recommending everyone give this place a shot.
Great food and mostly great service. The only reason they didn't get 5 stars was that, though we were seated nearly immediately on time for our reservations, it took about 25 minutes to get water (after we asked someone besides our server to bring some). That's just something so simple. I've worked at lower-end restaurants that emphasize bringing water and greeting guests within one minute of guests being seated. I think it was probably an anomaly because everything else was great and everyone there seemed happy. We let our server basically order what she recommended and it was delicious. We will definitely give them a second chance to get a 5-star review which I think they will.
So disappointed, as we heard so many great things about this place. This dinner was to celebrate my husband's birthday. The experience was incredibly lacking, and I was truly pulling for this place. Our server was overly taxed and left us hanging multiple times. After asking for a sushi menu 3 times, we finally got one. A water glass had lipstick on it, and it took our server 20 mins to bring us a new glass.
We got seated by the window in the front by the sushi bar where the last minute walk-ins are seated, which is strange since I made a "special occasion" reservation far in advance. We were seated right by the entrance to Sushi Den, so there were lines of people by our table - touching us as walked by - constantly. The sushi was good, but I had trouble focusing on the positives throughout the dinner due to the multiple distractions and forgetfulness of the service.
If I could do a birthday do-over, I would. I left there totally feeling like we weren't wanted, which is an icky way to feel leaving a dinner.
Not a place for a special occasion. I think this is more of a quick Tuesday evening sushi destination than a special spot, where service or restaurant placement is not a priority. We were truly treated as afterthoughts.
Waitress complained about her tip even though we tipped her extra prior to the bill. Also waited 30 minutes for cocktails. Not a friendly environment this time. Usually have a better experience. Also refused to make us a sushi we always order on a Saturday night.
