About Izakaya Den
Izakaya Den is Denver’s popular Japanese gastropub, modeled after the lively after hours establishments found throughout Japan. The restaurant is located on South Pearl Street and is the second restaurant of the Kizaki brothers, founders and owners of Sushi Den.
The menu is arranged in a tapas style, serving traditional Japanese small plates along with dishes infused with international flavors and textures. The more traditional Japanese offerings include sashimi and nigiri, sourced from daily fish shipments from around the globe, along with dumplings and noodle dishes. The global cuisine experiments with a bevy of different flavors including unique items such as Grilled Panzanella Salad (jumbo lump crab, toasted focaccia, local goat cheese, pistachios, plum wine vinaigrette), Kobe Beef Sliders (seared foie gras, pomme frittes). A gluten-free menu is also available along with a popular weekday happy hour from 5 to 6:30 pm.

Izakaya Den Ratings and Reviews
So disappointed, as we heard so many great things about this place. This dinner was to celebrate my husband's birthday. The experience was incredibly lacking, and I was truly pulling for this place. Our server was overly taxed and left us hanging multiple times. After asking for a sushi menu 3 times, we finally got one. A water glass had lipstick on it, and it took our server 20 mins to bring us a new glass.
We got seated by the window in the front by the sushi bar where the last minute walk-ins are seated, which is strange since I made a "special occasion" reservation far in advance. We were seated right by the entrance to Sushi Den, so there were lines of people by our table - touching us as walked by - constantly. The sushi was good, but I had trouble focusing on the positives throughout the dinner due to the multiple distractions and forgetfulness of the service.
If I could do a birthday do-over, I would. I left there totally feeling like we weren't wanted, which is an icky way to feel leaving a dinner.
Not a place for a special occasion. I think this is more of a quick Tuesday evening sushi destination than a special spot, where service or restaurant placement is not a priority. We were truly treated as afterthoughts.
Waitress complained about her tip even though we tipped her extra prior to the bill. Also waited 30 minutes for cocktails. Not a friendly environment this time. Usually have a better experience. Also refused to make us a sushi we always order on a Saturday night.
We had a great dinner here—the service was great and the food was awesome. Highly recommend the grilled octopus....liked it so much we ordered a second plate. It is more expensive than just a casual dinner out as we ordered several sushi and small plates, but you could have a cheaper meal with the ramen and a couple plates/rolls.
One of our favorite places to go...had a different experience than before tonight though...Ordered some hand rolls which one of them had a long hair that I ended up pulling out of my mouth. We called our server over since he was MIA for a while. Told him what I found, he ran off to talk to a manager, came back and tried to explain to me that the hair was on the “outside” of the roll...not the inside. I told him, I didn’t care because it was in my mouth! He said he would take it off the bill. Our second order was incorrect which he had to get remade...forgot our 3 miso soups that we ordered for an appetizer and never apologized for the delay. When it came time to pay the bill, there was no “thanks for coming tonight” or “have a great evening”....and picked up the bill before we left to give us a hint our time was up. So disappointed....
We went for our Anniversary.(#55) We always look for special places and were not disappointed. We were able to get one of two tables in the window on Pearl St. Could converse quietly and yet be able to watch the Sushi Bar action. My wife had the Sushi Platter and I had a dish of Yellowtail Collar. Both were excellent so we shared plates.
Our favorite Banana Cream Pie per Sushi Den was the perfect ending for a great evening out.
We came for our company holiday party, it was perfect! The service was amazing (thank you, Sesko!), the food was exquisite, and the atmosphere is very beautiful - classy but still relaxed. We had platters of sushi with the best fish in Denver, a wonderful steak, and lots of traditional appetizers. A wonderful evening, we will definitely be back.
We love Izakaya Den! Everything we have tried has been delicious and top quality. Especially the miso black cod! Our last visit to Izakaya Den was on a Saturday night...and it was LOUD...but it was a Saturday night and still very enjoyable. Looking forward to our next night at Izakaya Den!
We were very disappointed with the food at this restaurant. That is probably why it was not busy like it’s sister restaurant Sushi Den. We have eaten there a quite a number of times and always had a great experience. The service by GiGi was fantastic, too bad the food was no match for her service. The only thing good that we enjoyed was the Jalapeño Sashimi, ultimately it was the the crispy tuna that was terrible.
We have dined here a dozen times. I usually always order a salad or fish collar for an appetizer or dinner. Tonight I orders both a said and fish collar, and my salad came out 20 miniutes after all the other guests at our table, and the main meal - the collar - came our another 25 miniutes after the guests received thier entrees. The waiter neither took responsibility or offers an apology for it being so late. We were going to the Lady gaga event and arrived at the restaurant very early at 6pm for an event that was starting at 8:30pm. I got my food about 10 miniutes before we had to leave for the show and it took over an hour to get my meal. The five other guests at our table did not have any delays. I was very disappointed being a repeat customer
As always the food was delicious. The service was not. Starting with the host who forgot he sets the tone for the evening. But then the waiter just seemed to be overwhelmed by (I believe) the 2 tables he had (which were the last 2 tables still eating at 10:30 (we sat at 7:50)). The food came out when it was supposed to but we could never get everything we needed, when we needed it. For example, fresh plates were requested after a squid ink plate. The sushi platter arrived shortly after they took away the dishes but we had to wait for -about 15 minutes for fresh plates, another 5 for chopsticks (and by this time, the dining room had emptied out). Drinks were hard to come by. Didn’t expect that kind of service from this used-to-be exquisite dining experience. And shouldn’t really have had to!
We enjoyed an excellent dining experience at Izakaya` for a Family Birthday Celebration with 6 of us seated upstairs among the finest ambiance which likened to a garden setting among the tall foliage trees that lent itself well to quiet conversation among our group. We began with the small plate menu and a number of dishes to share as appetizers. We especially liked the Mico Black Cod , Salmon Sashimi with truffle oil, the Nigeria and Kobi Stuffed Roll were great, and the Lobster Ramen Bowl with the Kinpira Salad for a main course was awesome. The service was excellent with our fully informed Waiter, who was attentive to every detail, articulate and very polite in every respect. The wine, beer and mixed drinks were great. We truly enjoyed a 5-Star Dining experience that ranks among the finest in Denver and we will be back soon.
We’ve always liked the ambiance of Izakaya Den but hadn’t been a while so went for a family birthday. I feel like much hasn’t changed from their menu-wish they would switch it up once in a while. Lots of tables nearby with people talking loudly. Our waitress was very very nice but at one point early on disappeared for a while and we were wanting our drinks we had ordered and to order appetizers. Kind of a bummer.
I had been wanting to try Izakaya Den for a long time because we love Sushi Den. We rarely venture out of our our Highlands/Lohi/Downtown area for meals out, so I was excited we actually made it here the weekend after Thanksgiving. We ordered ramen, gyoza, nigiri, and some sushi rolls. Everything was good, particularly the nigiri, until our two rolls that cost almost $40 arrived. Our server recommended them and they were not at all what we expected - messy and flavors that did not make sense. To make matters worse, I swallowed a bone in one of the pieces of salmon. The server brought the manager over who offered to speak to me again if I required medical attention. I obviously didn't think that was necessary, but wanted to let someone know. Overall, we spent $120 on lunch and they could not even take one $18 roll off our order that could have caused harm. I may go back to Sushi Den in time, but not Izakaya based on service. We'll stick to Sushi Sasa and our other sushi restaurants for now on.
I absolutely enjoyed myself at Izakaya Den. The atmosphere was sophisticated yet trendy and casual at the same time. Our service was excellent, and the food even better. I asked a friend from Denver, "what's the best sushi in town?" and their response was "hands down - Izakaya Den." And they weren't wrong!
Excellent food, as usual, but not the best service. While our server was very good - when we saw him! - he was the lone server for a large section of the restaurant and was just stretched too thin. This resulted in a long delay to get his attention to rectify an error, and long waits between ordering various courses. This is the THIRD time recently that we have experienced the same issue with there being too few servers! This spoils the whole flow of the dining experience and evening out. Management needs to employ more servers if standards are to be maintained.
