Izaka-ya by Katsuy-ya in Manhattan Beach Ratings and Reviews
We were here for the first time on a Friday evening. The sushi is excellent and very fairly priced, but the service was slow. It took about 20 minutes to get an extra order of sushi roll. Eventually the manager noticed us sitting there and asked if we needed anything. about 5 minutes later the order showed up. It was also very noisy, lots of kids running around. Next time we'll do take out.
Overall this place is good. Not great. Been to better sushi places. It's in the middle of "Manhattan Row" so it's considered a hot spot. The sushi is good. Fresh, presented well and tasty. For two the bill was $85 with tip for 5 rolls and 4 alcoholic drinks. Not bad at all. The Proscutto roll (spelling) was bomb. The izikaya roll was bomb too. Only knock was that the waitress would continually just walk up and interrupt us while in conversation. No excuse me just "want dessert", "want another drink" boom! Place wasn't that crowded for a hot summer Friday night but we sat down at 8:45. We also made reservations. This is a must here because you never know when it'll be super crowded. Have to pay metered parking but only until 9pm then it's free. Worth trying once then make a decision for a second time around.
Went for lunch with my husband and son. We were seated promptly. We all had the sushi lunch and shared the spicy tuna on crispy rice. That dish was delicious. We all enjoyed our lunches. My son and I chose the tempura and my husband had the udon. The tempura was perfectly light. The udon was fantastic. Service was friendly and fast.
We celebrated my teenage daughter's 16th birthday recently with 5 teenagers and 2 adults. It's a tiny restaurant but they accommodated us nicely. The wait staff was great at making suggestion for a comprehensive order that provided a nice amount of food, without going over the top and met everyone's tastes for various types of sushi. They finished off the meal with a birthday dessert. I love the neighborhood, friendly feel of this place and all of it's staff!
I will start by saying the fish dishes were well prepared and used very high quality ingredients. Unfortunately there must a trick that locals know to ordering here. We came in with a reservation, sat down, waited a while as the place was pretty busy but ultimately ordered an appetizer for my wife and me, entrees for the two of us and an entree for our daughter. My wife's appetizer came (beef potstickers) and it was OK. My appetizer did not arrive which I will detail below. My daughter's entree (soba noodles and chicken - again was OK.) My wife's entree arrived as well and it was a pretty good whitefish dish. My appetizer had not arrived nor did my entree. When my wife was done with her entree and our daughter almost so, my entree arrived. It was a cerviche that was very good fish. After I finished that, what I thought was my appetizer arrived which was another very good fish dish whose name escapes me - long after my wife and daughter were done eating. Why I say there is a locals secret is that a family of locals sat next us, ordered several things and got their food relatively quickly and in what appears to be the correct order. The server was modestly apologetic and said they discounted one of the dishes. This may or may not have been true as I did not see any discount on the bill. In any case, while the fish was very good the other dishes were ok but it is not a place to which I would return.
Perfect sushi dinner. Great service (thank you Bruno),delicious food and quick. During one night layover in Manhattan Beach, we were almost too tired for dinner. This spot was perfect. Made our evening. Server recommendations were wonderful. Wish we were locals so could be regulars!
Izaka-ya by Katsu-ya is a great little restaurant near the pier in Manhattan Beach, but you pay for it. The food is varied and tasty. The ambiance is lovely, bit it's a little hard to enjoy because the place is loud because of all the other people enjoying their meals and drinks.
I've enjoyed other Katsuya locations and didn't have high expectations for this one. That opinion was was based on the tired looking décor and fierce competition in the area. BUT, after enjoying dinner there, I've changed my mind. The service was excellent, as was every dish we ordered. The quality of the food and presentation were perfection. Even though it was a very lively (noisy) crowd, we were so pleased with the food that the noise won't affect my decision to go back -- which I will. Wish I hadn't waited to so long to give it a go!
Took my wife here for her birthday a few months ago and although the food was good the service was very lacking. Went there for Mothers Day to try it again and the service was even worse.
We go out for sushi a lot but haven't come here because of the wait typically and it's a little pricy for the portion size but we don't mind paying for high quality food. Well this time we had a few servers come around after a couple minutes to start off our order. It was busy but nothing crazy so it shouldn't take forever to get plates out.
Our crispy tuna took about 20 minutes to come out and was cold by the time it arrived. The sashimi apps were delicious but we ordered a spring roll too and it took about 45 minutes to get out to us despite us asking our server and others working there over and over to see what the holdup was. After a while the server wouldn't even make eye contact with us as we kept asking them if we ever get our dish. Frustrating to say the least, especially with having a baby there with us we would have liked to get in and out of there in under an hour and a half. Not joking we asked 3-4 different people to check on it for us and nobody could help get us a stat order of it.
You'd think that when the bill came and they saw how frustrated we were they would have at least comped that roll but no. My wife actually ended up voicing her displeasure and suggested it and he eventually did but only after we brought it to their attention.
Too many other places around with good sushi for us to want to come back here which is a shame because the quality of sushi is really good.
Great food, very delicious; really good for the price. It gets really busy due to the demand of really great food so save yourself the wait and book a table via their website, now for the food; the lunch box and sushi lunch specials are a must. It gets a little crowded and noisy so just a heads up. Other than that it is great for when you want to stop by for some sushi with your significant other, friend, family member etc. Most definitely coming back here again soon.
I enjoyed the food, but unfortunately my overall dining experience was subpar due to the rude and unprofessional waitstaff (except for one server who was exceptionally attentive and personable). Everyone from the hostess to the servers created an uncomfortable atmosphere during the quiet lunch hour. This restaurant may have the Katsuya brand attached to it, but be forewarned that it does not live up to the standards of other Katsuya restaurants . In the future I will be enjoying my miso cod and crispy rice spicy tuna at another location.
Some of the best (if not THE best?) sushi we've ever had. The specials were all incredible, artfully cut, and balanced in flavor & texture. We had a dungeness crab roll that blew our minds. Also, our server--a young fellow named Bruno--was tremendous. Speedy but well-paced when necessary, kind and upbeat. Last note is that when we walked in the door we were mildly surprised that the somewhat modest space would live up to the reviews we'd read online & heard from friends... but the food & service were undeniably top-notch. Could not recommend this place more.
Having been to original Katsuya in the valley many times I expected that at least the dishes they have become known for would be good. I was wrong ! The crispy rice spicy tuna was soggy and barely cooked on the bottom. This was very surprising.
Next was the seared tuna with mustard. The mustard should have accented the flavor and not been a huge amount to over power the dish. We could eat it and left it uneaten
We finally had to get the bill and go across the street to eat the rest of our dinner
This must be where katsuya trains its chefs before they can go to one of their real restaurants
I would sincerely say stay away
The food delivery was spaced out over 30 minutes. Food delivery came about every 5 minutes with someone's meal. No one in my party of 4 ate at the same time. Then rice was delivered about 10 minutes after we finished our meal. The waiter never checked in to ask if we needed additional drinks or if all was ok. The food was great and the service nice but may have been overworked.
One of my local favorites and I'm sad when I have to go to another sushi spot. The creamy Shrimp tempura on Spicy Tuna roll is the best roll ever. Sushi is always fresh and top grade compare to other sushi restaurants. Make sure you book a reservation in advance as it does get packed.
Favorite Dishes: spicy Tuna on crispy rice, miso cod, tuna with crispy onions, toro tasting
Izakaya is a true favorite of mine in the South Bay for sushi. The fish is always really fresh, and the dishes are usually amazing!!
I had the worst service there Saturday night however. We waited so long for every dish we ordered. And then each time the server came back to our table, he brought back with the wrong dishes or drinks.
Also, more than half of our order was forgotten along the way. We sat down at 8:30 pm and didn't really eat until 10pm. We were hungry and really annoyed.
When I mentioned all of this to management they acted like there was nothing they could do. Very disappointing for such a high end restaurant.
For years, Sushi Katsu-Ya in Studio City was my favorite sushi restaurant -- and for more than just sushi. I called it a "poor man's Matsuhisa," because Chef Katsu and his team consistently provided delicious, beautiful, creative dishes. With the memories of those meals in my mind, I was sorely disappointed by the adequate food at this corporate outpost of the Katsu-Ya empire. Especially sad: The warm King crab hand roll at Sushi Katsu-Ya is transcendent. Here, it was not made from a beautiful crab leg; it was made with a sad mix of real crab and fake Krab. Sigh. The only dish that lived up to the original restaurant was the seared tuna with crispy onion. Otherwise, skip this place...
