One of our favorite restaurants. The food is always excellent, and the service is friendly and good. BYOB is always a plus.
I can’t believe I waited so long to try this place! It really is a gem! Our party of five was blown away with the first bite of chips and salsa. The meal only got better. The octopus salad was one of the best, if not the best I’ve ever had and the mole was exceptional!!
Had my birthday dinner with friend December 8th. Great food and service. Will be returning.
Not the usual list of Mexican dishes but, wow, each dish is wonderful, flavorful and doesn't feel like it has been sitting on a steamer table or just the tired old same thing.
Dined with a party of four. Service was very good. The quality of the food was good, but we were all so disappointed with the Chef’s heavy-handed use of sugar in dishes that shouldn’t have a sweet profile - e.g., the green tomatillo salsa that arrived at the table with chips was super sweet. A surprise, and not in a good sense. Mole would have been super tasty if not for the too-sweet taste. It would serve the kitchen well to turn down the volume on the sugar. It’s not typical, nor expected in Mexican cuisine.
What a gem! Amazing food and a neighborhood gem! The octopus was delicious and a bonus is that it is BYOB.
First visit for a group of 4. Birthday dinner on a Friday night and everything was extremely enjoyable. Everything we tried was fresh, delicious and flavorful. A smaller menu with interesting choices, not the typical taco, enchilada and burrito fare. Service was very good and the space was relaxing and comfortable. BYOB kept bill very reasonable. Will definitely go back soon.
The menu changes with the seasons. So many reasons to love this place. Oh, and BYOB!
CONSISTENT AND REALLY YUMMY. CHEF ALWAYS HAS A CREATIVE, DELICIOUS MENU. WAIT STAFF IS FRIENDLY AND NEVER OVERLY ATTENTIVE. A GREAT PLACE TO DINE.
Outstanding food and service. Everyone is very helpful. Meal service is timed well.
Food is delicious and freshly made. Love Ixcateco Grill!
Great food at reasonable prices! If you want a drink, it’s BYOB.
Great food. Friendly & helpful service. BYOB makes it even more affordable.
Simply a best value in Chicago. Great mole from a Rick Bayless protégé. Also care and creativity in the ensalada pulpo. The rack of lamb with black mole is complex and outstanding as are the camarones and avocado with linguini. The pastry chef is also from Frontera and does a light yet very satisfying tres leches cake. One waiter is an artist who painted many of the artworks and colorful walls. Probably the most reasonably priced top-quality upscale Mexican food in Chicago!
The food was wonderful, especially the asado and the pork loin. But perhaps the star of the show was the house salad which I would buy by the tub if I could.
Service was very gracious and patient. The waitress made excellent suggestions.
Food was excellent. One of the top BYOB places that I have been to in a while
This was our second visit to this friendly, warm spot with a fantastic take on authentic Mexican cuisine. Our dishes were bursting with complex and delightful flavors. Everything was at the same high level as our first visit several months ago, and the BYOB option keeps it in the highly affordable category as well.
This place has amazing food and the value is great. The only thing I would recommend is don't think you are here for a quick in and out dinner as their service does take a little longer but I like that because you can spend longer in the restaurant and enjoy yourself.
What an amazing gem! Northside prices for downtown quality from the star chef and long time student of Rick Bayless. BYOB makes it even more reasonable. Staff is knowledgeable and rightfully beaming with pride over the menu, the team and everything they have put together. I've already been back and will be again.
Delicious, fresh, authentic Mexican food. Cute, cozy atmosphere and BYOB. Great brunch - try the coffee with cinnamon, yum! Beautiful food at a wonderful neighborhood spot.
The service was friendly, attentive, informative, well paced and contributed to an excellent experience. The gentleman that opened our wine was very good and fun. The rack of lamb special, the pork loin and the shrimp were the favorite of the table and the mole with every dish was deep, rich, smooth and delicious. The other favorite was the octopus salad and the guacamole starters. We can't wait to visit again and we all thought the value compared to the quality and portions was fantastic. Plan ahead as you might drive around a bit to find parking but there is available free parking on the side streets in the neighborhood.
Always friendly and welcoming. Excellent food and very BYOB friendly. One of our favorite places in the city.
We loved this place! The waiter was charming and the food was delicious!
The food was absolutely fabulous, and tres leches cake was to die for. Service was good albeit a little bit slow as there was only one waiter (the place was busy for a Tuesday night). Owner came out to ask how our meal was and was genuinely interested in our feedback.
Wonderful place--we will definitely be back to try everything on the menu.
Best Mexican Restaurant in the area. High quality food. Great service.
Mole and More. Nothing trendy or hip but the food is terrific with everything fresh and flavorful. This BYO charmer showcases seriously delicious food in a bare bones setting.
We waited 35 minutes after our reservation time to be seated. The servers were clearly overworked. It took a few requests to get wine glasses. It took a couple requests to get a steak knife.
Everyone was polite and apologetic, but the wait time and service was still an issue.
LOVE the food and the staff is great but seems a bit disorganized since our last visit??
Front of the house could use a little help and then I think this place would be in the outstanding category!!
I hate to even write this but I'd wouldn't go back. The service was slow like a turtle and we had all night to burn. They ran out of margarita mix mid meal and we still had over half a bottle to kill between four of us. We went out for beer and was told that they would store it in the fridge while we ate. It was difficult getting one when we wanted it. They didn't have enough menus for all the patrons at the restaurant so we shared one between four of us. No buser so getting water or extra napkins was tough and then the final moment was when our server slipped and fell next to us and hit his cheek on our table. I felt terrible for the poor guy, I'm sure he had a nasty bruise the next day.
The food and service here is excellent. These people know how to cook. We had guacamole, a salad, and the vegetarian entree, and all were excellent. It's a BYO restaurant, making it a very economical dining option.
Wonderful authentic food! We drove in from the suburbs twice in a month to savor the flavors.
The food was outstanding.
Really enjoyed our girls night. Great BYOB. $23/person = great value for terrific food!
This was our second time at Ixcateco. They seemed to be a little slow or possibly surprised to be so busy on a Tuesday evening. The food was good but the wait was longer than it should have been. We'll go again but maybe over the wknd when more staff is scheduled.
The food was delicious. What a great find. One of the best Mexican restaurants in Chicago by far. The mole, shrimp, and the grilled octopus are must haves
My husband pulled out an article in the weekend section of the newspaper at the beginning of the year. He misread and thought it was another Rick Bayliss restaurant but in fact is a former chef of Frontera and Topolobango. Wood fired entrees and appetizers, small memo but excellent choices. It is BYOB which makes for an economical meal along with outstanding food and reasonable prices. Our server Dee was great. Went on a Thurs. evening, good number of tables occupied, street parking. Will definitely return.
Wonderful meal! We tried a few appetizers (guacamole and octopus) and both were fantastic. Yes, who doesn't like guacamole but this was a bit different than the norm and really good. The octopus was a must try if you go!
Then we all split 4 entrees (pork, chicken, salmon and beef) and plantains and all were very good. The sauces are so flavorful, the sides tasted good and complemented the meal.. just a great meal. Everyone enjoyed the food. We also had a great server. Only reason ambience score isn't as good is b/c the lights went out for a short bit while we were there and it was a bit too warm inside, however, this did not deter from the great meal. Would definitely go again!
Creative menu. Friendly staff. Accommodating to vegetarians. Delicious. BYOB
A standout among many very good local Mexican restaurants - not "haute", but very good attention to detail, excellent moles, BYOB a plus - reservations recommended, as this is a (justifiably) very popular spot, especially on weekends.
