Ivar's Salmon House Ratings and Reviews
I love the ambiance of the restaurant. The decorations are great, and I love the view! The food was for the most part really good. The clam chowder and crab bisque appetizers were wonderful but we felt a bit rushed when the main courses came out before we even finished our last bites of soup. In our party of four the main courses were a hit except for one person whose halibut came out a bit dry. But everything else was great! And the dessert was fantastic, too! My only real criticism is with the service. Our waiter came and asked us for our order almost as soon as we sat down and when we asked for more time he immediately rushed away again. He didn’t really review the menu with us or talk about the specials. When asked a question he did answer our questions but seemed to have a subtle attitude with his responses. Overall it was a great experience though and we all really enjoyed our meals.
Service was not friendly, helpful, knowledgeable about the menu or even interested in our table. Food was average but not on par for the location, building or price. Cocktails were above average but not top notch.
The main restaurant and bar building were northwest lodge with a good layout, relatively quiet and a good view of Seattle downtown and space needle.
I'd look for other alternatives before returning to this place again.
Iconic restaurant with a beautiful setting on Lake Union with views of downtown Seattle. Décor is a museum of local native artifacts and history. The food focus is on regional Pacific NW favorites, especially seafood. Overall, looking a bit tired, worn and well-used.
If you want your salad course served at the same time as your main entree it's fine, but it's unacceptable when you're paying this much for food. Maybe our server was new. She also didn't bring utensils for taking apart my wife's crab legs. When she did, she brought a pair of small tongs, so I had to grab a bus boy to get help with the situation. She never apologized for the mix up. Food was a step up from nice buffet quality-- good, but not great. You're mainly paying for the location.
Food was decent but not great. My seafood medley tasted like it had been out of pot for a while. Service was horrible. Our server had a bad attitude. We asked to replace our utensils since they were dirty and she was not happy about it. She also literally handed me my wine instead of setting it on the table. There were four of us and we all felt she was rude. We saw that other servers were nice and “normal”, not neurotic like ours. So maybe we were just unlucky.
Great food and quiet atmosphere. We were visiting from out of state and were looking for great local food. Sat by the windows and had a great view of the bay. Service was very good and we did not feel rushed at all. If we return to Seattle, we will definitely come back.
Overall the experience was good. The hostess was wonderful, conversant without being overly chatty. I was very disappointed, however, not to have been offered a birthday dessert. I and my friends have been celebrating birthdays at Ivar’s for years and this is the first time no cake or muffin or other birthday dessert was offered. It was clearly my birthday, as I indicated it in my MyTable reservation. Is this a new thing?
Once again Ivar's Salmon House comes through for a special birthday occasion, or it could have just been everyday lunch. Same great selection of food and attentive service with the best view of the Space Needle in town: in the distance without all the new construction blocking the view. My "go to" place to treat friends.
It was the worse dining experience in quite some time. I was grateful for the view of Seattle across Lake Union, but that was it. The rest of the experience I rate as outright awful. The wait time was excessive - 45 minutes to be seated. We were told it was because our reservation time was 715pm. When we were seated at 725pm, four tables were available in the area were we dined, and across the dining room there was open table after open table. The food was terrible. The price for the food, excessive. Service was reasonable, but the poor individual was in training with no support from management. I will not return until they change owners, or something amazing happens to the place. This is unfortunate, as I have been a patron of the place for 35 years.
Disappointing! Even with a reservation, we had to wait 10-15 minutes for a table in a dark corner. The room was poorly lit with yellow lights. The server was clearly overburdened with 6 tables, including 3 large parties of 8 to 12. We never received our child’s beverage. Final straw was tough razor clams, which shouldn’t be on the specials if they can’t be prepared correctly. We’ve had better, notably at Chinook’s. Rather go there.
We’ ve come here many times over the years.
The food was the problem. We love razor clams, not the ones we got. They were like rubber - old tires, and the breading was awful - it seemed to be rancid. Our server was fine, although she was stretched pretty thin. It was my wife’ birthday and she was also disappointed with the food. Our enjoyment was with family members. We probably won’t be back for celebratory meals.
The six of us had a variety of meals. Fish and chips were excellent, and everything else was very good also; the exception was the Shrimp Louie, which was a serious disappointment. It had the very smallest shrimps possible, and they were all without flavor entirely. We also had good desserts, celebrating a 50th birthday for one of our number.
This Seattle landmark has been a regional favorite for decades. As a child, we enjoyed special occasion meals and always a tasty meal before University of Washington football games. We still do.
The service is excellent - the food is always fresh and the ambiance is second to none. This is my go-to-happy-place before UW football games! GO HUSKIES and thanks Ivar's for making memories.
Love this restaurant! Brought someone from NYC who was in town to give a presentation and she loved it. Great food, great ambiance, great wine with dinner. We had a very enjoyable meal sitting by the window. The moon was rising and the lights over Lake Union were beautiful. If I'd been on a date it would've been even better, but as it was, I was glad to be able to bring someone from out of town to a place I love, and they felt the same!
The service in the bar with Margo was fabulous. The service in the dining room was fair. Waiter was not overly friendly ( Brian ) and had to be asked to bring bread for the mussels and tarter sauce for the fish. Desert was very overated. Fruit cobbler. Dissapointed since I took my boss from Denver. The waiter was given an exceptional tip however.
I enjoyed everything: the location, the service and the food. The atmosphere recreates a northwest native-american setting: lot of wood, tribal masks, canoes hanging from the ceiling... It goes without saying: everything is around salmon. Well, almost, since we also tried the seafood medley which was really tasty. The salmon chowder is to die for. I really loved the lavender butter served with sourdough bread and homemade cornbread.
We asked for a table with lake view and we enjoyed our dinner looking at the sun setting behind Seattle's skyline.
Three of the four entrees were excellent but the "Northwest Seafood Platter's" breading on the clams and prawns was soggy and fairly tasteless. Other than that and the noise level which made it difficult to converse easily, our experience was highly satisfying.
