About Island Breeze Luau at the King Kamehameha Hotel

Guests of the Island Breeze Luau will be amazed with a display of authentic Polynesian activities, cuisine, and performances.

Island Breeze Luau, located in right on the edge of the ocean of the King Kamehameha Hotel is rated the best lü'au on the Big Island by kama'äina (local residents)visitors and travel writers. The luau begins with a lei greeting and picture taking. An open bar, arts and crafts await you. The imu (traditional underground oven) ceremony, is also a part of the exciting beginning to your Island Breeze ohana (family). There are many ways to participate in the luau activities: weave a coconut frond, learn how to open a coconut, learn the art of hula, get a Polynesian tattoo, and take the time to meet and talk to some of the performers.

A "luau" inside an air-conditioned ballroom. For the nearly $100/person price, you can't even get a decent drink. The Mai-Tais were made with fake syrup, not even real juice... After an awful one, opted for a beer, but they didn't even serve up a local brew... Just Bud or Bud Lite. Ew. How about some wine?... From a giant plastic bottle. Coffee? Bleh. Sat on the heat too long and tasted burnt. My kids wouldn't touch the"fruit punch". Food was bland and generally overcooked. The dancers and musicians were phenomenal- but the hotel is just out to take your $$$.

We visited Kona over Christmas and went to the Island Breeze Luau at the King Kamehameha Hotel. It was a great meal followed by a great show. The buffet had food for everyone including my 8 year old. He loved the show as well. This is a great outing for the whole family.

There are a few Luau's to choose from on the Big Island, and I believe this one is rated the best. For what it is, I would say the did a great job getting people excited, teaching you some of the cultural aspects of Hawai'i, and having a good meal. The day we went there were threats of storms so everything had to be moved inside. This took away from the ambiance and we had to wait for 45 minutes, but nothing could be done about it.

If you have never gone to a Luau, then I definitely recommend. I do not see the value in going more than once.

Four of the six of us were from overseas. Since they had never been to a Luau they found the dancing and music enjoyable, and the food good tasting. My husband and I had attended a Maui Luau a few years ago, and It was really outstanding: before anyone sat down, we could tour the grounds, look at and learn about the imu ceremony, learn about the old Hawaiian crafts, learn about the historic dress and meaning, the history of the Hawaiian people, watching the pig being dug up and taken away for carving. It was really great. The Island Breeze Luau, on the other hand, was kind of like a cafeteria... waiting in a long line in the hotel when it opened, being led to a long cafeteria style table outside where we sat (listening to the entertainment) until being called to walk to the several tables of food. I can't complain about the food... it was tasty. Luckily the weather was good and appropriate for eating outside. No bugs flying around ( : -)) The arrival of the costumed Hawaiians in the boat was enjoyable at the beginning of the show. It just didn't feel like the real historic Hawaii culture to us. Too commercial. It's a shame.

I've never been to a luau and never thought it was going to be educational; which it was. I thought it was all drinks and food which it was but again, very educational. I loved it. The family loved it. I won't be surprise when we return, the family wants to return for another show.

The best luau in the islands. Food and entertainment remains top-notched. They did run out of some of the food early but we ate till we slept. can't wait til 2020.

At the $80+ price, I expected much more for the evening.

Food selection and quantity was limited, especially for a buffet. The "cafeteria tray" plates were tacky and awkward to eat out of. Handsome but better suited for dip.

Even the "open bar" was a waste of money if you don't drink sugary cocktails or well drinks or any alcohol at all. The bartender wasn't sure if the white wine was chardonnay or sav blanc.

The dances kinda blurred and the authenticity is lost when the males dancers seem to be phoning it in. Not a lot of Hawaiian dance or music overall. The emcee could have cut the lounge singer voice.

Insult to injury: I paid for this all in advance.

That all said: the Hawaiian wedding dance was nice, the coconut buster was great with the audience, and it was very family friendly.

Solutions for the Island Breeze Luau: half the price and offer either food or the Polynesian revue with Hawaiian cultural displays. Expand the food, serve more of it. Don't even bother with alcohol, there is a bar at the hotel. More group coordination of the dancers and make it interactive with the crowd. People want to get onstage and hula or make scary Maori faces.

For everyone else, catch whatever your hometown Polynesian revue rstaurant offers or watch this show from the beach after you eat at anywhere outside of Kona's tacky tourist district.

We went to the Island Breeze Luau on 4/19/15, and it was truly a great experience. Despite the size of the overall group, Island Breeze has the procession seamlessly streamlined, expediting your entry as quickly as possible. The ambience is nice, the food is great, and the cast are amazing! They provide a brief history of the Polynesian islands, keeping you entertained and fascinated the entire time. All the while, you feel welcome and a part of the 'ohana, which is the central theme to the show. We highly recommend this experience, where you will have fun, meet new people, gain some weight, and partake in the open bar! Be sure to check it out.

Really enjoyed the show. The girls didn't wear these skimpy outfits, which makes it nice for families. The music was good and the fire show was awesome! The food was really good. I thought the desserts could have been better. The alcohol was ok...pretty watery but fruit. That was okay too, because you can go back as many times as you want. If there were more alcohol in it, we would have been pretty buzzed. They did well. They had different events going too while waiting to be fed. Music and educational background of islands, tattoos they were doing for anyone who wanted them. Hula classes, and making a fish out of a banana tree. Very nice! I had a flower put on my arm. My sister had a dolphin. No worries, they wash off with soap and water really easily.

I would recommend this Luau to anyone and everyone. Every nice experience!

This isn't a restaraunt but rather an event -- a luau. The entertainment portion (hula dancers, fire show etc...) is well done and professional. It is somewhat interactive (the audience is often included in some form). The food is buffet style and representative of native hawaii food (Kalua pork, poke, poi etc..). For buffet, it's decent... But don't expect it to compare to a $15+ meal from a local restaurant. Go for the show... Not the food.

The food at this Luau was absolutely delicious. This is the best Luau food I've had and we've been to a few on various islands. The entertainment was choppy (they would have a show, then pause, another show, pause, but the show itself was good). I like that they include and teach some of the people how to luau and use some of the dance items.

This was supposed to be on the beach, but due to another event it was held inside the hotel ballroom. As our vacation was coming to an end, we weren't able to reschedule to another one. Needless to say, the hotel ballroom had all the ambiance of an awkward high school dance. Some people, even though they paid in full, walked out... and I can't blame them. At least they were spared the awkward pitch of trying to be sold their own photograph for $20... something which should have been included.

Disregarding the venue, the food was substandard. The kalua pig seemed to have been steamed. It was tough and lacking flavor. The $7 kalua pig burger I got a few days prior at a shopping mall food court was far better. The other food items were equally mediocre. I loaded up on the tuna poke in an effort to try and get my money's worth. The one thing that stood out was the frosted banana cake, something likely foreign to traditional luaus. At one point the announcer stated that the food was from the oven, then caught himself and stated he meant the underground oven. Yeah right. I have no doubt that all the food came straight from the hotel's commercial kitchen.

Having an open bar is nice if you're not driving and want to get hammered, otherwise you can get better drinks elsewhere and you won't have to listen to the cheesy announcer ramble on. The saving grace to the whole experience were the performers after the meal, and they put on a show which revived my then-diminished spirits. The powerful drums and fire dancing at the end elicited a genuine applause from the crowd rather than the polite golf claps which previously filled the evening.

If you just have to go to a luau and you have no other options, this will tick that box on your list. And the kids who were present didn't know any better and seemed to enjoy themselves. Otherwise, spend a little more money and go to an upscale venue. This one will just disappoint.

Wonderful time! They know how to put on a great show, with great food, music. The location at the King Kam was perfection. My husband and I had been to another luau, knew it might be crowded, but they expertly managed the group. My young son (8) attended and loved it! Was a highlight of our Big Island visit. Recommend

We wanted our kids to get the full-on "mass tourist experience" and this didn't disappoint. It's a classic luau from the 1980's - all the traditional foods, long rows of tables, and the classic Polynesian dance show. Crowd tends toward the older side, so there weren't many people for our kids to chat with. They still had a good time, though.

We were on the Big Island for our honeymoon and several people recommended this luau over all the rest. It was cheaper than all the other luaus and well worth every penny! The food was better than I expected and had such a variety. From the Kahlua pig to poke to the delicious desserts. Everything was top notch and the entertainment was awesome!! If we ever go back, we will definitely be experiencing this again.

I'm not sure if the slow cooked pig the feature dish of the Luau is meant to be dried, stringy and flavorless? But it certainly was for those sitting at our table. Fortunately they had other marinated meats that were super tasty.

Recommend the premium tickets, as well - perks are worth the extra price.

We got rained out at our luau... they did provide ponchos and made a go of performing but had to cut it short due to rain. I'm sure it would've been better had the weather not been an issue, but it kind of ruined it for us. Soggy Kalua pork just doesn't taste the same!

If this is your first time in Hawaii, going to a luau is required! I have been to three or four over the years and this one was about average for everything except the location. On a beautiful point overlooking the ocean and a great view of the coast, it has the best location by far. The music and show were better than average because the venue is intimate--good entertainment for the new folks.
The service was pretty good--it's self serve so that's not really a perk. Good to pay for the primo seating near the stage.
The food was what you would expect from a major hotel: green salads, potato/macaroni salads, really good fruit, local breads and grilled teriyaki chicken, fish and luau pork/turkey). Open bar. Nice but not likely to return.

On your first visit to Hawaii, a Luau is a must. We found the food was very good and plentiful, and the entertainment was impressive. Certainly an enjoyable way to spend an evening. The staff were very friendly. The only disappointment was that we ordered a vegetarian meal for one of our party, and although it was very good, it came too late when everyone was done eating. She didn't go hungry however, as there were plenty of salads on the buffet.
