Isa's French Bistro Ratings and Reviews
This was not my favorite lunch in Asheville which is unusual for the downtown restaurants. They did not have a lunch menu, just one menu all day with entrees offered in small and large portions. My husband ordered the plain Caesar salad and thought it was great - it was very fresh and had a good dressing. I ordered the Lyonnaise salad with salmon and was a bit surprised to be served all yellow frisee lettuce - the only green were a few fresh haricot verts - cooked perfectly, just surprised at the look of the salad. The salmon portion was med. rare - nicely done. If I were to return, I would try something different, but for the prices for lunch, some of the other local restaurants might be a better choice. One other note, the free valet parking at the hotel next door (offered by the restaurant) was not available when we arrived, resulting in a 30 minute delay to find parking elsewhere. It was a Friday, so maybe it was just too busy to accommodate.
We were looking forward to an easy dinner out after Christmas. We had a nice table in the corner, it was 6pm, there were very few people there then. Three of us ordered the same entrée which was the steak au poivre. The meat was tough, it was not hot and given that there were so few patrons it surprisingly took a long time.
This was the worst meal I have ever had in Asheville, and cost twice as much as a usual meal at Limones, Chestnut, or Curate. Service was horrible, messed up our order multiple times, did not apologize for this, and the food was the equivalent of what we could have ordered at Cracker Barrel. Really tough steak, ham was Meh. The menu was fixed for Christmas day and really was not what the online menu reflects. I wish there was some type of warning for this on their website but I did not see anything posted about a special menu for Christmas. I love French food, had heard great things about this restaurant, and was really, really disappointed. Will not go back.
Overall, our meals were interesting and delicious. The bibb salads were missing the toasted cashews. Our waiter told us the salad only had crispy shallots, so he was not familiar with the special holiday menu. He served a glass of wine with cork chip in it, but promptly replaced that when I pointed it out. We had anticipated having the apple tart dessert which was removed from the holiday menu. We were seated at the table nearest the door on a very cold evening. Also the ladies bathroom was not serviced properly.
We dined at Isa's Christmas Eve and were happy to find such a nice place open. The front of the house staff was very friendly, knowledgeable and skilled. The food service itself though, was slow even though the restaurant didn't seem crowded. Overall the food was very good (try the tartare and rack of lamb!). However, I had the bouillabaisse (typically one of my favorite dishes) and found it flavorless and lacking in substance for the price. Overall, a good experience and we would go back.
We went here for Christmas Eve dinner. The table was lovely but we had a difficult time hearing each other since the noise level was quite high. We ordered 2 bottles of wine but had to remind the waitress to bring the second bottle halfway through our meal. The Salad Lyonnaise was tasteless yet the Cauliflower appetizer was quite good but should be split since it's a lot for one person. I was disappointed in the steak since it was a bit tough and the french fries were soggy. The duck was a good choice. The only vegan option was the risotto. I was told it was quite bland. There were no appetizers available for our vegan guest other than a plain salad. We asked to have our meal boxed and the waitress forgot and tossed it out. However, she gave us a credit on the bill. All in all, I will probably not return since there are better French bistros.
Enjoyed the meal at Isa's. Never been disappointed. Steak and pork chop dishes cooked very well. Bone-in pork chop was a little bit dry, but the fig gastric sauce that accompanied it took any thought of the dryness away...it was phenomenal. As always, restaurants in Asheville get pricey. Isa's is in the middle when it comes to price, but still approaches $150 for 2 with a bottle of wine. That said, the service is impeccable. Multiple servers supported the table and from the primary server to the person delivering food, all were gracious, polite, and truly looked to make sure our experience was enjoyable. Always a good choice!
We had lunch the day after Thanksgiving and the kitchen staff must have been exhausted or new staff was working. The salad that my wife ordered was missing several ingredients that the menu indicated should be present. Our server graciously replaced the salad with correct ingredients. Expediter in kitchen should have noticed that the salad was not correctly prepared.
Isa's has a nice environment and is in a great location. The staff were cordial and helpful. The food sounded nice, but was nothing that special. The tartar lacked flavor and our dinners were good, but if you're spending $25-$35 a plate, you'd expect really good.
I also miss my french bread and it was a let down not getting bread at a French restaurant.

After watching a UNCTV special (NC Food program) that chronicled the bison industry in NC. It specifically visited Isa's and had the chef prepare 3 dishes using bison.
We scheduled a trip to Asheville (275 miles one way)to enjoy the preparations. Upon review of the menu we saw that there were no dishes featuring bison, in any form. When we asked our server about this and she commented that her first year there she saw bison on the menu but the "owner" wanted to go in a "different direction".
Shame on PBS and it's delay in featured programs. FYI, we are not French bistro people.
We went this restaurant on Friday night and it excellent, so my family went back on Saturday night. However, our experience was not the same. We ordered cheese board which was fair to say the least. The wedge salad was just okay. The bang, bang cauliflower was excellent once again. Then for entrees I had the risotto which was bland. The duck was not as good as Friday night which what brought us back for the second night. Very disappointed and will not return.
We ate two dinners at Isa's Bistro while staying at the Haywood Park Hotel, whose lobby it adjoins. Both were excellent, chosen from a menu with enough variety to keep one coming back often. The first time we ate outside, finding ourselves stared at by pedestrians who were mostly good natured. The second time we ate inside and enjoyed the quiet ambiance. Bang Band Cauliflower was delightful, a lightly curried, Tempura style appetizer that held our interest (my wife and I split one portion and had some left over). The oysters on the half shell were sweet and fresh. At one dinner we both had the excellent duck entree and at the second my wife had Julia Child chicken (moist and tasty) while I had rack of lamb, full of flavor. The wines were priced fairly. Our only complaint was the lack of a light dessert. They all looked good, but they also looked too rich to follow the substantial meals we had eaten. Service was professional and friendly.
Nice. Sunday very quiet. We walked by Saturday and it was packed. Only a few people on Sunday. Waitress was exceptional. Food was very good. My wife loved it. Duck very good. Drinks were great. Sat outside and could watch the surroundings and people. Good weather and covered patio. If it rains, your protected. It was on 50th anniversary.
