Isabella's - Frederick Ratings and Reviews
We went to Isabella's for my birthday. It was bitterly cold so we arrived early and sat at the bar until close to our reservation time. The bartenders were friendly and attentive and they had a nice selection of specialty cocktails to choose from. We had very tasty dinner of tapas and entrees. The waiter Brian was young but served us well and he could take some kidding around. When Isabella's found out it was my birthday the chef put together a beautiful assortment of Isabella desserts' small bites on a platter for the table. Delightful! We would happily return there.
Came for an early NYE dinner with out of town guests. Other than being seated unnecessarily just inside the door, the experience was very good. We were not rushed, and the food was delicious. I will say, I ordered a bottle of wine which on the menu was a 2013, but when it arrived it was a 2014. Wine was still good, but worth noting the discrepancy.
Very good tapas menu overall. Comfortable and cozy. Service is fine. This is an older, historic building in downtown Frederick. However, the wood floors sound like they're going to give in. The service personnel walk up and down the wood floor aisle but no matter how light and thin they are they sound like dinosaurs thredging back and forth and the food and drinks on your table in the booth jump and shake with each booming footstep. That's the drawback to dining here. Try sitting in a booth closer to the front entrance or better at the window side tables.
Good brunch options - the eggs benedict was very good as were the pancakes. The Manchego(?) grits were awesome. But I wish more of the brunch items came with traditional sides - several in our party had to order a la carte. Not a big deal though...
We found the "special" which was waffles with a strawberry compote to be, unfortunately, overwhelmingly sweet.
Nice ambiance - there are three(?) seating areas in the restaurant and we were in one of the smaller ones which made conversation easy. Our area also seemed to be child free (there were plenty of young children in the main room). We wondered if they did this on purpose. If so, we are a fan.
We used to live in Frederick and Isabella's was a favorite. We now live 180 miles away, but make the trip at least twice a year, either for lunch or dinner with an overnight stay. The food is superb and the staff is usually terrific (our server this past visit could have had more knowledge regarding the wine list).
It feels like the owners group has moved on and isn't too interested in Isabella's any more. Service is slipping, there's no bottle water, the coffee machine is gone so no espresso, etc. Portions are smaller - still tasty - but overall Isabella's isn't what it was 5 years ago.
I thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience at Isabella's. It was the first time that I dined at this restaurant, and I was very pleased with the outcome, the food, and the beverages. The seating manager got us a table for seven after we deviously entered two reservations for three and four people, so I also rank this restaurant highly in terms of accommodating their clientele.
A wonderful Sunday brunch with an extensive menu that makes choosing difficult. One of our party is vegetarian and asked that they chef leave out the Canadian bacon on her eggs Benedict. The waiter immediately offered to substitute spinach or Portabello mushrooms...how accommodating!
Me: Hi, my name is ___. I have a reservation (thru open table) for 8pm, but I know i'm 15 minutes early.
Host: (does not check book or even glance at the open tables) Your table isn't ready .
Me: Ok then, I guess i'll come back a little later. By 8pm
Host: Yea, come back a little after 8pm.
8pm I arrive and stand by the host desk. Host comes and goes, grabs menus, writes things down, etc. Never acknowledges me even though I'm the only person there. She talks to another male host. He motions for me to follow him as he throws 2 menus down at a table. No hello, no greeting or any kind of verbal acknowledgment.
The rest of the food and service was phenomenal. I would love to come back and try everything on the menu, even though that would cost a lot!! But the whole time, I was uncomfortable because of the unfriendly greeting I got. It also made my date uncomfortable and upset. I kept asking myself why. Was I not dressed appropriately? Does it make the hosts job harder to get reservations through open table? I'm sure they were busy, but it's a small place and didn't seem overwhelming.
