Isabella's - Frederick Ratings and Reviews
A wonderful Sunday brunch with an extensive menu that makes choosing difficult. One of our party is vegetarian and asked that they chef leave out the Canadian bacon on her eggs Benedict. The waiter immediately offered to substitute spinach or Portabello mushrooms...how accommodating!
Me: Hi, my name is ___. I have a reservation (thru open table) for 8pm, but I know i'm 15 minutes early.
Host: (does not check book or even glance at the open tables) Your table isn't ready .
Me: Ok then, I guess i'll come back a little later. By 8pm
Host: Yea, come back a little after 8pm.
8pm I arrive and stand by the host desk. Host comes and goes, grabs menus, writes things down, etc. Never acknowledges me even though I'm the only person there. She talks to another male host. He motions for me to follow him as he throws 2 menus down at a table. No hello, no greeting or any kind of verbal acknowledgment.
The rest of the food and service was phenomenal. I would love to come back and try everything on the menu, even though that would cost a lot!! But the whole time, I was uncomfortable because of the unfriendly greeting I got. It also made my date uncomfortable and upset. I kept asking myself why. Was I not dressed appropriately? Does it make the hosts job harder to get reservations through open table? I'm sure they were busy, but it's a small place and didn't seem overwhelming.
I've been to Isabella's many times. I return over and over because it's delicious. However yesterday at lunch, I ordered 3 hot tapas. Two out of three were cold. Not that it was sitting on a counter waiting to be served, but undercooked! Cold asparagus. Cold fried goat cheese. Luckily the shrimp was sizzling. Wouldn't have eaten it otherwise.
Isabella's had such high ratings on Trip Advisor that I was sure I had picked a winner.
But, alas, there were many things that made our meal less than perfect. The waitress
was overly attentive at times, and then, would disappear for a long time. At one point,
she delivered some drinks, and before we could get the words out to tell her something, she was gone again. Then, there was the gnats. All throughout the meal, there were tiny bugs that looked like gnats or fruit flies around us. I know this isn't something the restaurant can do
much about, but it was not very appetizing. Our starters were excellent, but the portion was tiny. Each only came with 3 tiny bite size items. We got them to share, and needless to say, it was difficult with 4 people. The brunch items were o.k., but not fantastic. The meal wasn't cheap, and upon leaving, we noticed several cute places near by. Not sure it was the best choice for our day trip to Frederick....
We had a very pleasant and relaxed dinner at Isabella's. Service was friendly and the food was great. Standouts were the goat cheese and almond fritters with shallot vinaigrette and the vegetable paélla.
The room was very quiet, but it was a Tuesday and not very crowded.
We'll definitely return.
I like the small plate concept, but the prices here are a bit high. I have been to many tapas places where there are far more selections at a lower price point so you can afford to get several plates each and really experiment. Many of the non-vegetarian plates were $15+ dollars. The food was fine, but it wasn't much bang for the buck. We were also crammed in between two other tables at an angle next to the fireplace screen - which was touching our table. The noise level was tolerable, but not pleasant. I heard virtually every word from the fellow behind me who was entertaining his grandson with stories of his exploits.
We are regulars and brought some friends.
After we showed the how to order and got through round 2 of the tapas they commented they were coming back soon to try another set of interesting bites. The liners the Hamberquesos chorizo and the baked Brie the best
Great tapas place with a ton of options. They have a date, bacon, goat cheese thing that is phenomenal. Their crab/avocado was amazing as well. The fried asparagus is a staple and highly recommended. I'll be back.
If you enjoy La Tasca you'll love this place--it is much tastier.
My bookclub met at Isabella's on Saturday and we had a wonderful lunch gathering. The food was excellent and perfect for our group with different tapas coming periodically. We have a member from Spain and she was impressed with the quality and variety! The service was superb and very patient with our group! We were a bit on the noisy side but our table closer to the window was helpful in letting us not bother the rest of the clients too much. We all ranked our meeting very high based on ambiance, quality of food and service and everyone agreed it would be a lovely place to meet again. Thank you Isabella's!
Sunday at 5 PM for dinner for 6 including 2 kids, no crowd at all and the kitchen wasn't swamped which I have experienced on previous visits. I felt like the tapas menu was a lot smaller than when I last visited but they had added more entrees. One guest was gluten free and they had lots of items marked with a star that were GF. All tapas came out timely and hot, nice portions to share. We got 2 desserts, a GF chocolate cake and a pot de creme chocolate mousse that were both delicious. Our server Anna could not have been more fun and pleasant, she made our experience even better than if it had just ben all good!
I love Isabella's! We had a party of 6 plus a baby for lunch on a Sunday. I arrived at reservation time, but the rest of the party was stuck in traffic. They sat me anyway. The waiter was awesome! Very friendly and polite. We were there for a few hours and didn't ever feel rushed to leave. When we did leave, the waiter even brought me my phone which I'd left on my chair. I've been here several times now and the food, ambiance, and staff have always been excellent!
A perfectly ok restaurant, but not what you might expect from the Isabella Group in terms of food quality, execution, and attention to detail. Paella Valencia was far too heavily salted, while the sausage and chicken in it were overcooked, the former falling apart and the latter a tad tough and leathery. Manchego croquettes were deep fried, but hit the table just lukewarm. It all was edible, but perhaps not worth the cost. The tempranillo by the glass was generous pour, fwiw. And, our waitress could not have been nicer. Would not drive from DC to Frederick for it, as we did, but might give it another try if I was in the area.
Food is always delicious and the wait staff friendly. I have never been to Isabella's and had a bad meal. The food is seasoned to perfection and even though the restaurant is full of customers I never have to wait very long for our first course. Isabella's seems to be a staple in downtown Frederick as it should.
Overall very satisfied with my dining yet again! Frequent flyer within the establishment and will continue to be! I love the selection and ever changing menu of tapas. There are obviously staples of my dining experience, but there is also something new each visit. Overall very satisfied yet again, and will continue to recommend the restaurant. Perhaps a corporate function will be the next venture?
