Isabella's - Frederick Ratings and Reviews
It feels like the owners group has moved on and isn't too interested in Isabella's any more. Service is slipping, there's no bottle water, the coffee machine is gone so no espresso, etc. Portions are smaller - still tasty - but overall Isabella's isn't what it was 5 years ago.
I thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience at Isabella's. It was the first time that I dined at this restaurant, and I was very pleased with the outcome, the food, and the beverages. The seating manager got us a table for seven after we deviously entered two reservations for three and four people, so I also rank this restaurant highly in terms of accommodating their clientele.
A wonderful Sunday brunch with an extensive menu that makes choosing difficult. One of our party is vegetarian and asked that they chef leave out the Canadian bacon on her eggs Benedict. The waiter immediately offered to substitute spinach or Portabello mushrooms...how accommodating!
Me: Hi, my name is ___. I have a reservation (thru open table) for 8pm, but I know i'm 15 minutes early.
Host: (does not check book or even glance at the open tables) Your table isn't ready .
Me: Ok then, I guess i'll come back a little later. By 8pm
Host: Yea, come back a little after 8pm.
8pm I arrive and stand by the host desk. Host comes and goes, grabs menus, writes things down, etc. Never acknowledges me even though I'm the only person there. She talks to another male host. He motions for me to follow him as he throws 2 menus down at a table. No hello, no greeting or any kind of verbal acknowledgment.
The rest of the food and service was phenomenal. I would love to come back and try everything on the menu, even though that would cost a lot!! But the whole time, I was uncomfortable because of the unfriendly greeting I got. It also made my date uncomfortable and upset. I kept asking myself why. Was I not dressed appropriately? Does it make the hosts job harder to get reservations through open table? I'm sure they were busy, but it's a small place and didn't seem overwhelming.
I've been to Isabella's many times. I return over and over because it's delicious. However yesterday at lunch, I ordered 3 hot tapas. Two out of three were cold. Not that it was sitting on a counter waiting to be served, but undercooked! Cold asparagus. Cold fried goat cheese. Luckily the shrimp was sizzling. Wouldn't have eaten it otherwise.
Isabella's had such high ratings on Trip Advisor that I was sure I had picked a winner.
But, alas, there were many things that made our meal less than perfect. The waitress
was overly attentive at times, and then, would disappear for a long time. At one point,
she delivered some drinks, and before we could get the words out to tell her something, she was gone again. Then, there was the gnats. All throughout the meal, there were tiny bugs that looked like gnats or fruit flies around us. I know this isn't something the restaurant can do
much about, but it was not very appetizing. Our starters were excellent, but the portion was tiny. Each only came with 3 tiny bite size items. We got them to share, and needless to say, it was difficult with 4 people. The brunch items were o.k., but not fantastic. The meal wasn't cheap, and upon leaving, we noticed several cute places near by. Not sure it was the best choice for our day trip to Frederick....
We had a very pleasant and relaxed dinner at Isabella's. Service was friendly and the food was great. Standouts were the goat cheese and almond fritters with shallot vinaigrette and the vegetable paélla.
The room was very quiet, but it was a Tuesday and not very crowded.
We'll definitely return.
I like the small plate concept, but the prices here are a bit high. I have been to many tapas places where there are far more selections at a lower price point so you can afford to get several plates each and really experiment. Many of the non-vegetarian plates were $15+ dollars. The food was fine, but it wasn't much bang for the buck. We were also crammed in between two other tables at an angle next to the fireplace screen - which was touching our table. The noise level was tolerable, but not pleasant. I heard virtually every word from the fellow behind me who was entertaining his grandson with stories of his exploits.
We are regulars and brought some friends.
After we showed the how to order and got through round 2 of the tapas they commented they were coming back soon to try another set of interesting bites. The liners the Hamberquesos chorizo and the baked Brie the best
Great tapas place with a ton of options. They have a date, bacon, goat cheese thing that is phenomenal. Their crab/avocado was amazing as well. The fried asparagus is a staple and highly recommended. I'll be back.
If you enjoy La Tasca you'll love this place--it is much tastier.
My bookclub met at Isabella's on Saturday and we had a wonderful lunch gathering. The food was excellent and perfect for our group with different tapas coming periodically. We have a member from Spain and she was impressed with the quality and variety! The service was superb and very patient with our group! We were a bit on the noisy side but our table closer to the window was helpful in letting us not bother the rest of the clients too much. We all ranked our meeting very high based on ambiance, quality of food and service and everyone agreed it would be a lovely place to meet again. Thank you Isabella's!
