Irori Sushi Ratings and Reviews
Fantastic Japanese/Japanese-inspired food. Great variety, including cooked vegetable dishes (generally rare in sushi-focused eateries). Be aware of No booking policy and of awkward "shoe-off" seating arrangement on low tables with footwells - the waiters tower over you when they walk on the raised floor and have to squat down to serve you...
The restaurant refused to honor reservations set on OpenTable and made the party wait with the queue with everyone else in the cramped waiting area. Service was poor beyond belief. Go to SugarFish for better sushi if made to wait in line with everyone else.
I was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and the traditional Japanese style dinner setting. Menu needed some explaining (there were no descriptions) but the server was super nice, patient, and accommodating. And above all, the sushi was really good quality.
Been coming here for a while. Food is excellent. Service is usually very good. This past visit, we had drinks, appetizers and dinner. Shortly after dinner and paying, our waitress asked us if we could leave as people were waiting. Hadn't been 5 minutes sitting there. Didn't appreciate it.
Nice décor; beautiful wood floors, Japanese style sunken tables (no shoes!), a great tapestry on the back wall. Clean restroom (they provide slippers).
I notice a lot of turn-over in the service staff – lots of new faces. However the service was very good; clearly work as a team… everyone pitched in to handle a couple different requests.
Overall food is very good. Good variety and quality. Black cod teriyaki was good. We had a yellow-tail collar which was very nice and meaty. Mushrooms and asparagus good. Omakase sushi was good – uni fresh, most of the fish was fresh and good quality; only noticeable exception was the salmon, which was clearly farmed, and tonight seemed pretty bland.
Food and experience were underwhelming. Yelp reviews suggest it's higher quality than Sugarfish but I actually strongly disagree. Also they brought out frozen ginger with the wasabi. Made the whole meal feel like it might not be as fresh as everyone presumes.
Redemption is a wonderful thing!
Used to be my favorite go-to place in MDR for Japanese Food, but after 3 consecutive disappointing & unfavorable meals, i took a 15 month hiatus from Irori due to inconsistent mediocre food, shrinking portions, and unfriendly service. Now, I'm happy to report, upon my most recent return, everything was excellent once again and top-notch! For the sake of repeating myself & being redundant, search for my 3 previous reviews for Irori from the past couple years.
