Iron Gate Ratings and Reviews
Old-school dining with a classic menu. The food was delicious and each course can be paired with a specific wine. The wait staff was very experienced and knowledgable about the menu. It was somewhat noisier than usual due to Valentine's Day celebrations. A delightful evening out!
Always a great experience in food and service! The most recent was a Birthday Dinner for my significant other with a couple who own an upscale restaurant in San Francisco who multiple times would not let us pay for our meal. We wanted to take them to a special place to reciprocate and they loved the Iron Gate!

The food and service was absolutely fantastic! We had always heard good reviews about The Iron Gate, but just recently had the opportunity to experience eating there. The staff is extremely attentive! The owner actually visited our table, thanking us for dining at the restaurant and asking if everything was okay. The food was delicious and the presentation was very nice. We will definitely be back!
We have been going to the Iron Gate for over 35 years and still enjoy the food, the bartenders and the waiters. Very good veal dishes and salads. The sorbet to cleanse the palate is a nice touch. Enjoyed watching a lot of people in the dining room celebrating birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions. Lots of singing & flambe entrees for all to witness. Lots of happy people.
The Caesar salad for two was good. My entree (Steak Au Poivre Flambe ) was tough and the pepper sauce over it was insipid. My partner's entree (Poulet a la Marsala) was "just ok". The desert (fresh berries in ice cream) was good. The service was very good and attentive.
This is a classic old time Italian - French restaurant if you're looking for well dressed waiters with a support staff that is outstanding, this place is for you. Our waiter was part of a 3 person team, attentive but not hovering. They certainly knew what they were doing and we'll well coordinated.
This is a old fashioned French Italian restaurant. If if you're looking for old fashioned and elegance. This is a must go to place.
Our waiter engaged with us knew the menu and specials. He even got special wine glasses for us.
We had an excellent abalone appetizer that wasn't overpowered by allowing sauces. Thus the subtle flavor of the abalone was spot on. Our house salad for 2 was tossed at the table with mixed greens, bay shrimp, avocado, and a perfect lite dressing, that again was not overpowering.
My wife had the provimi veal special with artichoke hearts and marsala wine. I had the Petrali sole special almondine, both excellent!
It was a wonderful evening. I always feel great when the Mrs. Is very happy with a perfect evening !
I have already posted a review on trip advisor.
It was my son 21 st Birthday and this Iron made a true memory. From the stupendous amazing fabulous waiter to the cocktails and of course the exquisite food.
Thank you Thank you Thank you for making my son and ours a great evening of fun and great dining!!!!!
Ok at best. The service was great, really nice folks work there, hostess is hot, food not worth the money. Just to give you an example, $30 salad for two, it was nothing more than spinach and bacon. $55 steak Diane, while tasty, it was a $10 Safeway steak - should have been $30 max. Can't make an old fashion either.
On the plus side, the whole flambe thing they do is pretty cool. But it feels like they up charge for the experience.
The food never disappoints at the Iron Gate. The normal bartender was off so it took some time to get my cosmopolitan right. The veal piccata was de-lish as was the sole meuniere. So happy to have my Caesar salad made at the table. The bananas foster (made tableside) was the perfect ending to my birthday lunch.
Iron Gate has been around for as long as I can remember. The staff is friendly and proficient. The menu is extensive, and features a great number of flaming dishes from salads, through entrees, and onto desserts. We started with fried calamari which was about the best I've ever had. I moved on to a flaming spinach and bacon salad which was excellent; my wife had a Caesar salad which was equally good. Both were prepared tableside. Our entrée was chateau briand which proved, to my surprise, to be a disappointment. The presentation was exquisite with the vegetables and mashed potatoes being quite tasty and beautifully presented. My wife's cut was indeed medium rare while mine was well done. I don't know why the cooking was so uneven, but so it was. I did try my wife's and it was excellent. Dessert was cherries jubiliee, and it too was good. The overall cost was nontrivial, and but for the entrée, I would have considered it money well spent. Hence, my four star rating.
Love the place, food is good, service is exceptional.
The steak Diana was cooked to perfection, the onion soup was a great starter.
Caesar salad is a must have, prepared at the table.
We liked the fact we were not rushed, there was enough time between each course.
Great spot, excellent food. Old school, a true relic from the 60s, when fine dining meant French food with all the meat, butter and cream one could ever want. Think Mad Men. One of those places where you could actually dress for dinner and not be out of place, although you will see diners there in Bay Area casual as well. Great bar - yes martini glasses should be chilled! Probably the last restaurant in the Bay Area that still makes tableside entrees. All of the meat dishes are excellent; try the Caesar salad and the Grand Marnier souffle. Some may think it is a little pricey, but all in all, it is more than worth it. I'm glad a restaurant like this still manages to attract a following.
1st time dining there. Cocktails were fine.
Wait staff were slow, despite lack of patrons and unfriendly.
Food was unremarkable and in my case, over cooked.
I wanted to like this restaurant as it’s close to work and home, but I won’t be back and I can’t recommend.
The food is outstanding and the staff is tremendous. This is a jewell on the mid peninsula. Great cocktais and wine list that stands with any restaurant. Dessert, includes sofflels that are a 10 out of 10.
Cannot recommend the Iron Gate with more confidence in the entire experience.
Yes, it’s old school but that’s what’s so wonderful about Iron Gate. They make quality food you simply can’t find elsewhere. The Steak Diane is not only a show but is so tasty. The abalone is tender and delicious. And if you leave without trying the Bananas Foster, you’re missing out. Leave the bistros to everybody else and try Iron Gate!
The best Ceaser salad in the San Francisco Bay Area - veal parmigiana was about a C through and the Chicken with Dijon and mushrooms was an absolute A+ - as well as the Veal Scalopini was an A - the waiters pay close attention to you and are jovial -
Definitely going back soon ❤️
The entire experience is very good. It's a bit on the pricey side for certain items but overall holds strong value for both food and wine. Can recommend the meats and fish on the menu, but the pasta primavera was quite bland. I would recommend the table experiences such as the caesar salad and steak Diane which are prepared and served at your table and are both outstanding.
Love the Iron Gate-go there for my birthday the last 3 yrs. Was really looking forward to a big lobster, like last year (2016)! 8 or 9 oz! But it was mushy & only 6 or 7 once’s! Very disappointed! Did mentioned it to our waiter to no avail! And it was very expensive! Did have the soufflé & it was Delish! Will go again, but if any problems , I will be more assertive! 🎉😜
