Unassuming from the outside, Ironside is an excellent find.
Three guests, three excellent meals, but the Sole Almondine was absolutely fabulous. The staff is always attentive and gracious. Special place.
This is one of the few remaining classic American restaurants in the European style. We had Caesar salad for two at the table, Steak Diane flamed at the table, and Steak Au Poive flamed at the table. Outstanding dinner! We have to go back another night to enjoy their live music.
The food was mostly very good. I had delicious scallops as an appetizer, and the rack of lamb was tender and perfectly cooked. However, a restaurant that charges these prices should be more picky about the quality of the produce. Specifically, they serve mushy, anemic, out of season tomatoes (a roasted half tomato came as a side to the lamb but was inedible). If you can't find good tomatoes, don't serve them. Burger King can get away with it, but not a fine dining place.
The personal service and wonderful food made for a special evening. My wife and I both had veal for the main dishes. One was topped with pan roasted dungenous crab and the second was prepared with a marsala and mushroom sauce and flambed at our tableside. Both were delicious. And I highly recommend the soufflé for desert.
The dinner was exceptional from the salad to dessert! We enjoyed the service, which is friendly and courteous. The food is delicious and watching it being prepared at tableside is always a treat! We will enjoy many more special dinners at Iron Gate!
Iron Gate is classic, great quality food and great service
Consistently AWESOME !
The IRON GATE is a great place for everyday outings AND special occasions. The food is excellent, the service is attentive and the drinks are reasonably priced.
On Friday and Saturday Nights the Bar is lively when the band starts to play and people start to dance! Love this place !!!!!
This is the perfect place to enjoy an excellent meal and actually HEAR the people seated at your table. The noise level in the dining room is just right, even on a busy night. There are so many restaurants where you can hardly hear the waiter or the other people at your table....and I have no problems with MY hearing!
our second visit to Iron Gate. this time for my Daughter in Law's birthday. quite crowded on a Friday night. overall, we had a fine meal. the exception was my Steak au Poive, which was significantly overcooked (I'd asked for it rare and it arrived medium well). quite disappointing. I reported that to our waiter and she graciously comped our Souffles, which was very nice. we will certainly return to Iron Gate again, but this time be far more careful in ordering.
We came here for a business dinner and requested a private room. They gave us a private room and even let us stay past closing time to discuss business. Great food, great service. Thank you Iron Gate!
Our family always enjoys the Iron Gate. The food. atmosphere, service is always the best in the Peninsula.
The staff were very pleasant and welcoming. Announced the specials right away and made good recommendations. We were able to converse easily even with moderate noise level. The food was quite yummy. Will definitely return for more fine dining.
Always enjoy the Iron Gate for 40 plus years! Bartenders Larry & Tony make good drinks & are very pleasant. Food (especially our Veal entrees) very good. Good house salads. Guiseppe the waiter great!
You are never disappointed at the Iron Gate, great food, best service!
This is a great special occasion spot. Food is perfect and service is phenomenal. Never had a bad meal there.
I love this place. The waiters are deck out in Tuxedo, the make the salad at the table and have flaming dishes. They are super nice and very accommodating. We had a large party for my mom's b-day and she dropped her earning and all the waiters and manager were looking for it.
On Friday and Saturday nights they have live music with no cover.
The food, service and ambiance is always impressive at Iron Gate. However on this busy Friday evening we were disappointed to witness an argument between a manager/owner and a couple servers - the manager was berating the servers in the middle of the restaurant. This behavior was inappropriate especially for a reputable establishment like Iron Gate which has been around for decades.
Not being a regular at the Iron Gate, our recent dinner there was ruined by the huge increase in prices from the current menu over the printed prices on Open Table. The Blue Point Oysters were not $14.00, but $21,00; and the Veal Piccata was not $26.000, but $33.00.
Don't know if this is done intentionally, or is the result of carelessness and neglect; but it is false advertising and a matter of fraud.
The food and atmosphere were indeed worthwhile, but none the less, our overall experience was marred by this deception.
This place has "old school" charm but that was about all it had going for it when we dined there recently. The waiters were attentive and amusing as usual but the food was not good. 5 out of 8 in our party ordered steaks and they all commented that the meat was "rubbery". My petrale sole almondine was covered in a heavy white sauce that overwhelmed the fish. The bread felt like it was a day old. Caesar salad was great, as usual, but that was the only highlight. Huge disappointment overall.
Food and service is always good at the Iron Gate. The restaurant excels at tableside preparation on several of its items.
Always a great place to eat. Great food and quality service.
My first time there but one of my dining partners has been many times. Very attentive waiter. Crab Louie had very fresh ingredients, no lack of excellent (claw) crab meat and delicious dressing on the side. Dining partner had the cod special which was also tasty. Easy to park in the lot next to the building. Would definitely go again if I'm in the area.
It was nice. Would come back again.
I don't know of another restaurant in the SF Bay Area with Iron Gate's old style French service at your dining table with Flambé, and more.
The Iron Gate remains a classic that has endured. One of the few places that still makes Caesar salad the right way at the table. All entrees good.
The Iron Gate never disappoints. It always exceeds my expectations. And Larry the bartender makes a perfect cosmopolitan. My happy place for many years!!!
Always great food and service....have never been disappointed.
Unfortunately we were not impressed with Iron Gate. one of the meals ordered was a special - bone in rib-eye. There was just no taste to it. This may have been a result of it being pounded so thin and not seasoned at all. generally, a rib-eye is a flavorful cut. Two of the other meals just had no real flavor to them. The Caesar salad was good. Two of us ordered a glass of wine.
the one that was recommended was poor and I do not know why it was on the menu. it was certainly not the least expensive. the service was not great either.
Quite honestly, there are several nice restaurants in San Mateo, Belmont, and San Carlos. There is just no reason for me to go back to Iron Gate.
We always enjoy the Iron Gate. Larry & Tony make us good cocktails & are very friendly.
Mr. Magoo, our waiter, was terrific as was the busboy. Our entree salads & Veal entrees were wonderful Nothing NOT to like. We will be back soon.
Over the years I have eaten at the Iron Gate many times as have the people I was with. We all have loved the food, service and ambience. This last time did not live up to our groups’ expectations. It mainly had to do with our wait person. He was quick to take our drink orders and to tell us the specials ... then he seemed to disappear! He never brought us menus. After we had lingered over our drinks for a very long time, we finally had to try and find our waiter and ask for menus. People around us were attentively being served. It was a busy night, but it did not seem to affect the other patrons’ service. There were several larger parties there that Wednesday evening and the noise level was very high. We could have put up with all this if we had had attentive service. We were wondering if this was due to the fact we were four women! I finally got up and spoke to the manager. The manager said that our waiter was new and went and spoke with him. The waiter then became more attentive. Prior to the manager speaking to our waiter, we did not see him in the room much. People who came in to eat way after us were there were served their drinks, served their food, and left while we were still waiting for our food! We were all very disappointed ... especially since this was a special birthday dinner and the birthday girl had requested eating at the Iron Gate.
Four of us were there to celebrate one birthday and one moving away. I had food issues that were addressed smoothly. Service was delightful. Food was tasty. Champagne cocktails were good. Souffle desserts were lovely. Also, the place has a large visible sign on El Camino, so I found it with no trouble. Meal was a little pricey, but we ate well.
I HAVE BEEN GOING TO THE IRON GATE FOR 20 YEARS, IT IS ALWAYS THE SAME DELICIOUS FOOD, GREAT SERVICE. THE SCALONE, MIX OF CALAMARI AND SCALLOPS POUNDED TOGETHER ALMOST TASTE LIKE ABALONE, AND IT IS HALF THE PRICE. THE SOUFFLES ARE THE BEST. THE WAITERS ARE PROFESSIONALS, HAVE BEEN WORKING THERE FOR A VERY LONG TIME. IT IS A VERY WARM ATMOSPHERE.
Excellent dining experience and service. Highly recommended. Prices are high but quality and service are in line with the price.
Good, traditional, old style, continental cuisine, served by seasoned waiters. Great for special occasions, as several dishes are prepared table-side a la flambe. Souffle dessert is also special and amazing.
The Iron Gate is wonderful. it was our first time and it more than met it's great reputation on the Peninsula. we used to love Chantilly in Redwood City for an elegant evening(sadly closed); Iron Gate easily takes it's place. The food is great (classic french plus), the ambiance and decor lovely, the service is outstanding. it's expensive, but definitely worth it. we're hooked!
Very good, but rather expensive.
Tables too close together.
Can hear conversations from other diners.
Not enough room for table-side service to be table-side at all all tables.
Always consistently great food, friendly wait staff, and a genuinely great place for a special meal.
I give 3 stars this time(we were there few times prior) because we did not like the way Hostess treated us when we "checked in". It was a Valentine weekend and she was NOT pleasant, kept talking on the phone and had no happy personality at all. :(
My husband and I went to Iron Gate on a belated Valentine's Day celebration and had a great evening. We really enjoyed the food and the service was fantastic, but were surprised by the pricing of the menu items - we are the type to do our research before making reservations for restaurants, and it seemed that prices had gone up at least 20% from the prices we saw online. Otherwise, a great experience overall!
