It was nice. Would come back again.
I don't know of another restaurant in the SF Bay Area with Iron Gate's old style French service at your dining table with Flambé, and more.
The Iron Gate remains a classic that has endured. One of the few places that still makes Caesar salad the right way at the table. All entrees good.
The Iron Gate never disappoints. It always exceeds my expectations. And Larry the bartender makes a perfect cosmopolitan. My happy place for many years!!!
Unfortunately we were not impressed with Iron Gate. one of the meals ordered was a special - bone in rib-eye. There was just no taste to it. This may have been a result of it being pounded so thin and not seasoned at all. generally, a rib-eye is a flavorful cut. Two of the other meals just had no real flavor to them. The Caesar salad was good. Two of us ordered a glass of wine.
the one that was recommended was poor and I do not know why it was on the menu. it was certainly not the least expensive. the service was not great either.
Quite honestly, there are several nice restaurants in San Mateo, Belmont, and San Carlos. There is just no reason for me to go back to Iron Gate.
We always enjoy the Iron Gate. Larry & Tony make us good cocktails & are very friendly.
Mr. Magoo, our waiter, was terrific as was the busboy. Our entree salads & Veal entrees were wonderful Nothing NOT to like. We will be back soon.
Over the years I have eaten at the Iron Gate many times as have the people I was with. We all have loved the food, service and ambience. This last time did not live up to our groups’ expectations. It mainly had to do with our wait person. He was quick to take our drink orders and to tell us the specials ... then he seemed to disappear! He never brought us menus. After we had lingered over our drinks for a very long time, we finally had to try and find our waiter and ask for menus. People around us were attentively being served. It was a busy night, but it did not seem to affect the other patrons’ service. There were several larger parties there that Wednesday evening and the noise level was very high. We could have put up with all this if we had had attentive service. We were wondering if this was due to the fact we were four women! I finally got up and spoke to the manager. The manager said that our waiter was new and went and spoke with him. The waiter then became more attentive. Prior to the manager speaking to our waiter, we did not see him in the room much. People who came in to eat way after us were there were served their drinks, served their food, and left while we were still waiting for our food! We were all very disappointed ... especially since this was a special birthday dinner and the birthday girl had requested eating at the Iron Gate.
Four of us were there to celebrate one birthday and one moving away. I had food issues that were addressed smoothly. Service was delightful. Food was tasty. Champagne cocktails were good. Souffle desserts were lovely. Also, the place has a large visible sign on El Camino, so I found it with no trouble. Meal was a little pricey, but we ate well.
I HAVE BEEN GOING TO THE IRON GATE FOR 20 YEARS, IT IS ALWAYS THE SAME DELICIOUS FOOD, GREAT SERVICE. THE SCALONE, MIX OF CALAMARI AND SCALLOPS POUNDED TOGETHER ALMOST TASTE LIKE ABALONE, AND IT IS HALF THE PRICE. THE SOUFFLES ARE THE BEST. THE WAITERS ARE PROFESSIONALS, HAVE BEEN WORKING THERE FOR A VERY LONG TIME. IT IS A VERY WARM ATMOSPHERE.
Excellent dining experience and service. Highly recommended. Prices are high but quality and service are in line with the price.
Good, traditional, old style, continental cuisine, served by seasoned waiters. Great for special occasions, as several dishes are prepared table-side a la flambe. Souffle dessert is also special and amazing.
The Iron Gate is wonderful. it was our first time and it more than met it's great reputation on the Peninsula. we used to love Chantilly in Redwood City for an elegant evening(sadly closed); Iron Gate easily takes it's place. The food is great (classic french plus), the ambiance and decor lovely, the service is outstanding. it's expensive, but definitely worth it. we're hooked!
Very good, but rather expensive.
Tables too close together.
Can hear conversations from other diners.
Not enough room for table-side service to be table-side at all all tables.
Always consistently great food, friendly wait staff, and a genuinely great place for a special meal.
I give 3 stars this time(we were there few times prior) because we did not like the way Hostess treated us when we "checked in". It was a Valentine weekend and she was NOT pleasant, kept talking on the phone and had no happy personality at all. :(
My husband and I went to Iron Gate on a belated Valentine's Day celebration and had a great evening. We really enjoyed the food and the service was fantastic, but were surprised by the pricing of the menu items - we are the type to do our research before making reservations for restaurants, and it seemed that prices had gone up at least 20% from the prices we saw online. Otherwise, a great experience overall!
Delayed valentine day dinner with my husband. The food was great, as we expected. But the service was much less than we experienced in the past. We had to ask for menus to be provided, asked 3 times for a water refill before we got it, and our glasses were filled with wine only once, we took care of the rest. The nice sorbet palate cleansers after the salad course were forgotten by our waiter. We love this restaurant and have come to expect a certain level of service, but it seemed that the standards have been lowered since our last visit. For a meal that cost over $200, the service was not adequate.
It was a lovely experience and great value for a romantic dinner. The server explained us the specials and his service was high rated.
Outstanding food and service. This is our go to spot for fine dining and special occasions. Expensive but worth every penny.
The Iron Gate always delivers. The food is fantastic, the service is excellent.
Valentine’s Day lunch with my wife. Food was delicious, as always, and our favorite waiter Guiseppe was exceptional.
We love the Iron Gate for special occasion dinners when you want a truly fine dining experience and are willing to pay for it.
Another excellent special occasion meal at the Iron Gate. Try the spinach flambe salad and the strawberry flambe dessert-outstanding.
Old-school dining with a classic menu. The food was delicious and each course can be paired with a specific wine. The wait staff was very experienced and knowledgable about the menu. It was somewhat noisier than usual due to Valentine's Day celebrations. A delightful evening out!
Always a great experience in food and service! The most recent was a Birthday Dinner for my significant other with a couple who own an upscale restaurant in San Francisco who multiple times would not let us pay for our meal. We wanted to take them to a special place to reciprocate and they loved the Iron Gate!
San Mateo, CA
We enjoy the restaurant for atmosphere quality of food and especially attentive
Corkage is steep at 30.00. Food amazing but expensive.
This is my favorite restaurant. The food is delicious and the service is excellent.
The food and service was absolutely fantastic! We had always heard good reviews about The Iron Gate, but just recently had the opportunity to experience eating there. The staff is extremely attentive! The owner actually visited our table, thanking us for dining at the restaurant and asking if everything was okay. The food was delicious and the presentation was very nice. We will definitely be back!
We have been going to the Iron Gate for over 35 years and still enjoy the food, the bartenders and the waiters. Very good veal dishes and salads. The sorbet to cleanse the palate is a nice touch. Enjoyed watching a lot of people in the dining room celebrating birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions. Lots of singing & flambe entrees for all to witness. Lots of happy people.
Magdy our waiter is by far the best in the business. He knows what to do and when. The food and wine suggestions are on point every time
Transformed a casual birthday celebration into a superb one, with a delightful chocolate surprise !
The Caesar salad for two was good. My entree (Steak Au Poivre Flambe ) was tough and the pepper sauce over it was insipid. My partner's entree (Poulet a la Marsala) was "just ok". The desert (fresh berries in ice cream) was good. The service was very good and attentive.
This is a classic old time Italian - French restaurant if you're looking for well dressed waiters with a support staff that is outstanding, this place is for you. Our waiter was part of a 3 person team, attentive but not hovering. They certainly knew what they were doing and we'll well coordinated.
This is a old fashioned French Italian restaurant. If if you're looking for old fashioned and elegance. This is a must go to place.
Our waiter engaged with us knew the menu and specials. He even got special wine glasses for us.
We had an excellent abalone appetizer that wasn't overpowered by allowing sauces. Thus the subtle flavor of the abalone was spot on. Our house salad for 2 was tossed at the table with mixed greens, bay shrimp, avocado, and a perfect lite dressing, that again was not overpowering.
My wife had the provimi veal special with artichoke hearts and marsala wine. I had the Petrali sole special almondine, both excellent!
It was a wonderful evening. I always feel great when the Mrs. Is very happy with a perfect evening !
Excellent service and food. Still a great classic style restaurant and our go to place for celebrations.
I have already posted a review on trip advisor.
It was my son 21 st Birthday and this Iron made a true memory. From the stupendous amazing fabulous waiter to the cocktails and of course the exquisite food.
Thank you Thank you Thank you for making my son and ours a great evening of fun and great dining!!!!!
Joe made our dinner truly enjoyable! It's rare anymore to get a true professional waiter and Joe is exactly that! Thanks Joe!
Ok at best. The service was great, really nice folks work there, hostess is hot, food not worth the money. Just to give you an example, $30 salad for two, it was nothing more than spinach and bacon. $55 steak Diane, while tasty, it was a $10 Safeway steak - should have been $30 max. Can't make an old fashion either.
On the plus side, the whole flambe thing they do is pretty cool. But it feels like they up charge for the experience.
Great as always! The service is highly professional and the food is superb. This is our favorite restaurant in the Bay Area.
