Iron Gate Ratings and Reviews
Iron Gate is a classic Italian Restaurant. Everything about our dining experience was memorable. The waiters were attentive but respectful of our privacy. The Beef Wellington and rack of lamb were prepared perfectly. The 2 hour dining experience was most enjoyable.
The Iron Gate is a terrific and unique restaurant. The servers have been there many years and do a great and professional job. This restaurant is unique with all the table side preparations and flambé. And the food is delicious, fresh, and bacon spinach salad prepared with a flambé is wonderful. But so are the scallops and shrimp appetizers. We loved the petroleum sole, maybe the best I eve head. And the veal piccata is prepared table side with a flambé. But don’t miss out on the osuflets with blueberries or strawberries. That’s something special. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the Bay Area, and that includes SF. the restaurant is a treasure, a little bit of a throw back to when restaurants did something special for their treasured guests.
Iron Gate is a real old school go to spot! I have been coming here for over 30 years (definitely a special occasion spot!) and it is so nice to relive the "continental" style of dining from the 70-80's. Steak Diane and Veal Oscar were a hit as well as the Iron Gate salad, and the souffles are to die for.
For anyone who wants to experience something special they definitely need to come to Iron Gate.
I have been going to the Iron Gate for the past 20+ years for business, dinner with friends, and have hosted large celebrations for business and family. Regardless of the number of guests, the service has always been impeccable and the food is consistently outstanding. I love the Caesar salad, Steak Au Poivre, and Grand Marnier Soufflé, but I have tried various dishes throughout the years and all have been equally as delicious. This is definitely a neighborhood gem.
We love Iron Gate. The old school go to place for a special occasion or just because you'd like a lovely dinner. Several table service dishes like caesar salad, steak diane & crepes. There is nothing like a flaming dish made right in front of you and the kids love it!!
Went for Thanksgiving Dinner. Table for 4 at 5pm. Menu was limited as it was a holiday. Great selection. We had to repeatedly ask for water refills....when dessert was offered the waiter did not offer us coffee. Which was included in the price of the meal. Our steak dinners were $83.00, I did not feel the service was up to par for the cost of the meals.
We won't be returning next Thanksgiving.
Went for Thanksgiving dinner. We were seated earlier than our reservations. Very complete wine list. I ordered a Steirlin Cabernet which was very good. First served as an appetizer was a tortellini, followed by a seafood bisque which was phenomenal. The main course was veal Oscar which was cooked to perfection. Service was great. My only minor complaint is that the room was a bit stuffy for me. I realize it's an older building and good ventilation is rare in those.
It was an unwelcome surprise to discover that the receptionist could not locate my reservation on the computer. As I had loaned my iPhone to an associate I was meeting with after lunch, I could not produce the confirmation number as shown on my phone. Fortunately, as we were slightly after the lunch rush. she was able to seat us. But I must confess this eroded somewhat my confidence in Open Table's system. (However, this has never happened to me before.)
This was a mixed experience, especially compared with previous visits. The food was mostly good, not so the service.
1) Took super long to get our waiter at any chance
2) My wife's steak was overcooked and the waiter laughed it off when we told him
3) We had to make do with a single serving of water, we never got a refill.
Excellent as always.
We always ask ourselves after eating at the Iron Gate why it has been so long since the last time and the only answer is there are so many great choices on the peninsula. The food is always dependably terrific and never disappoints. The wait staff are in some ways from a bygone era. The service is impeccable.
If there is any fault to be found it is that the dining room itself does not allow for any real ambiance and without losing seating it never will. That aside it is a wonderful place for a business dinner, romantic outing or special occasion
My husband and I were celebrating our 55th wedding anniversary, and the wait staff made it a pleasant evening by being attentive. We both ordered from the special meals that were offered for that evening. We were careless and didn't ask about the price and were shocked at the price of my husband's steak and lobster dinner. However, he said it was delicious, so it was worth the price. Perhaps, when a meal cost $74, the waiter might relay this information in a polite way.
