About

A native of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Chef Chittum has earned a reputation not only for his cooking, but also for his commitment to sourcing from an ever-expanding network of local farmers, watermen, and food artisans. Chittum and his team are revitalizing the Iron Gate with a menu that takes inspiration from the cuisines of Greece, Sicily, Sardinia, and Southern Italy, interpreting those traditions and techniques through the use of the finest products of the Mid-Atlantic foodshed. The original carriageway houses the bar and a year-round dining space, while the courtyard, overhung with grapevines and a century-old wisteria, features a protective awning allowing for (nearly) all-weather outdoor dining.

In our carriageway and garden, guests are invited to order from our a la carte menu featuring Chef Chittum's housemade, fresh pastas, wood-roasted meats and seafood, and more. Our patio is open year-round, weather-permitting.

Terrific beer selection and unique cocktails. Nice, homey fireplace perfect for a winter date night. Interesting preparations and delicious dishes that just got better in succession. Great for sharing and trying multiple dishes. The homemade pastas were must-haves as well as the farro salad and the octopus prepared two ways.

We were seated outside, in the patio when it was 37 degrees. It was windy and uncomfortable. The heaters were not positioned in a way that adequately warmed our table. And there were tables available inside.

I thought the food here was delicious and a lot less pricey than I had expected. Our waiter let us know they changed the menu to give more flexibility to guests, so it's no longer just a tasting menu, and now there are a la carte options. Everything we ordered was very tasty and fresh, particularly the bread (delicious homemade sourdough).

I will say that we surprised when we were seated outside, which is where the majority of tables were, in the middle of winter. Though there were heaters and we were given blankets, we were both freezing cold as we ate our meal. I would recommend this restaurant for sure, but I would strongly recommend going when the weather is warmer.

A romantic place for dining. It was a little cold outside today but I am sure I will come again when the weather gets warmer. Also the "Crisp Greek Yeast Doughnuts" were really delicious!!

We dined at Iron Gate January 28th. It was a little chilly so they let us sit inside, although the outside area was pretty full, so it must have been ok. The food was very nice-- small plates that were well prepared. The oysters were delicious; so was the farro, the beets, the pasta, and the foccacia was wonderful! Be sure to order it. Cocktails and wine were good, too. It was our anniversary and they gave us some champagne; the service was flawless.

The ambience is amazing at this restaurant! Staff was wonderfully attentive and friendly and even offered us a blanket and seat next to the fireplace outside to keep warm. Extensive cocktail and wine list -- so great if you plan on celebrating a special event! The waiter didn't explain the menu at first, since we had never dined with Iron Gate before, but after asking some questions, we quickly understood how it worked. Truly excellent menu with a wide variety of Mediterranean dishes. Dishes were well sized, recommended to have 2-3 dishes per adult.

Even though the weather was chilly, it was totally worth it to sit in the patio. The fires were blazing and they gave us blankets. Not only was the atmosphere special - you feel like you're in Europe - but the food was delicious. The smoked cod bruschetta and mushroom small dishes were standouts!

Manager had no willingness to make our evening worth the cost - lots of promises (heating lamps, blankets) no follow through. Waiter made up for her lack of interest.
Seafood stew was tasty but big enough to justify $60.
Ambiance great but really too cold for winter tables.

The patio is beautiful, and while it was a bit chilly the fires and blankets created a cozy romantic feel. Our food was very good, the only bit of a downer was the octopus. The cocktails were interesting and tasty. We were only in DC for a night and this was a great experience.

Got to the restaurant and found that we were going to be seated outside...in December. Ended up sitting in the bar (at least it was inside). Since this was a special occasion I was not happy. Apparently they reserve the lovely dining room for their tasting menu customers. Be aware.

Eating in a fairyland on the patio with vines and lights above. Bring layers. Temperature depends on how close to heaters and fire pits your table is. Wonderful service. Made the gnocci with a special off menu sauce for a vegetarian member of our party. There were plenty of other vegetarian dishes but she was yearning for gnocci. Of the 9 small plates we shared 5-6 were fantastic and the others were really good. Don't miss the hen-of the woods mushroom dish and the gnocci.

Iron Gate is tucked away in an alley off of Dupont Circle. At night it's kind of mysterious and romantic -- and easy to miss. So much the better. You can eat inside, but I'd recommend eating in the patio. Even in December the firepits keep it warm.

It was my birthday, so they brought us a glass of aged Greek malvasia and orange-blossom doughnuts and all kinds of other stuff, all on the house. The wine list is extensive, mostly Greek and Southern Italian, the cocktails are creative and damn good, and while we only had small plates each one was better than the next -- the charred octopus was unforgettable, make sure you get it.

Our waiter was a young guy with blond hair and a big jaw. I don't remember his name, but if your server matches that description you can rest easy, you're in good hands.

Can't recommend Iron Gate enough.

Ordered the special small plate w/ truffle and it was $55, the waiter didn't tell us (avg small plate cost on the menu was 10-15$) also the waiter let us order two scoops of ice cream even though the ice cream scoops are enormous. Also the ice cream is bad. Otherwise the food was great. The meatballs were nothing to write home about but the duck pasta and the VERY expensive truffle risotto was amazing.

Never crossed my mind that we would be seated al fresco in 42 degree weather or that there were two different listings for this restaurants indoor and outdoor space. Food was delicious but had I known that I was going to be seated outside ( heaters and fire pits not withstanding) I would have dressed rather differently and spent more of my time focused on the food rather than then temperature. On the top patently they had blankets on offer but no one bothered to share that information as we froze on metal seats! We finally asked and someone brought a blanket. Final straw was the collapsing table that wasn't unique to us and rehired regular supervision from our waiter to prevent the complete loss of the entire table contents on the ground. A $1 shim would go a long way on the uneven patio. Unless the temperature is above 65 I would give this a pass. All of the above made it rather hard to focus on the food. So cold at the end we didn't bother with dessert or coffee. Oie. Ruined special occasion.

The patio dining area is insufficiently heated and the staff does not seem to be very concerned about the comfort of diners who are obviously distressed by the cold. Comments and looks exchanged with other diners in the room made it clear that few were enjoying themselves. The outside temperature the night we dined was in the 40's. Dress warmly with sweaters and plan to wear your coats throughout the meal if you are seated in this area. Better yet, don't book here if temperatures are low. The food is good, but the discomfort is such that it is hard to enjoy it.

While being definitely different from the normal fare offered in the area, the food was fantastic. The service was excellent. Dining is on a patio with fire pits and standing heaters, allowing most tables to be very comfortable while dining. Not only did I enjoy my meal after work while traveling from another state, I promptly brought a friend the following night. As a result of that meal, she made a reservation for a night the next week. Excellent place!

Disappointing. First time back to the Iron Gate under current ownership. The menu was scant--no fish. It was too noisy, even in a quiet area. The waitress was cloying. Food was OK but way too pricey. I am not coming back.

I was really looking forward to this meal! But it was really awful - the food all came very, very quickly, and was not fresh at all. The squash we ordered was actually cold. I was embarrassed because I had recommended that a friend from out of town try the restaurant because I'd heard such good things, and everything was so terrible that neither of us could really comment on it.

The only saving grace was the bar. There was a nice wine list and the bartenders seemed on point. But yes, the food was prepared terribly. I felt like someone had reheated last night's dinner, and not particularly competently...

It wasn't clear that the menu was only small bites, and the server didn't give us much direction on which plates were the most popular. The food was good (not amazing) and the service was okay. It's very dark on the patio and the music was playing way too loud (I had to shout to have a conversation at one point).

This is not the inside restaurant at the Iron Gate. It is very romantic, and charming, but the menu is limited (lots of small plates , only a couple with meat) and four entrees all of which were pretty price ($11 for an extra meatball). Everything would have been better with better service, though. We ordered the three spread small plate - crackers and thee dips, in essence. That only took about 20 minutes to arrive. Service throughout the meal was about the same. Food quality was good and the ambiance was outstanding, but a limited menu and forgetful service diminished the meal.

An average night out until....

My wife and I are pretty fair diners, we never discount a new place if the 1st trip is a fail. Everyone has an off night and deserves another shot down the line. We do however have one hard and fast rule we live by.....if you don't make it home before the meal is "coming back" up....YOU'RE OUT!

Our evening @ IRON GATE was not this scenario, but now we have a SECOND rule for dining out.....if the server skims you credit card and goes on a shopping spree....YOU'RE OUT!

I won't bore OPEN TABLE diners with the details....but it was done here, trust me. Of course we're not out a dime thanks to a vigilant CC company, but if they got us....they've gotten others.

And yes I called the restaurant and notified the Mgr. on duty, who was seemingly appalled. Was promised a call back from the GM....that was 3 days ago....still waiting. Oh well...

BTW..the food was pretty good and the location is Romantic......buyer beware......

The food was good, drinks great and the ambience was very nice on the patio but the menu is limited to 7-8 appetizers and 3 main dishes. The tasting menu is not available on the patio. I left feeling hungry even though we spent about $55/person and had 1 drink each. I would go back for drinks appetizer but not for dinner.

Sat inside for the tasting menu. Service was impeccable and staff very attentive. Outside is much more casual and a la carte menu. Also much more reasonably priced. Tasting menu good for special occasion but a little pricey for every day driving.

We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner experience on the back patio of Iron Gate. Charming, romantic, full of life, the atmosphere was perfect for a relaxing, romantic evening. Ordering from the mezze menu (as opposed to the Italian, family-style menu), we enjoyed creative combinations that delivered subtle, rich flavor. The wine list is extensive, featuring Italian wines. If you're a chocolate lover, try the Trifle for dessert. This will be a pricier dinner out, but it's well worth it!
